I picked up the JD SB BP rye today bottled on 8-16-23(127.8 proof). This bottle is awesome. The nose is vanilla extract with bananas. The palet was even better with the same notes. Truly amazing rye for $65.00
Thanks for the review Jason. Sorry your experience wasn’t as good as mine on your particular bottles. I bought and tasted a JDSBBP rye today. Bottled on 10.5.2023 and ABV 131.2. I have to say that it was amazing! Sweet currants and brown sugar on the nose and the same right up front before the hug. Dark, super rich and I was quite happy with particular pour.
Found a 137.3 yesterday in Georgia (can't find it in Chattanooga) for $79.99. I picked it up, and it's so good! It definitely has heat kick, but the concentrated flavors (this one has a marshmellow cherry oak bomb with just a hint of banana) are better than most bottles over $100.
I got barrel # 23-03151 136.9 proof, had a similar taste experience with the bitter finish, but with a few drops of water that mellowed out and that banana foster flavor came forward. Purchased in UT at MSRP
Just picked up one at 138. 6 proof. Cinnamon banana nut bread on the nose and palate with an earthy clove note. Very hot even after being in the glass for a while. But extremely tasty.
I was able to get the 140.7 proof version of it which I like a lot. Lots of intense flavors and yes the proof is there but I really like it. I think all in all this is a solid bottle.😊
Nice review, Jason. I just picked up the JD single barrel, barrel proof bourbon today and sipping it now. I really dig this. I haven't purchased much JD products in the past but I would definitely try the rye version at 60. Cheers!
Really hoping they do private store picks of these Sib ryes. As I feel the same way about off-the-shelf JDSBBP whiskey, the quality is hit or miss on those, but if you go with store picks, automatically the quality goes up significantly and you hardly get a mediocre one. At least in my neck of the woods. Great review Jason!
I happened to get one from original release for $70 a couple years ago. It was very good. I have been waiting to find one again. It might take awhile for it to make it to Iowa. Thanks for the insight.
Ok, I just purchased my 2nd bottle of JD Single Barrel Barrel Proof. I haven’t had the Rye version yet. The first one was absolutely outstanding. So when I came across this 2nd one I had to have it. Haven’t opened it yet but I’m anticipating it to be as delicious as the first one. They’re hard to find in my area and both of the ones I’ve found are in another state altogether. Watching out for the Rye version. 😊👍
Just got mine, also bottled in Feb 24 at 129.4. Awesome. Citrus, sweet, brown sugar, nice spice. Doesn’t drink like a 129. My first rye this year, may be in my top 5 whiskeys. Might like it better than Jack 10?
I've had the same experience with regular JDSBBP. Some great, some hot and bitter. I used a couple such bottles of a Chris Fletcher pick in 375s to fill an ex-Weller Ten-30 barrel in the hopes that some extra maturation will turn it around haha.
Hi Jason! I have a bottle of this. I haven’t gotten around to opening it yet. I was hoping this was great, but it’s been mixed results. We’ll see how mine is. Thanks for the excellent review. I overpaid a little ($100), but only once. I guess I was hoping for a 2020 LE level rye. Oh well. It was a gamble.
Based on the reviews I'm seeing, It seems like it's either FANTASTIC or good but middle. I wonder if it'll dial in like the Tennessee whiskey SBBP bottles where they all seem to be consistently really good to great / awesome. I'm not a rye fan, but I missed the special release so I'm excited to get a chance to have one!
Not the biggest JD fan, but usually when they hit a home run, they knock it out of the park. My bottle was 137.9 proof. Amazing taste, bold flavors, and it drank significantly under it's proof point. To your point - luck of the barrel.
I'd also be curious down the line if Jack Daniels fine tunes some of the rough edges on the BP ryes as I think they have successfully done that with the BP bourbons.
I finally found it. I paid 69.99 for 1 and 67.99 at another place. I opened the lower price, also lower proof at 131.5 proof, and it's a hitter. I'll wait till this one is down some before I open the other to compare. That one is 133.5 proof. I hope it's as good as my first bottle.
I noticed that near the beginning of this video, you asked the question in text if your opinion of Canadian whisky has changed. Nope, it hasn't. Most of it is watered down, but every now and again, there are good ones. My go to is Lot 40 Dark Oak. It's available in a few States in the USA. My question, though, is if you had your choice of Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Pick or Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Rye which would you choose? I've had neither so I am looking forward to your opinion
Well the regular SB rye is way more tamed down than this. So if you like lower proof go with that. However certain barrels or picks of these I'm sure will be pretty fantastic. But as I mentioned it will be a crapshoot unless you know someone that's good at picking barrels.
Hey Jason, I added a couple drops of water to my Heroes Selection SiB BP "bourbon", which I love neat, and did not like it. It tasted like char. Being that said, have you tried adding water to the Rye since you said it drinks hot?
Grabbed a bottle today after shipments made it into the Atlanta market. After hitting two stores found a bottle @137 proof for $65. Looking to cracking open. Juice looks like coffee.
Jack Daniels single barrels, both the Tennessee whiskey and the Rye, vary SIGNIFICANTLY from barrel to barrel. The total wine (Rye) pick I have is....meh? I got a 137 proof one today and it is so freaking sweet, so freaking good. Buying one of these is really a gamble.
Almost a year later and I'm still hardly seeing these in our area. When I do see it they're asking $150+. I was able to get one for $79. If I go one state over I can find it for $73, but I have to get it delivered to a co-worker's house, otherwise it'll be gone.
I really liked my single barrel rye at 135.7 proof. I compared it to my Corbin Cash 1917 at 123 oroof rye. The Corbin Cash beat it pretty easily in my opinion.
Jason, excellent review. I am appropriately cautioned and feel like I have this one in proper perspective. The orange-banana tasty part of the experience would be great. That said, 136 proof is damned hot, and if it drinks hot to a pro like you, that stuff would beat me up like a red-headed stepchild. I'm also sensitive to a bitter back palate. And maybe I would get lucky and find a bottle from a sweeter barrel, like your press sample. But then luck has not been a constant companion for me. Therefore, even though I am the consummate rye guy, I will stay lower on the proof levels. You're the best, bro.
The single barrel regular definitely varies from bottle to bottle. I had one that was next level flavor and then tried another a few weeks later from different store and it was horrible. Those were only around $65. If I paid over $150 I’d be really pissed off.
Hey Jason! What is the barrel number on yours ? I picked up 2 bottles yesterday, (one for a friend) and the proof is the same at 166.3. I'm also in Ohio and wondering if mine are from the same barrel.
side note, the store I got it from had 4 cases of Weller Green label and a full case of Buffalo Trace sitting on the floor just as you walk in......the day after they got their truck ! Still limit 1 each.
I toured the JD distillery a few weeks ago and one of the bottles I bought was this rye. I'm glad you weren't a huge fan either actually becuase I've had it a couple of times now and it's not my fav. Hot and bitter. Don't mind the heat but the combo just isn't enjoyable to me.
Hey Jason! After watching your review, I was compelled to pour a dram and give my thoughts. Tonight is my second pour from this bottle (Barrel No. 23-08170/ Bottled 3-8-23/66.70% 133.4 proof) and I must say that it’s more enjoyable than the first pour a couple of weeks ago. Tonight, I get sweet and rye spice one the nose and a good BP singe 😂. The palate hits up front with that sweet/classic banana notes sliding into the spice and heat from the proof. This finish is nice and slow with surprisingly sweet notes again. I don’t pick up any bitterness as you described (understood yours is a different barrel). Then again, my palate may not be as seasoned/experienced as yours 👍🏼 All in all, I found this second visit a pleasurable one. Hopefully if you go back to yours, it will change for you. Thanks for your time on this channel and on patreon. Cheers 🥃
I feel like the TTB should mandate that all single barrel products should have their age stated. No reason to not have the age stated on a single barrel
@@eddyburg101 it's very good. But this barrel I had initially was not great. Most barrels I've had since have been incredible. I did 2 picks of this one. Cheers

