We are one humanity on this planet, we need to understand that better. We were on a cruise ship with 3000 passengers from US to Portugal, arriving the day after US elections and not once was there a single political conversation had!
I have had such wonderful experiences when traveling, but I try very hard to show the good qualities of our people everywhere I go. I recognize this in you both as well-you are wonderful ambassadors for the US.
I love your practical advice, I subscribe to many travel channels, but I always go back to your channel for great travel advice for Americans. Thank you!
Well done. Thanks for not weighing in. So true about the Visa moving target in some countries. Just returned from 3 weeks in Barcelona and everyone was friendly. Did experience a large protest over some local issue one night but you can get that in Paris on a weekly basis, their always mad about something. My experience has been that most people are just living their lives. There’s a curiosity about US politics rather than opinions.
The curiosity over opinion is a correct statement. In no way has anyone been combative. with us about our politics in the US. We are all just trying to live a happy life! Thank you for adding to the channel!! 😊
I was just thinking how lucky you both are to be already living your life OUTSIDE of the US - those of us still here are thinking about emigrating under this soon to be crazy regime. Hope you are enjoying the respite from all the craziness to come in the US.
When traveling, it’s a safe bet if someone asks about your thoughts on politics, just deflect the question and ask them what they think. More often than not, they’re asking because they have strong opinions and you can entertain their perspective without ruffling any feathers.
Politics were part of the reasons why my wife and I started full-time slow travel back in April. It's refreshing to not have to deal with that drama all the time now, with how bad it's been in the U.S. for a while now.
@BrianandCarrie True enough. We haven't watched TV in months, but as you know, when you have to constantly be on RUclips, you're going to run into it...😆
It’s eye-opening to see how politics can shape travel trends, influence destination choices, and even impact travelers' experiences. Thank you for diving into this complex issue!
It's also important to remember that people of different ethnic groups from the US experience traveling differently. As a black female traveler, who has traveled alone, with other black americans, and recently, with an ethnically diverse group of 10 friends, people from other countries have different perceptions about and reactions to, black americans. It's often because they're not sure about our country of origin, and many are not familiar with the US history, they are puzzled when I tell them I am American. .When I was in Panama, I was often mistaken as being Panamanian. Many people in europe assumed I was from Africa. I found people were often unsure how to approach political issues with me. I was on a food tour in italy and met a couple women from australia. They were careful to find out what my perceptions were before they started making comments about our political candidates. ( I learned that many australians have very strong opinions about Trump!.) But overall, I had almost nothing but positive experiences this year in Antigua, Panama, Rome,, Turkey, Greece, Dublin, Albania, and London. The only incident that we believe was race related was being the only ones in a group stopped and slightly interrogated, when deplaning to a German airport. But I very much have enjoyed this channel, and appreciate that you were willing to tackle a difficult topic.
Leslie, how did you feel about Albania? Were you in Tirana? I've heard good and bad things.....horrible things about animal treatment....may be overblown because most say positive things. Americans as of now can stay there up to a year without a Visa...as someone who may be doing at least a year of slow travel and needing to get out before Jan 20th....I have to starting narrowing things down. Thanks for you insights. Have you been to Dominica? Have heard such good things and it's off the tourist radar for the Caribbean
Totally agree that one's national politics tend to follow you on travel. Also, in some cultures, politics is not a taboo topic for conversation like it is in the US (with the exception of social media). However, there isn't a nation on this planet that isn't mired in historical and present day political issues and the US is no exception. I try my best to remind myself, and others when asked, that despite the US motto, "people" are not their "government."
Thanks for sharing your experiences via your great videos. I stumbled across your channel through your Koh Samui videos as my wife and I i are spending a month bewteen Cambodia and Thailand next February. Koh Samui looks great and has been included into our holiday. Your channel though has us seriously considering longer term travel options. I'm really looking forward to watching more of your content. Now subscribed! ❤👍
Thank you, Aaron!! Koh Samui is a great spot to slow down and relax. We appreciate the kind words and thank you again for watching and subscribing!! 😊❤️ Safe travels!!
We changed our plans two months ago due to the uncertanitity of our political changes that will take nplace in the next few days. we were all set for our trip that icluded one month in Egypt and and 5 weeks in Turkey. While my wife and I are pretty open to most places to travel to and we do enough homework to see which which countries are safe to go to and plan accordingly. But with the issues we are facing as a country and whats happening in Israel, we decided to make those changes and not visit Turkey right now. Thanks for your video.
