      One element of his original character that I love, but don't remember if was ever explicitly stated in the reboot, is how Scrooge keeps him around specifically because he's one of the only pilots who's willing to go along with the crazy adventures the family partakes in. Gladstone Gander is written pretty inconsistently in the comics. Most of the time he's a hedonist who lavishes in the wealth he's gained from his luck and loves showing off, but sometimes you get stories where he's fed up with his supernatural fortune and wants to get rid of it so he can live a normal life. I feel like this episode is supposed to show a little bit of both characterisations, using a being that feeds on luck as a plot device to make his luck a problem right now, but not permanently.

      In the original comics, most of the characters find him super-obnoxious, whereas in the 80s version of DuckTales, everyone loves him; this one definitely splits the difference, with the kids initially being taken in by his flashiness only to eventually see him for the phoney he is, and whilst he was trapped because his supernaturally good luck couldn't just get him out of the situation, he never ends up having to learn anything because the universe just comtinually gives him whatever he wants all the time.

    Just to make the family connection clear, Gladstone Gander is Donald's paternal first cousin, and a popular character in Disney comics. And there's been plenty of explanations as to how he got his infuriatingly good fortune. Some say he was born under a lucky star, In many of the Italian comic books stories, Gladstone is bestowed with his luck because Fortuna, the goddess of fortune, is in love with him. And I one story, Gladstone was born on the day of his mother Daphne's birthday in 1920, under the protection sign of the Triple Distelfink, thus inheriting his mother's luck. Either way, he doesn't really have any ambitions or real achievements, so his lucky life is still a hollow one.

    Fun fact: In the original 1987 DuckTales, Donald Duck wasn't allowed to be in the show all that much due to his character being involved in other projects (he only made a few appearances in Season 1 as a guest character but never reappeared in later seasons) so the 2017 DuckTales crew made sure to make up for that by actually having him be around as a majorly re-occurring secondary character throughout the whole show's life.
    To be frank, I honestly do adore this show for how they handle Donald Duck because, since the biggest theme of the show revolves around family, the team behind the show actually gives Donald Duck the respect he deserves for being the surrogate father to his nephews due to their parents (more importantly, Donald's sister) was always absent/missing in all films, shows, and games (as well as...MOST comics). Like, no matter what other things he's been a part of, he's always been the one we see taking care of the triplets (with help from either Scrooge and the DuckTales character or with Daisy) so I'm glad we actually get to see Donald and the kids bond they way they do in this show.

      There's a similar thing that happened with the DC/Timmverse animated shows in the 00s and the various live action shows produced for CW and others - basically, from the third season of Justice League aka JLU s1 onward, all the main Batman villains got shunted into the background and weren't allowed to appear even in scenarios where it might make sense; it was informally known as the Batembargo, and it literally only existed because the film division of WB essentially called dibs on all the Batman stuff whilst they were developing what would become the Nolan trilogy. It even affected stuff like Smallville and the Arrowverse shows like when they introduced Task Force X and then had to cut half the members they planned to use because of the first Suicide Squad film - apparently didn't want to 'confuse' audiences, but all it did was end up forcing certain shows to not use characters or hastily write out ones they already introduced.

      And he is also just an interesting character with so much depth, where as characters like Mickey Mouse are just these good guys who always win at the end because they just are that good. They have no flaws, they are unrealistic and mpossible to relate to.

    Gladstone is voiced by Paul F. Thompkins, perhaps best known as Mr. Peanutbutter in Bojack Horseman. And I very much appreciate how clear it's made that his and Donald's respective luck is an actual, literal thing rather than just random coincidence like so many shows would do. This episode also introduces the thing that really makes Launchpad work despite the often irritating reliance on him being impossibly dumb: the implication that he occasionally goes through these epic adventures offscreen, and we only get the barest hints about them because he's not one to brag at all.

    One of the producers, Frank Angones, said they're mainly working off Don Rosa's Duck family tree for this show. So Gladstone is Donald and Della's first cousin on their father's side (their father's sister's son). That would technically make him the triplets' first cousin once removed. Not sure why the boys call him "Uncle Gladstone" instead of "Cousin Gladstone," but I guess that's a thing because my sis-in-law's family does that w/their first cousins once removed.
    And then Scrooge is Donald and Della's mother's brother, so he's not related to Gladstone by blood at all. In one comic, Gladstone referred to him as "my mother's brother's brother-in-law."

    Old Fogey time: Gladstone Gander is one of the really old Duck characters, but was oddly never really popular in animation, he mostly showed up in the Duck comics. I mean his entire gag was just *Oh boy I'm lucky* and yes the 20 dollars thing has always been the main running gag for him, he'd just find money or something good would happen and Donald standing right next to him would be hit with bad luck. Its worse when the two are standing together.

    While Donald is really unlucky, Gladstone isn't just extremely lucky, he is probably the character with the most luck in fiction.
    For example, in one of the comics (I don't remember if it is a Barks or Rosa (btw, "Life and times of Scrooge McDuck" from Don Rosa is a must read for absolute everybody!)) Donald finds a treasure map and after reading it he rips it into confetti and throws the pieces in a river so that Gladstone can't get his hands on it. But the current manipulates all the small pieces so that it is a perfect map again and Gladstone is on a bridge downstream and of course is very interested in the mysterious map...😂
    He is THAT kind of lucky!

