i thought i would make this video since the common app recently opened up. i'm sure you guys are all stressed but hopefully this video along with my idea of humor lightens the load a bit:)
hope you guys enjoy these tips about what NOT to do in your supplemental essays!
first of all, thank you to all of you guys for watching my videos. it honestly means more than you guys realize :). i feel like i'm finally starting to show more of myself in these videos and its amazing that my channel's seeing some growth at the same time. i really want to take you guys along with me on this youtube "journey" i'm on right now so i thought i'd post my current subscriber count in these descriptions to let you guys see where my channel was at the time of upload and to keep me motivated!

tl;dr :)
1. spend a lot of time on the “why us” essay!!!!!! research, research, research
- don’t write about surface level details (like geographic conditions, sports teams, school colors, architecture, etc), or about things everyone already knows (like a famous street, building, etc)
- do talk about something that is specific to that school
2. try to show some of your personality
- don’t talk too much about academics
- do talk about the college community + how you’d fit in, clubs that might not be found at other schools, and research opportunities
3. don’t bring things up without context
- show that you’ve had a particular interest for a long time
- mention things you’ve done in the past, applicable clubs, etc.
- try to connect your ecs to each other and make your entire app flow, it makes you seem like a real person who has long term plans and interests
4. don’t be a walking brochure, the person reading your essays will 100% know more about the school than you.
- show what you have to offer to the school as opposed to what the school can offer you. you can talk about the school’s resources and opportunities but try to pivot back to how you can utilize them to give back to the school in the future
5. don’t try to talk about too much stuff, focus on a few topics and elaborate more. this makes it more memorable, personal, and genuine. 2 topics for ~200 word essays and 3-4 for ~500 word essays.
6. don’t be fake!!!!! don’t assume what the reader wants to hear or try to force a certain image of yourself. if you make yourself seem too perfect when it’s not honest your supps will come off poorly

Writing these essays is super stressful. I feel like I can’t achieve anywhere near the level of fluidity and cohesiveness that some kids have in their writing. This helps though, thanks :)

I'm nearing the point where I'm actually really happy with my supplementals. My Yale application is due in 11 days (yikes) but I feel like all 7 of my essays are really me. Thanks, and wish me luck!

On the struggle bus over here. Students who are pursuing a BFA in musical theatre literally *have* to apply to 20 schools (especially females). You aren’t just applying for the university; you also have to audition and get into the musical theatre department. Basically...less than 1% of applicants get an offer for most schools. My daughter is applying to 20 schools and the essays are a beast. Especially because the MT student essays are surely filled with tons of cliches and repetition for the admissions people who are reading them.
This helps me so much! I was kinda worried that this would be another one of those "don't be surface-level, etc., etc." videos and articles that you see whenever you look this stuff up, but it really wasn't. The tips you gave were really fleshed out and are absolutely going to help me with my remaining apps

Your videos have been super super helpful, thank you so much!! I've kinda been struggling to find advice that isn't the generic "be creative" or "be specific", especially as a rising senior during corona where online resources are kinda all I got, but your tips have all really resonated with me and have actually helped me fix things in my essays/refine my college search process/etc, so thanks you :))

Please do more videos about Supplemental Essays. A lot of the time when I try writing mine it feels like I'm telling the college stuff they already know (abt academics or clubs). I'm also not sure how to make the supplemental essay more MINE; mine sounds like anyone could have written it. If the clubs, cultures, and diversity are what I'm really looking forward to should I speak about the college in a more specific or general way? Random ex: (blah blah blah uni) has a plethora of clubs that I will... Or with the 473 clubs on campus, I will..... But sometimes when I'm more specific it seems as if I'm copying and pasting the home pages of their website... so idk ;/

These tips are great! When you talked about really knowing a school, do you have any advice on how to do research to get non-surface-level info?
i would just find every single website that has to do with that school. i literally went through every single club penn had and every link on their website lol

Question: when do you start writing your essays and when did you get a good "final draft" done by?
for the common app i started writing late july / early august and i was revising it all the way up to a few days before i submitted it. for the supplemental essays, i started 2-4 weeks before the deadline but i definitely recommend you start earlier than that. hope this helps!

For the "why this school" essay, what if I'm interested in doing foreign exchange, traveling abroad pretty much? Should I stick with what will I do on campus in that college?
you can definitely mention it but personally, i wouldn't make it a big point since if you do a foreign exchange you would literally be attending a different school for that time period lol

so for the "don't be too academic" advice, would you recommend us write about solely academics in the 1st penn essay, then social life in the community essay since penn provides two essays for both?

Hey professor! As far as the “why here” question goes, would an essay about the energy and overall vibe I felt as I toured the school be too surface level, since whoever toured in person could do that?

would talking about the specific connections that the certain school brings to a certain metroplex in which i would like to work in be a good supplemental topic?
i personally would just focus on the school but i dont think it would be a problem if the connection youre talking about is specific to the school youre talking about and not to other ones in the area

hi i’m not sure if you’ve talked about this before in other videos but i’m stressed about what to do if i’m undecided or if my majors are a new found passion. i’m an officer for both stuco & my theatre troupe in high school but i want to major in psychology, sociology, education, or something to do with sustainability. things like that. but i feel like nothing i did in high school really connects together & im still unsure of a career choice that fits me best , so i’m confused on how to show colleges what i’m passionate about. pls help !!
you don't need to talk about ecs to show youre passionate about something! i think you can definitely pull personal experiences to explain why you want to major in something!
Would it be good to talk about how that school is very competitive compared to others in my state and that it will provide me with more rigor and better prepare me for the mcat and medical school
i wouldnt. why talk about how good your school is if you can talk about how great you are. also meat and mec school is too far down the line in my opinion and i don’t think you should focus on how well you would do if you go to said school. you should talk about how you would meaningfully contribute to the school
haley kang thank you! I’m still stuck on that part. It sounds kind of dumb but I just genuinely don’t know how to say what I could bring to the school and contribute. The only thing that really stand out about me is my connection to medicine and caring for my grandfather with Alzheimer’s. I don’t have anything else really and I don’t think any of that contributes to the school if that makes sense
@@elizabethkubler6731 I think you can express a desire to be around other motivated students, in a community that is engaged with the process, and how you can both contribute to it, and thrive in it based on your qualities. Don't put the school, or program, on a pedestal and come off as status seeking. You can incorporate the concepts you mention without sounding shallow. Good luck, you got this.

I’m planning to be a bio major but I wanted to write this essay about I topic I studied for fun as a child instead. do u think this would be a good idea or should I focus on my bio interests for this essay?
i love that. i think you should talk about the childhood topic! if you think you’re more passionate about that than bio i would totally go for it because i think what the app readers really care about seeing in the essay is you truly caring and being interested in a topic. long story short,i don’t think the readers are looking for you to talk about a specific topic

you totally can. i never said not to include anything academic related! i was just saying that i personally think its a good idea to also integrate non academic interests and “whys” into the essay!

diversity/inclusion is something i’m super passionate about, so that’s why i’m thinking of it
i think you can definitely include it but i wouldn't make it a main driving point in your essay since a lotttt of colleges say they prioritize diversity.
