- A collection of clips taken during the tsunami that hit Santa Cruz as a result of the 9.0 earthquake in Japan. It's not the kind of dramatic videos we saw in Japan, but it did cause almost $30 million in damage. It sank nine boats, and wiped out over 50 slips, including one entire dock. Anytime water withdraws from the ocean floor even in Harbors, always seek higher ground. Because, no one knows for sure how high a tsunami is going to be until it's too late to act.
Or just run to the beach to record lol most people did in my town when they was a warning
Happened to me in Mexico… camping on a beach and 6.5 quake struck. Water in small bay receded about 1/2 mile… the sea bottom was totally visible. We all moved to higher ground but the tsunami was relative minor hitting the shore after filling the bay.
Tidal wave is coming? Lets take our kids right to the shoreline.

I've been watching a lot of the videos from the 2011 Japan tsunami, and now I've come across this. This is absolutely nothing!
I've seen a few of these Santa Cruz tsunami videos before where the surge and the waves were filmed but you did a great job actually providing information on the extension of the damage caused by the tsunami. I find tsunamis to be very fascinating but it's of course very sad for everyone affected by them, both in Japan and for other countries that were hit, even if they were hit by much smaller waves. I hope Santa Cruz is up and running as normal again now, it seems to be a beautiful harbor.
I was asleep in my townhome about a mile from there when the tsunami hit the Santa Cruz Harbor. A concerned friend called and woke me up, scared that my wife and I had been impacted. Turned out nothing really happened in my area, though we were close to the beach at Moran Lake County Park. That was a wild morning. Horrible what happened to the harbor that morning.
How did this get dragged out for almost 17 minutes.

I was standing on the cliff just down from Rio Del Mar on this day. I could see the keel of the cement boat. I was at the exact spot that it was anticipated a wave would hit if it did. No one knew what would happen. All the houses on the beach were evacuated. There was one lone guy going from house to house to check that everyone was out. The KGO helicopter hovered above us. Thank my lucky stars to this day we were spared. Suddenly the chopper took off headed for the harbor -

You know what blows my mind? That this tsunami came all the way across the pacific in less that 24 hours… creating your tsunami on the same day.
hi Coolboy81, thanks for your nice comment. I don't think the Harbor is fully back to normal yet, but a lot of work has been done. The dock that disappeared has been replaced. On another note - two copies of your message were flagged as spam? I wonder how that happened... Diane

I find myself wondering just how many of these sailboats actually ever go out sailing, as opposed to being tied up at the dock.
I've heard it said that the larger the sailboat the less it gets sailed, simply because ot the work and time involved.

When the harbor dries up head for high ground next time tsunami can get vary ugly

I've seen tidal bore with worse effects and it was a daily event.
I admit a bore in Santa Cruz seems worse. So, stop listening.
@dianere2005 Good to hear that docks that were damage have since been replaced and rebuilding work being done, hope everything will be fully back to normal soon. Sometimes my RUclips acts up and doesn't actually show me if a message/comment is posted and makes me have to try again, sometimes over and over until it shows up so that's probably what happened to my comment here. Sorry for the confusion.
Your at the ocean and the water leaves you should have left too especially if you have kids with you

Tsunami..? Where? The harbor ran dry and then filled up again, that's all. People worrying about their luxury rowing boats when on the other side of the world over 10000 people are dying, whole cities are flooded and 3 reactors of a nuclear power plant melt down.
I understand it's a bummer when your boat takes damage but to put a title up like this when the disaster is happening on the other side is either clickbait or just plainly disrespectful and heartless.
Some of those "luxury boats" will be the basis of a small business. And this actually is a video of a Tsunami, just because it's not a giant one (or that the person filming thought it appropriate to bring children down to see it) doesn't change that.

ومن شدته انه اذا مر على نهر شقه نصفين ورفع قاعه الطيني وذر ترابه في الهواء

ويحمل معه الحيوان والانسان الى عنان السماء ثم يلفظه خارج الغلاف الجوي او الكرة الارضية وكانها عملية تفريغ اي شفط نحو الفضاء الخارجي
مما يتسبب بخسائر مادية جسيمة وهائلة تقدر بتريليونات الدولارات
وهذا غيظ من فيض وهذا بعض ما يجري في امريكا
ان الذين كذبوا باياتنا واستكبروا عنها لا تفتح لهم ابواب السماء ولا يدخلون الجنة حتى يلج الجمل في سم الخياط ...