    Since you're so complimentary of how they make the triplets so individual, I'll just point out this is one of the major departures from the original show, a GOOD departure. Originally the triplets were completely interchangeable and identical, carbon copies differentiated only by the colors. They even had the same voice actor doing all three. Imho, almost all the changes they made for this reboot improved the show and its storytelling.

    • @radicaladz
      @radicaladz 5 месяцев назад +6

      Their interchangeability was literally the plot of an episode where one of them got sick of being mistaken for the others and decided he was going to change his name and appearance to look more unique. In the original Donald Duck cartoons, there's a line in the theme where it goes "Who gets stuck with all the bad luck? No one, but Donald Duck." so it was kind of awesome to see the dichotomy between him and Gladstone Gander on full display in this episode since the latter is "the luckiest Goose in the World".

    And for today’s 2 lies and 1 truth:
    1. In a later episode, like next season later. we find out that launchpad is surprisingly a chick magnet, Like James Bond level of rizz. in fact, the episode in question involve the triplets and Webbie each trying to distract different girls from each other not realizing, that all four of the girls already know about each other and they’re perfectly fine launchpad.
    2. in the season finale it’s revealed that launchpad is actually the triplets father with amnesia. And because Scrooge never actually met him previously, never realized it.
    3. Sometime soon there’s going to be an episode involving magic, mini golf and kelpie voiced by My Little Pony VAs.

    As someone who is currently on my 9th rewatch of DuckTales, my favorite show ever, I have to highly recommend to *not* watch this in Production Order and to instead watch it in Airing Order, how the episodes were dropped to the world. I can see why from an outside perspective, it'd be wisest to start with the way the show's creators intended for you to watch it, but trust me when I say that this is one of those rare times where the creators are wrong about their own show, in the sense that they can't enjoy it as a viewer and understand what that experience is like.
    In the various ways I've watched this, along with new people each rewatch, Airing Order has always ensured the most engaging, most attached, and most captivating experience of the show. It's had people hooked and made them fans. Every time Production or Disney+ Order was tried, the people I was watching it with ended up dropping the show because it just didn't hook them. All us fans from when the show was airing got hooked exactly from that order. That airing order. I don't even necessarily think the Airing or Production Order are *too* different, but the results speak for themselves.
    The way the channel released them despite the Production Codes is just the prime way DuckTales is meant to be watched, and it's not something the producers are going to understand because they've advocated for their intended order to be the official way on all of Disney's platforms. It's not like there's egregious episode discrepancies via Airing Order, either. No drastic differences. The season finale still comes at the end, the story beats are still told when they're supposed to be, and everything remains in chronological order from a plot standpoint by just watching Airing Order. If you didn't know about it from people talking about what the creators wanted, you wouldn't even be able to tell that the Production Codes of episodes are not in meticulous order.
    I'd recommend going in Airing Order from whatever point you're at forward. I love this show to bits, and as a fan that's ran through watching this with a variety of people, I just have to put out there that Airing Order is the prime way to experience this show, despite what you've heard from people advocating for the producers' intentions!

    Principal that I've learned as someone that has been growing up and living in Vegas: never gamble unless you know you have the odds in your favor of winning

    • @radicaladz
      @radicaladz 5 месяцев назад

      Honestly, anything you gamble, eventually, you're gonna lose. Also, the Dunning Kruger effect seems to abnormally effect gamblers, because no matter what you tell them, they're always going to base their assumptions and biases on what they think will work and rationalise their strategy based on that. I've seen people repeatedly hit 21 from 17 or split 10s at Blackjack, thinking it's a good strategy, yet can't understand why they end up losing their money. Most gamblers (and even some dealers) I speak to can't wrap their heads around the Monty Hall problem, because they don't actually understand that it's not a 50/50 chance - it's 2/3rds odds of winning if you switch but only 1/3rd if you don't, and the probability locks in once you make the choice, but they will insist to the contrary that it must be 50/50 despite actual testing bearing out the math that switching your choice increases your chance of winning; people want to believe that their original choice was correct, but that bias is effectively handicapping their ability to respond to new information.

    Back then to me he was rather annoying. And at first when I finally sat down to watch the DuckTales 2017 reboot he was still annoying.
    But then something changed. Something very subtle. Something that is not in your face but slowly takes shape over the course of time through the series.
    All the characters in the reboot have been upgraded from their original appearances back in the 80s. Launchpad has been too.

    Duck Tales has existed as a comic book for over 80 years. The 1987 cartoon series re-used plot threads but had to work with the limitations of not being allowed to use several canon characters including Donald Duck. This is why Launchpad McQuak exists. This new series has unfortunately dumbed him down and I'd guess it's because he no longer has to fill Donald's role, but leaving him out would deny fans of the 80's cartoon one of their favorite characters. Many old characters have been changed dramatically but his is by far the worst. The nephews were so identical in every way that their character art was literally the exact same with a color change. Mrs. Beakly was changed from a dithering old housemaid, Webby was a useless little girl and several upocoming characters are almost unrecongnizable compared to their original counterparts. There are easter eggs buried deep all over this series for fans of the comics and 80's cartoon including references to other Disney afternoon shows at the time like Goof Troop, Rescue Rangers, Talespin, Darkwing Duck and a blink and you'll miss it reference to Gargoyles.