I am sorry to hear that you had to make those changes! It is always hard to cancel trips, especially when you have been looking forward to them. It is always best to do the research and do what's best. Thank you for watching and adding to the channel. Continued safe travels!!
Great video! As an expat traveling through Mexico for almost ten years, I can honestly say I have never met kinder, gentler people. Our first Election Day we were caught off guard by our state being ‘dry’, I couldn’t comprehend why I couldn’t buy a beer :). Little did I know it was getting me ready for dry storm days, pandemic, etc…. Keep traveling, keep posting videos.
Good morning! I had to chuckle when you talked about entertaining the idea of wearing something with a big maple leaf. I was doing volunteer work in Kenya a month after the U.S. embassy bombing in the 90's, and a fellow volunteer gave me a Canadian maple leaf patch to put on my backpack so I'd be safer. Thank you for sharing your journey!
We were traveling in Europe in 2019 and we got lots of comments about how our countrymen elected such a person to be president. We were talking about wishing we could pass for Canadian as we got in the hotel elevator with a lovely elderly couple with Maple Leaf luggage, jackets and the husband also had a maple leaf ball cap. We told them how we were feeling and they chimed in with their middle America accents. They were from Iowa. 😊
Many nomads can now say goodbye to ACA subsidies and protections for pre-existing conditions. Woe to those folks not already retired and taking Social Security.
Way to go Brian and Carrie! Thank you for this video! Your headline, of course, got my attention, because I don't do politics. It's ugly. However, it's important to know about it when traveling the world. My 18 yr. old son is about to travel alone throughout Southeast Asia for the first time. Thanks so much for tips and FYI on world travel as US citizens. Cheers!🍺🏖
I’m heading to cams and qro in a month nice to hear you feel safe though I expected that to be the case as I picked those areas with this factor in mind.
I believe that your video implicitly stated the following about domestic politics and a visitor's opinions. As a visitor, whether you are going to a foreign country, or even another state in your own country - don't get involved in their local issues. Locals generally consider it offensive for a visitor to interject their opinion or advocacy into issues for a place they don't live. Just listen to the locals discuss or complain about their situation, don't provide your opinion, even if they ask for it. Best way to keep the peace and stay out of trouble.
I sometimes think twice about admitting we’re British! 😅 Love following your travels, we aim to be doing the same (minus selling our house) in a few years 😊
You handled this topic well Another effect of world politics that I have observed is other travelers. Here in Thailand the war in the Ukraine resulted in a lot of Russians coming to Thailand, particularly Phuket, and they ended up raising visa agent prices and local rents.
There is a saying in Turkey: Geography is destiny. On one side, there are Middle Eastern countries where troubles abound, and on the other side, there are peaceful countries such as Norway and New Zealand.
We never really leave the school yard bullies behind! 😅 Imagine a world where people were kind and respectful to each other. What a beautiful world we would have ❤
Thanks for your informative videos and sharing your experiences. As someone in shock over our U.S. election, I need to nail down a leave plan. I was set on Portugal but as an early retiree who took SS early and need it, their tax change makes it impossible now. We do have a tax treaty with France but who knows how much will change when we get pulled from NATO. But, I digress. Have been hearing Mexico is stamping entries differently and not necessarily giving U.S. citizens the 6 mo stay which has been standard. What have you experienced? Thanks
We arrived in Mexico City from the US and received the 180-day visa without issue. Countries like Portugal are becoming more difficult all the time and like you said, who knows what the future holds? 🤔
I think what some people who criticize America may not fully realize is that without the Pax Americana offered by the US, many countries that enjoy relatively unrestricted trade would never have achieved any degree of wealth. Following World War II, the Americans offered to provide military protection, largely through its navy, to allow the nations of the world to trade, and thus we had an unprecedented growth of world trade. In part, the Americans did this to offset the Cold War but it also helped in the rebuilding of Europe and other parts of the world following the devastation of WW II. In short, because of the Americans willingness to provide this defence umbrella, with a cost estimated at 50 percent of the US GDP since 1945, countries in Europe were able to afford such things as universal health care. The Marshall Plan following WW II was responsible for the rebuilding of shattered economies in Europe, including Germany, allowing it to become amongst the wealthiest nations in the world. I write this as a Canadian and while I am not happy with everything about our neighbours to the South, the US remains our greatest benefactor and our largest trading partner. Canadian prosperity, like many other nations, is very closely determined by our ties to the US.
