to save time go to 08:40. regards referee, you need to consider what he is seeing as reference, - at 09:14 this shows the cue ball in the correct position, but the reference picture changes at 09:23 showing a difference position. hardly the referees fault that he was provide with an incorrect position. Then when Ronnie queried, they again present an incorrect image to the referee at 09:45 which indicates he has the ball in the correct place (according to the image provided). Clearly this was not correct, i am unsure where the tv producers got the wrong reference from, - originally the referee has the length correct and moved the que back towards the cushion based on the image he was provided with. The referee even says at 09:52 "i also thought it was further but the screen says different" and at 10:52 ! Stop giving the Referee such a hard time, he asked for an image and was given duff info. The cameraman did not correct it, the cameraman showed him a difference image which the referee then reacted to. The referee was patient and did everything correct based on the information provided to him. Player and referee were let down by those providing the images.
This. Ref actually did good joob. He sorted it out and it went right in the end. It is clear that it was his fault whos job was to provide that reference picture. People need to remember that what you see in youtube (=in tv broadcast) its not what ref sees. He did not see what we saw, he saw different picture and placed ball according to that and as @andy said you can even hear ref saying that he thought also that the white was in different place.
To be honest, it might have looked like a small difference, but from experience there’s a HUGE difference when playing the shot with and without your hand on the table.
Ronnie has done this multiple times. always after he lays down for the shot. he knows exactly where the balls where and the important ones needs to be in the exact spot.
Im delighted that Ronnie equaled hendries 7 it would be a great shame for him not to beat the record with 8 titles at least or 9 no one will ever be able to do what Ronnie has done the best of all time i only wished Jimmy White got one out of the 6 finals i didnt like Davis then hendrie over them beating Jimmy White
I love this about snooker. A player disagrees with the referee calm and collected, turns around and sits back on his seat and stays persistent untill all agree on the proceedings.
That's called dissent and in most sports is punished as it should be. I mean it was quite clearly in the wrong spot but just take your medicine and get on with it.
It's not simple to make it precise enough (although it is possible), but the bigger problem is that the table has to be well lit, which would interfere with the projection clarity and light intensity. The projector would also have to be installed so that there's no way for it to move from the originally mapped position. Lastly, it would be a considerable additional expense and a logistic nightmare to implement discipline-wide, whereas the camerawork is already there and is easily accessible.
A better solution would be some sort of sensor + laser system, wherein the sensors would detect the balls within a table-sized matrix, and a laser would be able to pinpoint the exact position of a selected ball. That would also be expensive, but much more elegant and significantly more error proof.
A million times? I have watched just about all these videos and I have only seen one or two suggestions about overhead cameras. I think you are exaggerating somewhat.

Even his very laugh could make spring roses bloom from their buds, and his followers adored him for his easy ways and the bright glorious smile with which he could light up the whole world. He was the Sun, and despite their differences, he shared with the Moon a great friendship and respect. You are incorrect in suggesting that the referee was at fault here. He was replacing the cue ball based on an image on the screen that was incorrect. It is also inaccurate to suggest poor refereeing by asking Yan what he thought. This is specifically referred to in the rules of snooker as consultation following a miss, where the referee will check with both players when replacing balls. The rules also state that the referee may use other evidence at his/her disposal in order to make decisions, and it can be seen that Jan goes and checks a replay from a cameraman. So in fact this is a good example of excellent refereeing!
Not referee's fault, the shot we were looking at wasn't the same shot he was being shown, so he conducted himself properly. Whoever chose the original shot was in the wrong.
Yeah that’s exactly what I was screaming the whole time. The ref seemed pretty professional throughout the exchange and followed up on the challenge spot and even went to the camera mans camera. To me that is exactly what a good ref would and should do if it is a questionable.