Great review Jason. I'm glad you were able to review 2 different single barrels and break down the differences.

Jason! Always love when im looking into a whiskey and I see that you've reviewed it - best one out here doin it!
Thanks man. Appreciate it
Picked up one at 140.9 proof and I'm enjoying it very much. My bottle is very candy forward similar to green apple jolly rancher.
Nice breakdown. Enjoyed the side by side with the media sample.. thanks keep up the great content

Thank u as always for honest reviews. I tried a hazmat of this and really enjoyed it but no where near as much as the LE
I got a 139.6 proof. Jesus christ. Set my face on fire.

Same here, had an awful bitter Chris Fletcher pick in a 375 not too long ago.
thanks for honest review. cheers.
I grabbed one the other night and it’s a hot burner, wow! A little bitter but I will go back to it in about a week and see if it changes!
Jack has definitely been killing it lately. I'm a huge Jack fan outside of the normal Jack offerings.
same here man
Likewise.
My bottle along with a bottle of anejo finished will be coming home from the distillery tomorrow
Great review! Can't wait to get my hands on one of these bottles! I'll probably have to wait a while before I can find one for msrp.
Awesome video great information. Thanks, Jason.
Thanks Big J! At that price I am in! I really like the SBBP and the 10 n 12! JD is serious about getting to the people who grew out of Old No 7.
I'm now just starting to see Jack Daniels SB Barrel Proof more in Colorado yet to see the Rye 🥃
I just got one that was bottled on 2/24/24 @130.5 I got for $74. It's the best whiskey this year.
Jason, great review and H2H2H to give some range on the SiBs. I'll keep enjoying those 2020 Special Release beauties!!
I'm a huge fan of the JD Single barrel select, Rye
Mine is all brown sugar and chocolate, love it.
I think its starting to go chocolate. Hoping it gets there.
you tested a rye, what about the select?
Just grabbed one at MSRP, fingers crossed!

I think so
Did you delete the first review?
When did you start wearing my hat?? LOL
$47 for 139 proof, damn, hope it comes in stock again here...
When the JDBP first came out, It was so good, I bought four bottles. I recently bought a new release and it's like a different whiskey. Disappointed 😢
Since you don't like it, send it to me please!!!

Are us Ohio guys biased by our controlled pricing? I can't imagine finding this for $60 outside Ohio.
Im in Maryland. Found this for 65 at Total Wine.
And now all the Taters that paid hundreds and bunkered the 2020 limited release hoping to make a bunch of $$$$ are screwed. waawaaawaaaaaaa......