Americans can go to Cuba, as long as they don’t spend money with the Cuban government. It’s a US Treasury Department restriction. The Cuban government does not prohibit Americans from coming there.
There are many stipulations for US citizens to travel to Cuba. Here is a website that goes into detail on what those are and unfortunately we don't fit any of the categories. www.afar.com/magazine/everything-americans-need-to-know-before-traveling-to-cuba#:~:text=The%20relationship%20between%20the%20United%20States
Since not working for the last year and a half (for some reason I can't convince my self to just admit I'm retired 🤔), as I start to wake up some days I think, what day is it? Sometimes being days off, but once I clear the fog from my brain I get it right (before getting out of bed). But this week has really thrown me off. I got up and about Tuesday and turned on some videos. But then I see a video that I would expect on Saturday. Made me wonder, is there an odd international dateline I'm not aware of? Since then, all seems normal. Then I get up today, Saturday, and there is a video usually released on Tuesdays. 🤔🤯 (See, someone pays attention) We "fall back" an hour tonight...B&C, did you guys fall back or forward a few days this week? 🤭 Did you find a wormhole? 😆 I know many like your travel videos, I personally like the podcasts more, depending on the destination...yay Tuesdays! 🤷♂😁 Thanks
Very observant, Barry!! 😁 This was a one-off situation and will get back to our regular programming this week. It would be interesting to do a poll on what our regular viewers like best. Podcast or destination. 🤔
@@BrianandCarrie Hmm, my first thought was destinations would win a poll. I think there's been more complaints of that when you've done podcasts (like the series from/after Budapest), but some of those weren't regular viewers as they didn't know the difference between the two. I like the podcasts as I consider them the mechanics of travel, the things that come into play and are useful most of the time. Plus, I have to over-analyze everything (Carrie would love my spreadsheets).😁 Destinations are interesting but cost can and will change, so I'll worry about that more when planning for each...helped by the podcasts? Plus, I'm less of a city person so I look more for off the beaten path or lesser known destinations. Thx again
Unfortunately, our time in Greece was short on material so we had to stack up podcast-style videos. We ended up with too many in a row. We knew it but couldn't do anything about it at the time. We are on track now!! 😁
When I was in Morocco, a Moroccan terrorist set off a bomb in the US. My hotel manager checked to make sure I was aware and suggested I stay inside for a few days. When I was in China, there was a demonstration as we were driving past the US embassy. My driver had me crouch under the seat so they couldn’t see a Westerner in the car. I’ve been in Turkey, France and other countries during strikes, demonstrations and a political coup where the government changed overnight. In every case, the locals were extremely considerate and protective. As a woman traveling alone, that means a lot.
@@BrianandCarrie I totally understand those kinds of situations. Been there, done that over the decades. That's when I sometimes pull out West African clothing and put it on although I'm not West African. But, since a lot of folks can't figure out that I'm American, I can disguise myself as other when in touchy situations like when my private driver and I were stopped on a highway in Ghana by armed gun patrol guys due to, according to him, unrest in Côte d'Ivoire. Have also traveled Morocco and Tunisia in touchy times back in the day. Greetings from Los Angeles
I think the news really hurts perceptions for both sides of any position both in and outside of any particular country. Sorry you guys get ugly comments; that's disappointing. You make fantastic content that has been very helpful for us! Cheers mates
Thank you! There will always be negative people that have nothing better to do than comment on RUclips channels. We can deal with it!! 🤣Thank you again, we appreciate the support.
Consider participating in your "local" politics at home too while you are away. I recently found out that Washington State has significant limits on allowable insurance policies for travelers that are not equivalent to other states. These decisions are controlled by the state insurance commissioner and attorney general.
Very much so, this is important! WA does have some restrictions, so some policies cannot be started while in the state. Fortunately, most travel style insurance plans can be started immediately as soon as you've traveled outside of the State. We simply start it on our first layover location.
I walked the Camino de Santiago in 2016, and people from around the world talked religion/politics/history/culture freely and with respect. It wasn’t a problem. However in 2022 in New England we were told to not discuss politics or mention the President at all. It was as bad as being in China or Russia.