@@waynewayne9693 and @HowAboutNo I am glad to see a couple other right thinking people. I am always amazed at the "armchair referees" in comments who actually understand little about how it works. Referees are competency tested every year, players are not. Yes, Ronnie was surely correct (his feel and intuition are amazing), but not nearly as exaggerated as this video makes it appear. I haven't read all comments but literally NONE of the comments I have read even mention the fact that when this video switches view back and forth, then not only yes, the White ball is changing position, but THE BACKGROUND IS ALSO CHANGING POSITION! So yes, position is off a little but not nearly as much as the stills make it seem. When Yan Bingtao was asked by Referee his opinion, he should have responded, "Put it where Ronnie says he wants it" and that would have ended the incident but I am not certain of Yan's English skills so maybe he didn't know what to say. By the Rules, the Ref is required to "consult" both players but he is also free to abide by or completely ignore their opinions in this matter.
@Wayne Wayne and @HowAboutNo To be clear, there are several screen switches in the video. I am referring specifically to the 11:00 mark switching where it looks like the cue ball changes a lot but indeed the background is also changing.
Think it was obvious that the referee was, for some reason, being fed different images to what the commentators and TV audience was seeing. I mean, anyone in the hall could have placed the ball correctly based on the images we saw. Well handled all round, though the commentator might have countenanced that possibility.
The ref was initially shown the wrong image when he initially lined it up. Then the image changed to the correct one but the ref didn't notice and thought it was still in the same place.
13:00 the knobhead shouting "get in" due to a near miss by Ronnie's opponent. I've no objection to them shouting it when Ronnie makes a great pot and creates his own luck. It's just a bad show when they do this.
The poor referee was not to blame, he was not given the right information. Garbage in, garbage out. Ronnie was right in pointing it out, that inch difference made the shot harder to play.
They have camera's. All they need is a laser pointer the size of the white and they're set. There's loads of image recognition AI out there for free if they want to automate it...
Projector above the table that can project the table onto itself showing the table as it was at any given time... Simple .. doesn't need to be on during normal play as they can be noisy but they could switch it on when replacing balls
It is good they can use the screen to check these days as sometimes the way the balls are placed affect how difficult or easy the shot is so the balls need to go back exactly as they were
I have always appreciated your editing skills, BUT when the good old Ronnie is playing, usually there is no need for editing because he rarely takes more than a few seconds between the shots.
They need an overhead camera to avoid the perspective issues and a laser light that puts a grid on the table whilst the ref is trying to put it in the right spot.
to simple and easy of a solution .. which means it cant be right , with so much tech these days able to make the right calls in almost every sport , yet they still refuse to use it in a lot of cases when not only would it speed up in some sports long delays , but also end up making the right call and removes the chances for suspect ref calls
I don't think that this incident is that big of a deal to warrant a 15 minute video for. If the uploader wanted to show this incident then why just have the video shorter to the point of the incident, why? Well because the uploader wants more ad revenue
No idea why World Snooker hasn't sorted this simple technology for the accurate replacement of balls after a foul and a miss yet, and no idea why the referee would argue with Ronnie when the video clearly showed the ball was inches out of place and he HAS to ask both players if they're happy with the positions of the replaced balls anyway!
Apparently VAR was originally used to decide where the ball should go but was dismissed because they came to the conclusion that Man United should have been awarded a penalty.
Enough with the suggestions on projectors and lasers. Build a time machine. Then you can just rewind the table to EXCACTLY where all the balls were prior to the foul. The player won't even need to chalk for the second try.
It's not for Yan to say, but still , he could have said "Ronnie is right" so that would have been the end of it. It would not decide the match if Ronnie plays 2 cm nearer. Ronnie knew that too but he insisted because he knew he was right, and I understand him.
Well, I don't think it was the distance to the ball he was bothered about. Getting your bridge hand flat on the table makes fire a much better shot than partly on the cushion.
i think maybe if u are forced to put your hand partially on the cushion for the "replayed shot", when previously you had your whole hand fit on the table, it's pretty obvious the ball isn't in the right position XD
I remember once when Selby played in WC QF and told Peter Scullion to get his eyes tested... I think got the wrong ref. Piss poor that, very clear to see the screen was correct and wasn't saying different. That's what it's there for lol
it's CRYSTAL CLEAR that Ronnie had his FULL palm on the table the first time .. why can't the refferee understand it is beyond my wildest imagination! 😂😂😂😂
Instead of all this talk about technology why not just use an overlay same as they do now but use a bird’s eye view shot instead of the broadcast view. That would ensure the ball is in exactly the same place every single time and there would be no need to spend money to get technology involved.
