Here's a fun thing a learned from a friend.
From their experience: Always walk backwards away from a brush, unless you're a REALLY short range weapon, this will pretty much make it impossible for them to hit you and you can easily shoot them back.
I do something similar with brushes while I'm Dynamo or any other mid line weapon that has poor strafing speed:
1. Like Gem, I use my attacks to paint areas they might try to approach me from. I start with their quickest route since this makes their movements more visible and predictable.
2. If I anticipate that the enemy is about to charge or throw a bomb, I start swimming away and then jump at full speed. This allows my swim momentum to carry me backward through the air as I'm readying an attack.
Remember: don't rush the brush!

Frankly the toughest thing about fighting brushes for me is dealing with vBrush spamming splat bombs and otherwise running away. With enough sub saver and some well-timed killer wails for tank refills, they can still pose a huge threat to slow weapons or slow reactors from range while avoiding most chances of themselves getting trapped.

When I'm playing brush and cannot safely get any engagements in, spamming bombs and getting special is the only way to prevent being a concrete block on the team.
I really don't prefer those matches, but with some weapon combos we don't have much of a choice. Also means you're not someone we can rush, so good on you for that :b

How to counter this: sacrifice yourself in favour for being a distraction point.
This has not let me down once (except if the other team is an impenetrable defence), and i have had multiple times where the team was able to make a push by the other team disregarding my existance and then my teammates jumping to me in THEIR base, or my team can make a small push with some of the enemies being distracted.
Distraction always works
Literally this, my team has made comebacks because I slipped past into the other team's side and just started doing circles or something
Note: From my experience, this tactic can work with any decently mobile short ranged weapon, not just brushes.

As an inkbrush player who already _struggles_ to have a decent game where we aren't screwed over by matchmaking and meta weapons, this video makes me extra sadge

EDIT: Here is my pro brush tip to counter Gem's strategy (only works for vanilla inkbrush), its okay if they box you out, build your ult, then pop the wail to _force_ an opportunity, forcing them to move, and then use that to break open their defense. I usually target the backline to occupy any Splatlings/Chargers (if there are any) or just give me an opportunity to get into favorable positions
I think a good counter to this specific counter-play would be a wise use of your secondary.
Basic inkbrush's splat bombs are a lifesaver due to their range and versatility, giving you the edge you need against short to mid range weapons. The special just compliments that, giving you a full tank refill and shooting the wails. The nouveau's only ranged option on the other hand is throwing the hammer. The only way you can counter the counter imo is to just go crazy with inkmines and pray you tag someone.
Octobrush doesn't have it quite as bad as inkbrush due to it's range, but smart use of suction bombs (on surfaces they wouldn't expect) will be your get-out-of-jail-free card. The octobrush nouveau is even better for traps than the ink nouveau in my opinion since you can see the enemy coming due to the beakon's detection radius. Inkstorm is just good in general, don't have anything specific to say about it.
Now the painbrush is one I personally struggle to work with, just because it's so new to me. Don't have any real advice on this set of brushes, just go crazy and hope for the best.
Also make sure you switch up how you approach your engagements! If your too predictable they'll catch on to your tricks and punish you. I've been playing Inkbrush as my favored weapon since splatoon 1 and had to learn these strats the hard way :,)
As an inkbrush, I keep underestimating the range of painbrushes and they usually get me in a 1v1 🤦
But I personally cannot adjust to their slower movement, so I'm not going to play that weapon myself :v
I’m spammy and charge headlong at times, so I usually fall into repetitive strategies Dx That’s my biggest downfall in a match. Thanks for the advice!
Also for some reason I love inkbrush because of its spam, dislike the octobrush because of its slower speed, yet love the painbrush because of its really slow speed (and POWEEER) but the delay after each swing gets me splatted if I keep panickedly spamming… not used to it yet. Any advice for thinking/mindset in a match?

From experience, brushes thrive on a team that paints well or consciously paints areas of the map. If you have to ink your own path it becomes hard to do what brushes like to do. I’ve had games where I as a brush had to act as paint support.
That's funny... they can run through enemy ink faster than rollers or dualies can.
Either thrive on a team that paints well and get many kills, or be a good support for a team that kills well but needs someone to paint and guard their path to retreat. At least in my experience

I was doing the 'Splat Bomb Rush' challenge and in one of my matches on Mahi-Mahi Resort (thankfully, one that I won, and my fifth win so I got the token and sweet relief), I just had the most traumatic five minutes of my life, playing Splat Zones. I was not having a fun time being a short-range shooter (ttek) and there were two Inkbrushes determined to ruin my day. I think I have a little trauma about trying to spot them coming from behind cover constantly.
I really appreciate this video. I think this will definitely help in the future, not chasing brushes in Turf War, and trying to stay between them and where they want to go, on objectives. The advice is very helpful, thank you for another really good set of tips, I appreciate it. :)

Its all good! They were objectively very good players, and using their weapon to its strengths, nothing wrong with that. It was a very close game all-in-all; the only one of the wins I got that was not a knockout victory, they played super well. :)
...I almost never play ranked so I'm a little out of my element sometimes seeing the big terrain changes to handle ranked modes, is all.