Kudos to the final comments! I really wish we could respect our political disagreements. I am the eldest of eight brothers and sisters in an Irish Catholic family. I’m left of center and everyone else is conservative, centrist or even more left than me. Our holiday events have always been hot debates, but at the end of the day we hugged each other goodbye and said we couldn’t wait for the next holiday. I mourn the fact that so many friends and families now are breaking apart over politics. And to add to being mindful of country politics, my spouse and I are knowledgeable about those countries that criminalize gay people, and in some cases put homosexuals to death. There are many places, for safety, we need to avoid. This doesn’t mean a country has to be gay welcoming in order for us to visit. We do believe that nothing will change if we avoid them. For instance, although Serbia doesn’t have anti gay laws on the books, it has a reputation for being homophobic. We went and had a wonderful time and met many lovely people, a number of whom said they never met a same sex married couple. It was one of the highlights of our slow travel adventure.
Thank you, Jim, for sharing this with the community. This is a good example of people having respect for one another no matter what their differences may be. People before politics! ❤️😊
Great job! Very informative and not an easy topic to discuss. There will always be political differences that make it challenging to travel, but staying informed and staying out of controversial discussions helps so much. But it is inevitable that people will bring up politics, and a polite discussion can be interesting and educational. I'm always amazed at how much people around the world know about US politics!
Also years ago when some countries took a population census they wanted everybody to stay home no cabs or stores open for that day. You don't want to be in countries where most of the population boycotts the elections.
As a Cdn , thanks for the compliment and maybe after tomorrow, you may very well choose to join us lol. What you’ve conveyed is absolutely true, as diplomacy and kindness goes a long way when in a foreign country. Funny enough though as Canadians, we tend to experience the most frequent shots during travelling in the great U.S.A. given the perception that we support a socialist gov’t and way of life. I’m never quite sure of the best response other than to acknowledge our health care if and when we receive services, at least won’t bankrupt us. Safe travels and beware of that high proof tequila!
We just completed a three week road trip in Türkiye, and not even once received any negativity due to being from the US. It was also really refreshing to observe that Türkiye is completely supportive of humanity and anti-genocide. Many shops displayed Palestinian flags, which I found so refreshing compared to supporting war and mass murder like the US and Israel are doing. I like the video because I think that many people don’t take these aspects into consideration before travelling, and then they get surprised or offended on the rare occasions when someone says something negative about Americans.
Nicely nuanced discussion of what, especially in the US, can be a contentious issue. Having lived overseas ourselves we have encountered much of the above. One note, neither party is announcing any serious plans to dismantle the ACA (the Democrats have asserted that Trump will do it but it simply isn't true and he's refuted it at every turn).
I have been living outside the US for many years and my golden rule is to just not respond to anyone who begins a sentence with "Americans think.../Americans want.../Americans don't understand..., etc." I purposefully stare blankly at them until they think about why I might be staring blankly at them. As if 330+ million people might be the same. Lol.
More valuable content. Travellers should ensure that they do their research, as well as being mindful of political issues, elections and military actions. Sadly the US political situation is creating more uncertainty globally than it likely should be. Cheers to both. Continue to enjoy Mexico. Oh and Brian - NEITHER of you is lazy or ignorant. You are very well balanced and ensure that you are respectful for all peoples, wherever they are. That comes with travelling the world and seeing how other people live.
Brian and Carrie: It's not a WAR in Israel; it's a genocide being commiiited against the Palestinians, the Lebanese ...you guys are good human being and it's important to say things as they are..
It ceartainly as for myself affects where I travel. I would very much like to go back to Ukraine. But because of that war there are countries I won’t even transit through.
Great discussion. The politics of your home country absolutely follows you. When I was at the Australian Open in Melbourne in 2019 the audience members sitting around me asked lots of questions for our thoughts about the president at the time. I’ve found people are usually curious rather than controversial in their discussions and questions.
I would like to see the United States create a National Soccer/Futball team so we Americans have something in common with the rest of the Global community to talk about other than government/politics. If you've never watched Argentinans, or any Latin American country for that matter, during a soccer/futball match, then you have missed an amazing unifying event! ⚽️
Not only does the USA have a national football/ soccer team, but will also host the FIFA world championship in 2026, along with its neighbors to the North and South. Yes, it will be an event hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico!
We are often asked about our politics when we travel. In Lithuania we had a great taxi driver that discussed her politics. We learned a lot. In Latvia, we had a driver that had a Russian based opinion. I agree that Canadians are always accepted. But I am fascinated with the Europeans eagerness to discuss all politics.