It's a good question, and I guess the answer is an often used word in Snooker 'percentages' He did have a pretty low percentage shot on probably the black, to get onto a possibly low percentage shot (depending on how well he landed on it) on the red, to get onto the black again. Yan is an attacking player, but perhaps that was going too far for him, also... ...at this point he would still have needed to pot the very unattainable (and difficult to gain position from) blue (on the top cushion) at least in order to win the match. The yellow is also way off its spot, which hardly helps. He reasoned that the clearance from that position was extremely low percentage. So either, go for it and likely mess up, or take this golden opportunity to play safe. He opted for playing a very high percentage safety using the two colours which were a hurdle to winning the match, he figured, at least he would leave Ronnie in a safe (perhaps even difficult) position...and he may even leave the yellow and blue in positions far more likely for him to be able to win the match. If there's any criticism I'd make in his shot choice in this frame, this wouldn't be one.
I know this is an old upload but for God sake I've said this time and time again. We have the tech, place a projector overlay that displays the balls prior to the shot taken. I mean come on!!! It infuriates me. They could even use lasers with pin point accuracy to track and record ball position.
I'm guessing he can tell easily from his left hand. In the first position he could bridge comfortably, in the 2nd his wrist was probably resting on the cushion Edit: looking again, in the 2nd, his Palm is on the cushion. I'd be pretty certain it's in the wrong place at that point
@@wasiqafzal2093 In the real World if you have attitude just because you are right then you are a word I won't put on here,no different just because you're someone's Idol.
It makes a huge difference whether or not the player can actually get his hand flat on the table. If he could for the original shot he should also be able to on the next shot.
Should not argue with Ronnie. He is ultimate. He is snooker. He must have been born on a snooker table. He has a snooker brain. We do not need camera picture. This man seems to have a photographic memory. If all the balls were removed in the middle of a game I would not be surprised if he was able to put them all back exactly in their right places.
Put a tablet in the refs hand, with a live video overlaid with the original position, which he can zoom right in on. The tv screen is a bit silly, especially when it apparently can't be zoomed in
It would be so easy to take the very critical balls off the table with the marker and simply mark the position with chalk spray, just a small point mark would be enough.
I know this isn't a massive issue but to be fair the implementation of the technology is very poor. They have the screen and comparisons all ready but the ref needs to follow instructions and look at it from far away. There must be a better way to place balls back on spots. Loads of referees have to second guess themselves and ask for other opinions because they can't tell from where they're from.
Honestly, I was thinking the same thing. No one said it mattered or that anyone should care. He just looks cooler with longer hair in my opinion as well.
@@-Twotonepony- You know what, i prefer long drinks with gin over most beer.... worth mentioning, eh? And, more importantly, i sure hope O'Sullivan agrees with me! Coz i think he'd be a lot cooler if he preferred long drinks over beer.... not that it matters, just thought i'd tell you that. i really don't like him at all, to be honest, if he prefers beer...he should really read this comment, contemplate upon it, take my advice to heart and start preferring long drinks.
At 2:39 O'Sullivan shoots a wired combo to the side pocket and the crowd claps like it's a great shot. As any pool player can tell you, a wired combo is almost impossible to miss so it essentially tells you how much the crowd really knows about pool.
Ronnie has probably been losing more than winning in recent years. Passed his prime, ever a genius has to fold in time. Had a great season in 23/24. Time to retire.
I don't see any big issue here, as Ronnie had central contact on the red then it was compulsory to call it as "A Miss", it would have been a miss even were central contact not avaiable. So were he to miss it again from the same place then after it was put back the second time then he would have been warned, were he playing from a different place that count would start again. In any regard this was all done as it should have been, the non offender put it back and that gave him the chance for a warning to happen were Ronnie to miss twice, Ronnie thought it was not where it was so there was a discussion about that and then Ronnie was happy so he then hit it the second time, it took a few minutes more than it should have but this was quite normal so I see nothing to suggest a referee mistake did happen, this happens all the time and is harder to get right when there are no cameras. The rules say that if the players can't agree where the balls get placed, then the referee decides that on his own and the game goes on, there is never any real certainty the balls will be exactly where they were even with camera support, so the referee has to decide so the game can go forward. N
I largely agree with you, and I also don't blame this ref. I'm sure you'd agree that where this 'kind' of tournament is concerned, this 'kind' of error ought to be more avoidable than in a county match in the local snooker club. That being said, it mostly is, this rarely happens, usually the technology works. But that doesn't mean it's unreasonable to demand that improvements are made in either technology or oversight in order to continue to make hold ups like we see in this frame less and less common...it's called progress. But you may disagree!