The problem I've mostly found is during the opening of Clam Blitz, where they make a clam ball and you kinda have to try to chase them back to your base so you dont just let them score for free (they still score becaue theyre faster than the midliners i play)
inkbrushes are always so infuriating during clam blitz because i know the only reason they work against me is a plain and simple skill issue.
Ink brush clam players are a combination of the most annoying, low skilled, but somehow effective players on the planet. All they have to do is run around with the clam ball and they create an obscene level of pressure just by existing near ur clam basket. Bc the second you see them you need to stop them, but all they have to do is run around and waste ur time
I used to do that with Inkbrush in 2 but now I only do that if my team is losing horribly in a match/last resort option

As an octobrush 1 trick i am rather glad you made this, because in x everyone does this already except for what seems to just be my teammates who let an inkbrush run a clam from across the map into our base while im killing the others in their base.

Paintbrush is still very good outside of high level ranked though, it’s range and damage are both very high, easy to splat people with it that aren’t able to exploit the wind up fast enough
Sacrifices had to be made to destroy Inkbrush. Blasters are fine because they’re so popular, and nobody plays bows anyways (for legal reasons this part is a joke), so we’re still at a net positive.

As someone that mains at least 1 weapon each class, I have to say...
Brushes, you guys are not suffering. This video is really nice for other weapons, sure, but there's more and more ways to play the game with the same weapon. If u felt like you're "in danger" then you're not playing this game with creativity enough.

This, honestly. I wouldn't call Painbrush Nouveau a main, but I use it fairly often and have a ton of fun being aggressive. If you know where all your enemies are, you don't need to wait for them to chase you. Since you have no damaging sub, you can't bait-and-switch them or bomb spam. Missiles mean you can help keep pressure off the objective, and you have an opportunity to get some picks when they scatter since the reticles stick around until impact. Not all brushes need to play the same.
Maybe this is just cause I'm trash but in low X rank where I am I notice brushes like to just grab a power clam and bum rush the basket and it'll work about a couple times per game because they're hard enough to hit that they can slip by.
Against other weapons I would counter this by painting in front of them but brushes don't care about that. They just skirt around any bombs I throw. And while I can just shoot them and that sometimes works they only need to get past me once or twice per game to get clams in.
As a brush main this video is tooooooo funny and it makes me happy in a while that I am that much of a threat hahaha. We are basically the knifing class/melee class in a FPS. People can't stand it but it takes tremendous skill to do it because shooters got so much an advantage and the maps are catered too that so changing the game with the brush is all so much sweeter but man to make a video about how to stop it its just funny to me no disrespect.

See, as a brush main, I decided to watch this video thinking that I’d be a step ahead, but instead I found that I wasn’t relating to any of the tactics that brushes were claimed to use, and it was at this moment that I realised I might just be a moron, and that’s why I tend to catch people off guard; I never have a plan and I’m very indecisive, therefore unpredictable.

Since I want us to rise and cause suffering, here's a tip to help counter this counter!: don't use a brush with a non-lethal bomb. (I'm looking at you inkbrush and octobrush Nouveau) You need something to help with your poopy range or when you have no entrance. Trust me, it makes a HUGE difference.

Vbrush is easily the best imo, it has splat bomb which is really good and a insta refill special that syncs really well with vbrush. My gear is full main saver for head gear, then next sub saver for the main ability and the rest swim speed up, for the last gear it's Stealth jump and the rest is SSU/IS (M)/ IS (S). I really like inkbrush and splat bomb is just so good as a get off me and displacement tool.

as an inkbrush main, I approve of this message! it often feels unfair that most of the splats I get are cheese because someone isnt actually paying attention. The strategy of a brush (at least at lower tiers) is simple- take advantage of people's tilt. If they're too dead set to be paying attention to You instead of The Objective-- newsflash, your team will score while the enemy team is too busy playing pop-goes-the-weasel with you. As a brush main, the objective is simply to be As Annoying As Physically Possible. If you turn off or manage your need to tilt, watch the brush, and keep a wide berth-- your skills against us will sharpen immensely.
I rarely play brushes, usually opting for slow weapons that often struggle against the high mobility weapons that can ignore having their feet painted (explosher problems). That said, I often see brushes going negative in the results screen and feel a little bad for them. So, shooter mains, please ignore Gem’s advice here and doggedly chase after brushes, especially around tight corners, unless you’re on my team.

The Undercovers and Tents kinda play like this too, just replace "corners and ledges" with "slopes and choke points". Still don't chase, cuz following weapons like that through chokes will let them soften you with mines, tracking, or whatever else they set up a few seconds earlier.

Not gonna lie, the thumbnail jumpscared me when I refreshed my subs on my phone lol.
This sorta reminds me of how I would need to play using dapples or sploosh, due to their similarly short range. I kinda like their playstyles but find it hard on the hands to take advantage of their ability to move around at high speeds. Also doesn't help that mid-range weapons are more popular now 😅

Brushes have trouble hitting upclose like blasters thanks to their disjointed hitbox, get to their personal space!
When a brush is running away from you it means theyre low on health! chase them down and make sure to follow their trail so you dont lose track of them :)
A Pro Brush player will always take down grouped players! make sure to seperate from your team to avoid their aggro
Brush Veterans go above walls to scan the area! use this opportunity to swim up to them and splat them while theyre distracted!