I experienced the same. The uber and taxi drivers I encountered in Istanbul, Athens and Dublin were so eager to talk about their own politics. I found it fascinating and a nice break from discussing US politics.
Hi guys, I hope all is well with both of you. I am so disappointed with the election result that I am happy I live in Spain. I used to work for Trump in New Jersey and had to go to mandatory unpaid meetings. All the man cares about is himself. The reason he got elected is because of the economy. The cost of living in the USA is increadebly high, and wages have not kept up. I am sure you noticed this the last time you were home. I am very much looking forward to the wine (Malbec) videos from Mendoza and your opinion on Argentinian steaks.
Americans saying they’re Canadians… I was afraid you’d say that 😂 As foreigners knows the trick, you can say you’re from Quebec… this still works ! Now, politically… you probably noticed, but the whole world is moving on the right side of the spectrum… or at least we are seeing polarization of debates all over. That’s the social network effect… lots of angriness from both sides, so let’s stay away from getting into politics these days, anywhere.
I'm an annoying Canadian 😂 You handled this delicate subject brilliantly, it's always a joy to watch you. Cheers from Cambodia, wishing you happy and safe travels!
We’ve encountered some animosity here in mexico due to the politics surrounding the relationship with the U.S. and Mexico. We know we do not support the views the govt puts out so we just let it roll and try not to get involved in discussions regarding that. It has changed the climate a bit with how Mexico views Americans sadly. We aren’t all the same and that is one reason we travel full time.
Understandable. We have not had any experiences while here but know that it could happen. We do our best to avoid the conversation. Thank you for watching and commenting, Cassidee! 😊❤️
As a Canadian I agree 100% with your comments. Around the world my husband and I are asked if we're American and when we said "no, Canadian" the person apologized for suggesting we were. I will say, however, we travelled through the US and found lovely, polite people everywhere. Your US politics is certainly intriguing-let's hope things go well🙏
We are so glad you had good experiences in the US, it sounds like you had a wonderful trip! Most Americans are very welcoming, it's the few that make the rest look bad! 😉
Canadians heavily rely on military protection from the American taxpayers. Then you try to construct a silly facade of pretending you’re peaceful. Even the protection of your airspace is based in Colorado. Hahaha
Hi Brian & Carrie, My husband and I have been traveling for many years....we are not trump supporters for many reasons. When it came out he won my heart sank. The tears are gone (mostly). Just mostly anger is left. We have plans to leave in January and be gone for 6 months. I have much apprehension in going most places now. I feel we will be judged and there will be much anger towards us as Americans. Don't know what to do now I just have a lot of anger towards anyone who I know voted for him.... because my husband and i love to travel.... I don't think travel will ever be the same. Hope I am wrong. Sorry just venting. 😑 Where would you guys not visit at this point? Just wondering.
I moved my kids to Abu Dhabi in 2000. Just after that the second intifada happened and there were protests all over the city and even on the university campus where I worked. After burning US flags and chanting "down, down, USA," my students (all Arab women) would come up to my office and hug me saying, "We love you Dr. Kate. We just hate your government." Many countries have populations who can separate out what governments do from the real people:). Of course when my kids were traveling by themselves in taxis at that time (so very safe even for 12 year olds), I had them just say they were Canadian 🤣
We haven't had any problems being Americans. Most people treat each other with respect and understand people are not their government. But it would be easy to say you are Canadian if you felt threatened. 😁🍁
They’ve been doing that for years. Will be a huge sale on 🇨🇦 backpack flags if Trump is elected. It’s sad that you have to lie about where you’re from. Though we certainly have our fair share of political issues, I’m very proud to say I’m Canadian! 🇨🇦
@@anotherabeer4341Except wars did happen under Trump. Have you heard of Syria and Afghanistan?