@@carlhartwell7978, video did show it was not where it should have been so Ronnie was quite entitled to have the cue ball back to where it was, the first try at putting it back was not perfect, overall it was sorted out, as I said I see no real error here, this happens all the time. N
@@billiardsandsnookervideosn8319 All we can see is the television footage as far as I know, I'm not entirely sure what video the ref is looking at. If you are then correct me... I'm not an insider, all I know is that often, including in this case, the commentators (using presumably the same view as the outside broadcast) are often perplexed that the ref (having looked at presumably some alternate _in house_ camera/software) places the ball incorrectly. I just assume it's because different cameras/software is used, because I don't think the ref is unable to use his eyes. If they are the same, why on earth is this ref placing the ball so incorrectly (as per the way we and the commentators can see it)? They literally would only have to superimpose the old image on top of the new image (like we see) and place the current cue ball on top of the old cue ball. My guess is that they use the same camera with some software and _something_ has gone wrong with that software, but because it's independent to what WE see, we're are able to notice the difference, and the refs are not. Hence in the end the ref had to abandon the 'screen' method and just go old school.

to simple and easy of a solution .. which means it cant be right , with so much tech these days able to make the right calls in almost every sport , yet they still refuse to use it in a lot of cases when not only would it speed up in some sports long delays , but also end up making the right call and removes the chances for suspect ref calls
I don't think that this incident is that big of a deal to warrant a 15 minute video for. If the uploader wanted to show this incident then why just have the video shorter to the point of the incident, why? Well because the uploader wants more ad revenue
I still miss the late Ted Lowe,, and some of his great sayings,, like his looked at the blue 2-3times now,, and it still aznt moved😌😂👍God bless

@@stonedagain5191 Yes, it's on the list and also the one that ALS Stewart likes about Terry Griffiths looking at the balls.
No idea why World Snooker hasn't sorted this simple technology for the accurate replacement of balls after a foul and a miss yet, and no idea why the referee would argue with Ronnie when the video clearly showed the ball was inches out of place and he HAS to ask both players if they're happy with the positions of the replaced balls anyway!
the screen he was shown looked correct, that's why he would argue...
Apparently VAR was originally used to decide where the ball should go but was dismissed because they came to the conclusion that Man United should have been awarded a penalty.

Why is there not a camera above the table?
Yan's shoes are the clear winner in this match.
Can't help but notice that both Ronnie and Yang missed the same pocket with jump ball 🤨
O'Sullivan's cueball control in that first clearance.
Ronnie is so natural with his left some people just don't see he has changed hands.
He's Ambidextrous!!!!!!!!!!
@@146- Isn't that what I said but in a different way.
Kinda!!
Impressed with Bingtao...Fearless and respectful.
Enough with the suggestions on projectors and lasers. Build a time machine. Then you can just rewind the table to EXCACTLY where all the balls were prior to the foul. The player won't even need to chalk for the second try.
How is respotting a cue ball still an issue in this day and age???
Never argue with a genius
Those shoes are v cool
If they could view the table from more than 1 angle it would be obvious
Why no camera above table
It's not for Yan to say, but still , he could have said "Ronnie is right" so that would have been the end of it. It would not decide the match if Ronnie plays 2 cm nearer. Ronnie knew that too but he insisted because he knew he was right, and I understand him.
Well, I don't think it was the distance to the ball he was bothered about. Getting your bridge hand flat on the table makes fire a much better shot than partly on the cushion.
@@georgehumphrey7178 Oh yes of course!
