  • Mark Selby and Scott Donaldson claim that there are discrepancies between break size and score. They claim failures in the marker twice. The referee does not speak English fluently, so Brendan Moore enters the scene to help solve the problem.

      Yeah I thought that was the reason. 147+ break attempt would have been a good title, but it wouldn't be accurate.. Oh well, with so many games televised nowadays I'm sure we will see someone make that historical feat one day! I'm still gutted by Liang Wenbo missing the last black to make that historical double maximum break in the same game! :) Wendy Jans also had a good attempt at becoming the first woman to make a televised maximum break.

    I don't see the big fuss in some of the comments. He is genuinely confused at how the score is so is Scott. And then he asked if the top 147 prize is still available even tho not a traditional way of making it. They are playing for cash so he needs to know this before he takes his next shot. Anyways its just a lapse in concentration and he said nothing wrong to anyone at all just was querying the score....

      I've only just started watching snooker on RUclips. I spotted the free eight points at the start. The four blues ( negating the free eight points ) would have made for an interesting 147. Given that there was a question as to how the prize money would be awarded, Selby was being quite the gentleman by sinking a blue to avoid controversy. If no one had already scored a maximum in the tournament, I'd say go for it. However, I wouldn't want to be the guy to take prize money from someone else on a technicality. However (again), if there was a chance for 148 or higher, go for it.

  • @sunmod1529
    @sunmod1529 4 года назад +25

    With the free ball there are 16 reds available
    Up to the where he started arguing he pot
    1 free ball + black = 8
    4 reds with 4 blues = 24
    4 reds 4 blacks = 32
    1 red = 1
    And that's when he paused. The break up to that point is correct 65. Selby confused himself because for one he didn't know how many blues he had potted..he kept saying 2. Where as he had potted 4. And he didn't realise that 147 with 16 reds on table isn't a maximum. 155 would be. The 4 blues he potted accounts for the difference of 8 points. This should make it clearer.

    • @LouiseTaylor-ub5zq

      No, the 2 fouls at the beginning made it 8 then he potted the free ball cause that 1 so it totals to 9, so the referee is 8 points behind everything

      Thanks for the info, I just watched that 16 red balls clearance from 1990. I'm surprised that Selby didn't think/care about this unique chance from the beginning, even if he was losing by a frame. Especially since he has already won most tournaments and made multiple maximum breaks. I'm sure Ronnie would have gone for it!

      Does that mean that he would have taken the highest break prize away from o Sullivan and Bingham but not the maximum prize :D ? If you think about it with a free ball the maximum break can only be 155 because it's the maximum points available in that moment...right? There oughtn't have been any controversy if he had have made a 147 break, it's not a maximum. If you argue it is because of the number of points then you would be penalizing a player for making a similar break to this, but instead of taking 4 blues only taking 3 and ending with a 149. It does bring up an interesting question as to whether a 155 would be considered a maximum though, I'd argue that it should. As well as the fact that it would be legitimately more difficult to achieve just by virtue of the 2 extra pots, it is also legitimately the highest possible break in the game.
    One possible argument against might be the increased fortune involved in beginning the break from a free ball position, but all you're really saying is it's slightly more fortunate than a normal maximum starting from a position where the black is available and attainable from the first shot.

They just basically said, keep playing and we'll see what happens, but I don't think they knew themselves. Also, I agree that Selby didn't need to apologise to the Chinese ref. Nobody did anything wrong. Selby was confused and asked for explanation... after he received it, he didn't argue or question it, he accepted it straightaway. So he wasn't being rude. in a single break run, one can only be awarded free ball once to account for the 16 reds. Higher than 16 reds you need another "free-ball foul" from the opponent. 155 is the highest possible maximum break. only 147 possible then because 4 blues were potted, so couldn't get higher than 147 either. They should honour him the to share the highest break price money for 147, but then the maximum break price was not for him because he had the chance of making 155 but he potted 4 blues. The difficulty of "potting only blacks" followed by all the reds should surpass the potting of any other colours.

      It's not really clear, because no-one has gotten 148+ before (in a serious-enough setting to be well-known). Players might reasonably think that the criteria for a prize is simply "147+", rather than "all reds + all blacks + all colours AND 147+".

      What happens if you pot your free ball and then a color other than black and then go on to make 15 reds 15 blacks and clear the colors. That should probably also count as a maximum although its not entirely fair is it? You might use your first two shots to break open a pack or something...and make the clearance "easier". A bit controversial. Certainly potting anything other than 15 blacks after the first two shots for the free ball will not count as a maxi. I guess its just the true 155 then.

      @Steven-ze2zk 4 года назад

      Ruben Pereda If you pot a color other than the black off your free ball and then proceed to pot the rest of the reds with blacks and clear the colors you have not made a maximum. There are only two ways to make a maximum. 15 reds with blacks or 16 reds with blacks. The first nets you 147 points and the second gets you eight more points for a total of 155. The reason for the free ball will determine what the final score shows...155, 156, 157 or 158...your break on the table will be 155 if you potted the required 16 blacks with reds.

He's officially allowed to be wrong, no comebacks. Also once a score is incorrectly announced and the next shot is taken, theres no comeback, the error stands the instant the white ball is struck following the wrong call. It has to be challenged instantly or not at all. To cap it all he was wrong, not the ref.

      The break only counts for points scored by potting balls in consecutive order. You could make 2 breaks in a game of 70 points each, but that doesn't make for a break of a 140. Yes in theory a 155 is not that highest attainable score but it is the highest possible break

      Oh! Yes, I see what you mean. The foul, even if it didn't split the break up into two parts, would still not be points scored ON that break. That makes sense, thanks!

    Aside from the prize money, I know exactly how Selby feels. I once was so excited about making an unassisted double play in softball that I failed to notice it could have been a triple play if I had just flipped the ball to my teammate.

    If the player thinks there is an issue with the scoring, he is entitled to investigate. I'm not a Selby fan but even his opponent was in agreement.