You can’t paint everyone with the same brush. I wonder if the person who call you lazy and ignorant would do that to your face. We are all very brave behind a keyboard. I am from Spain and due to the stupid people with the water guns, now people think I don’t want people to visit Spain and that could not be further from the truth. Safe travels
People are very different face to face. I can't imagine leaving a nasty comment on someone's social media page. I just move along. Thank you for watching and supporting the channel. We very much appreciate you! ❤️
Some speculation about the effects of POSSIBLE (not necessarily likely) outcomes here in the US: * if the next Administration starts closing the border with Mexico and does mass arrests/deportations, treatment of US expats in Mexico and other Latino nations might get a little...frosty. Don't assume that the warm treatment you currently get in your host country can't change rapidly...especially if you're suddenly joined by large numbers of your fellow countrymen. * it's possible that your state of residence in the US could turn hostile to its expats...civil asset forfeiture, freezing your bank accounts and investments, etc. You could be required to return to your state of residence for some reason, and face political consequences OR have to forfeit your citizenship or residency in that state. * your state of residence could SECEDE from the US, and suddenly your US passport might be very...tentative...what nation are you now a citizen of? Are your bank accounts and investments still available, or are they now worthless anywhere outside of your "new homeland"? Are you now stateless, and if so how does that affect your ability to physically remain in other countries? Etc. The reality is, we're in uncharted waters and though nobody should panic, it would be foolish to assume that everything will be okay and people in your host country will be supportive and treat you well.
Hi guys, great video and a lot of common sense and good advice. I am looking forward to you being in Argentina, and I hope you will visit the wine areas around Mendoza. I can't wait for the US elections to be over. America is so divided and needs to be a much more inclusive and friendly nation. End the hate speech!!!
On November 16 I'll be traveling to the free and sovereign country of Taiwan. Needless to say I am praying for a Trump victory so that China does not try invading the country.
Feel ya. In my experience Americans who travel are a whole lot more progressive than average - so I can imagine it can be hard if people don’t realise that. BTW that seemed like a podcast episode and the Tuesday/Wednesday one was more of a normal youtube post. Are you changing days on us or just mixing it up for shits and giggles?
Are you guys billionaires or something I just can’t follow how you’re everywhere and anywhere whenever you feel like being somewhere else! Explain that
We have explained that many times. We have videos all about who we are, where we are from, and what we spend. Each month, we have cost of living videos and year-end costs at the end of the year! 😁 Enjoy!
The nice thing about Romania is that the only safety alert I get is when there is a bear in the area. 😂 As an American, I get asked a lot of questions about American politics. Even with Romania being a more conservative country, they still have their liberal news media BUT the people are so used to the news being propaganda, that they take everything with a grain of salt. America still holds the crown of being a country where dreams can be achieved - and yes, dreams can still be achieved, but not like how it used to be. I have traded in my American dream for the Romanian dream. Even with such a liberal news media in Romania, they still report on things happening in America that our own news media doesn't report. I can't tell you how many time over the past 3 years my mother-in-law will call us and ask us about something that we had no clue was happening. Then we dig for it and eventually find it. But, overall, politics has not had any bearing on my travels in Romania but it has sure opened up some great conversations! If anything, being an American in Romania has opened more doors for me.
You are so wrong about Mexico. The people are wonderful, but there are states that the cartels are having a war. Nobody can go to Mazatlán right now. Driving through the State of Sonora is a crap shoot, as well as other states. I don't know where you got your info from but you are putting people in danger by saying Mexico is safe. Do the RESEARCH!!!
We said in the video that there are places that you shouldn't travel to. You must have skipped that part. We are currently in Mexico and have been for almost three months, so our research is actually boots on the ground. Along with the STEP website, we feel that our research is very good. We are having a wonderful time in Mexico. 😊
Please stop fear mongering. I know many people that have relocated and retired to different cities in mexico, and they love it. I'll be making a trip there myself in April. I was on a cruise ship that still stopped in Ensanada, shortly after those 3 men were robbed and killed. And cruise ships are still making stops in Matzalan. The potential for violent crime is everywhere. It certainly is true in many US cities, and that doesn't keep people from coming here. It's important that people exercise diligence, and do their research before visiting any foreign location. But it's distressing to see Mexico and other latin american countries being so stereotyped.
This is why I rather get my information from those who are currently there for awhile, or living there. I don’t know those who aren’t there, or how they actually feel about a specific place personally to trust them. Mexico can’t be the #1 or #2 of the most place retirees move to if it’s that bad all over. Otherwise I might as well get it from mainstream news.
Re Cuba- right now having some issues, bring your own lights. However I believe Americans can go there. See Kara and Nate who did a whole trip there. They had no problem coming back into the US. As you note better to check current US policies. It’s North Korea you really should stay out of. Think I have commented before , but many Americans wear the Canadian flag. Yes, we get taken for Americans, many have trouble hearing the different accent, which seams obvious to me, but once we identify as Canadian, the attitude changes. It makes me happy and sad at the same time. There is the odd decent American😂.