9:32 lmaorotfl Marginally off!! Ronnie's face looks like he's just spotted a massive turd on the table 😂
Why still no top view camera?😩 and ronnie usually never wrong about that since his eyes really sharp haha
i think maybe if u are forced to put your hand partially on the cushion for the "replayed shot", when previously you had your whole hand fit on the table, it's pretty obvious the ball isn't in the right position XD
The words piss up and brewery spring to mind.
The whole incident made Bingtao lose his rhythm. Very unfair
LOL
Whats unfair about it? The rules say the balll MUST be replaced correctly.
I remember once when Selby played in WC QF and told Peter Scullion to get his eyes tested... I think got the wrong ref. Piss poor that, very clear to see the screen was correct and wasn't saying different. That's what it's there for lol
well, that was exciting...
This was sooooooo bad. Ronnie had his bridge hand on the table first time. This is essential fact and game changer.
What does this comment even mean
@@Fingersofjoy Look from 10:13 onwards

it's CRYSTAL CLEAR that Ronnie had his FULL palm on the table the first time .. why can't the refferee understand it is beyond my wildest imagination! 😂😂😂😂
O’Sullivan is the best!
Instead of all this talk about technology why not just use an overlay same as they do now but use a bird’s eye view shot instead of the broadcast view. That would ensure the ball is in exactly the same place every single time and there would be no need to spend money to get technology involved.
05:44 The evidence, that he drinks Vodka instead of water ;)
Next weeks "incident" - player has button undone.
Why did they applaude at 12:30? The safety wasn't that good...
Why he played that shot at 8:00
It's a good question, and I guess the answer is an often used word in Snooker 'percentages'
He did have a pretty low percentage shot on probably the black, to get onto a possibly low percentage shot (depending on how well he landed on it) on the red, to get onto the black again.
The snooker table should just be a big touchscreen that is constantly on Microsoft paint

Ref the last man in room to see mistake
I know this is an old upload but for God sake I've said this time and time again. We have the tech, place a projector overlay that displays the balls prior to the shot taken. I mean come on!!! It infuriates me. They could even use lasers with pin point accuracy to track and record ball position.
the ref looked at the wrong image and kept refering to that
Ронни💯👍
11:15 Yan Bingtao is scurviness. He refused to help referee.
how is he supposed to rememeber the exact position of the ball without playing it?
To still clearly remember where the cue ball or any balls was after a fault is pure genius in all senses
Dude that's just normal ! Not everything he touch is holy he's not snooker Jesus n he's cry baby no other player has his attitude with referees
@@HIHaiki you are a hater. The reason he has attitude is because he is right. Stupid people like you won't understand
I'm guessing he can tell easily from his left hand. In the first position he could bridge comfortably, in the 2nd his wrist was probably resting on the cushion
Edit: looking again, in the 2nd, his Palm is on the cushion. I'd be pretty certain it's in the wrong place at that point

all this fuss just for the sake of a few inches.... said my ex
It makes a huge difference whether or not the player can actually get his hand flat on the table. If he could for the original shot he should also be able to on the next shot.
that's what she said.
Yep! Said that to me too. Think just looking for a bigger stick to wrap both hands around.
@@josephwolfe1833 it's called a joke pal
Sometimes a few inches is all the difference in the world, sometimes it isn't. Depends on the kind of queu in use. 😜
Should not argue with Ronnie. He is ultimate. He is snooker. He must have been born on a snooker table. He has a snooker brain. We do not need camera picture. This man seems to have a photographic memory. If all the balls were removed in the middle of a game I would not be surprised if he was able to put them all back exactly in their right places.
robbed his shoes from a bowling alley
Ref is blind as thats a 2 inch offspot, he needs his eyes fixed.
What's the outro music?
poor marking by the video referee. Even the floor referee knows that the white is in the wrong place..
The ref was reluctant to move that white forward
That right pot refuses to get a pot :D
Am I the only one that doesn't really like O'Sullivan with short hair....
Who cares if you like him with short hair?
The referee should have gone to Specsavers. Even Stevie Wonder could have got that one right.

"They've both played their part Yan included " durr...
Why don't they use a birds eye camera for this can see how bad it's off with birds eye veiw