Yes, there are ways to go but we don't fit any of the criteria. www.afar.com/magazine/everything-americans-need-to-know-before-traveling-to-cuba#:~:text=The%20relationship%20between%20the%20United%20States
I had to laugh about your Canadian comments, about how you might be Canadian. I was in Spain, going to school in 1986 which was a VERY eventful year. Chernobyl, Qadaffi, Challenger, etc... well they were also voting on NATO (OTAN in spanish) and there were demonstrations with American flags being burned in the street. Our university advisor called all the Americans in and told us to tell everyone we were Canadian if asked. No joke. I had ZERO issues doing this, being all of 19 yrs old and an ocean away from home. In fact we plan on slow traveling after retirement starting in 2026 and not only am I "not going to have any opinion" on political questions but I may even claim to be Canadian. It will be a relief to get away from what's going on here right now - all the divisiveness. My hubby is in process of getting Italian citizenship by descent and then I'll get a spousal citizenship... so we'll see how it goes after that. It might be a whole lot easier to travel as an Italian citizen depending on the global politics at that time. TY for your videos - you inspire me and give so much great info that helps me to prepare for OUR time!
We are proud Americans and don't shy away from it, but there have been times that we considered saying "Canadian". 😁 Your time will come soon!! Thank you for watching and commenting!! ❤️
everywhere we find good and bad people. Just be careful where you go, times. Personally I would avoid Muslim places. Of course, every rule has an exception. You can never be too careful. better be safe than sorry
Well here is my example. When Obama was POTUS I was in Asia and was treated great. The conOLD "won" in 2016 and I spent those trips for 4 years to the SAME countries being largely IGNORED or given the "side eye" in ALL of the same places/shops/etc. Then in 2023 finally got to back... treated a little bit better... more like I was pre-2016.
You handled this potentially controversial subject with great diplomacy. Well done.
Thank you!! 😉
Thank you, Sandi! ❤️
I love your practical advice, I subscribe to many travel channels, but I always go back to your channel for great travel advice for Americans. Thank you!
We are glad to be a resource, thank you!! 😁 We appreciate that you keep coming back!! 😁
When someone asks me what I think of Trump, I just say “Well… I’m here in your country, am I not?” Usually gets a chuckle.
It’s crazy to think of how different the world could be! We are hoping for the best. ❤️
I enjoy your videos so much, the two of you are excellent in presenting new and different places.
Thank you for watching! We appreciate you, Joe!! 😁
When traveling, it’s a safe bet if someone asks about your thoughts on politics, just deflect the question and ask them what they think. More often than not, they’re asking because they have strong opinions and you can entertain their perspective without ruffling any feathers.
That is a great point and perfect strategy!! Thank you!! ❤️
Yes, this is a good strategy and it does work!
Finally, we have other full time travelers covering this topic at least once! This is the kind of thinking we need
Thank you!! 😁🍻
Politics were part of the reasons why my wife and I started full-time slow travel back in April.
It's refreshing to not have to deal with that drama all the time now, with how bad it's been in the U.S. for a while now.
It is really sad to see! Fortunately, we can turn it off most of the time.
@BrianandCarrie True enough. We haven't watched TV in months, but as you know, when you have to constantly be on RUclips, you're going to run into it...😆
We run into it and do our best to look the other way!!
It’s eye-opening to see how politics can shape travel trends, influence destination choices, and even impact travelers' experiences. Thank you for diving into this complex issue!
Thank you!! ❤️
@@BrianandCarrie Thank you so much! I truly loved it and can’t wait to see more! 😊✨
( I learned that many australians have very strong opinions about Trump!.)
But overall, I had almost nothing but positive experiences this year in Antigua, Panama, Rome,, Turkey, Greece, Dublin, Albania, and London.
The only incident that we believe was race related was being the only ones in a group stopped and slightly interrogated, when deplaning to a German airport.
But I very much have enjoyed this channel, and appreciate that you were willing to tackle a difficult topic.
Very interesting point of view, Leslie. Most of us can't relate so thank you for sharing your experiences with the channel! ❤️❤️
"People are not their government", Love it!! Thank you for adding this to the channel!!
Excellent video! I have been curious about this and really appreciate your perspective and diplomacy! Thank you so much!❤
AND you answered a lot of my questions. I learned a lot!
We are glad to know that it was useful, Lydia! Thank you!! ❤️
Very well done and timely vlog
Thank you for the comments, Ellen, and safe travels!! ❤️
Everyone likes Canadians!! 😁 Thank you for watching, Diana!! ❤️
@@BrianandCarrie It’s more like Canada is an inconsequential nation so nobody thinks of them or has an opinion. It’s hardly a matter of “liking them”.
That is funny! Everyone loves Canadians!! 😁

Thank you, Peter!!
And now Thailand is 60 days for US, and allows a 30 day extension.
Good job covering a touchy subject! Appreciate it!! 😊
Thank you for watching, Devin! 😊
Many nomads can now say goodbye to ACA subsidies and protections for pre-existing conditions. Woe to those folks not already retired and taking Social Security.
That’s a great point and something we’re watching closely.
Cheers!🍺🏖
We are so glad you found the video useful, and hope your son has a wonderful trip! What an amazing opportunity for an 18 year old!! Cheers! 😁🍻
You can go to Cuba. My mom just went to a Jazz festivale there and had a great time.
Here are the 12 criteria to enter.

Great video. Love you guys. We are planning to slow travel starting January 2026
Thank you! We're excited to hear about your plans! Just over a year away!! It will go by fast!! 😊
I'm so envious! Enjoy and be safe!
I’m heading to cams and qro in a month nice to hear you feel safe though I expected that to be the case as I picked those areas with this factor in mind.
It does feel safe, John! Thank you for watching and happy travels! 😁
Fantastic work on a very difficult subject to address!
Thank you, we appreciate the support!! 😊
Well said, Frederic. Thank you!!
I sometimes think twice about admitting we’re British! 😅 Love following your travels, we aim to be doing the same (minus selling our house) in a few years 😊
We have met a few Brits along the way and have had a great time every time!! 😁
@ Thanks, we’re not that bad really 😉
Neither are we!! The Aussies are pretty cool too. 😊🍻
Great advice - "People before Politics"!
Thank you, Claire! ❤️
You handled this topic well
Another effect of world politics that I have observed is other travelers. Here in Thailand the war in the Ukraine resulted in a lot of Russians coming to Thailand, particularly Phuket, and they ended up raising visa agent prices and local rents.
We were there 2 years ago and noticed the same thing.
Very interesting Thanks
You are welcome! We are glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching!! 😊
What a beautiful world we would have ❤
You are so right. Can't we all just get along!? ❤️
Great thoughtful video. Super cool short Brian. JP Porto
Thank you, JP! 😁
@ I meant Shirt! 😀
HA!! I read it as shirt. I didn't even notice!! 🤣
Well, said! Thank you for adding to the channel!! 😊

🤔🤯 (See, someone pays attention)
We "fall back" an hour tonight...B&C, did you guys fall back or forward a few days this week?
Always when they find I am from the USA, they ask what I think of Trump. I answer.
That does mean a lot. Thank you for sharing your experiences, Linda. We always appreciate your comments. 😊
It is sad that we have become so divided. 😔
@ in the UK we have our own Taboo subject ‘Brexit’ ….
We agree! It’s amazing how well-informed people are, especially on our politics. 😂 Thank you, Jim!
Ah, the visa for Turkey ... Diligent traveler than I am, I had it on my phone a month before I no longer needed it. *sighs
At least you knew at one point you needed one! Being diligent is never a bad thing!! 😁
You can go to Cuba. Get a flight from Mexico or any other Central or South American country.
It's not that simple. Here is a link.
www.afar.com/magazine/everything-americans-need-to-know-before-traveling-to-cuba
This is the part that worries me most about international travel.
Just remember that most people in the world don't care about politics and are very kind. Avoiding hot spots is easy! 😁
Thank you for watching!
Lol.
We are pretty good now at deflecting the conversation in a different direction. And yes, having so many people on the same page is difficult!! 🤔
Agreed, Robert! Thank you! 😊 🍁
Brian and Carrie: It's not a WAR in Israel; it's a genocide being commiiited against the Palestinians, the Lebanese ...you guys are good human being and it's important to say things as they are..
Thank you, Gina.
We have created a national soccer team; we just suck at it. 🤣
We most always get the question. Especially after we build some kind of a relationship. We are always eager not to discuss politics! 😁
I experienced the same. The uber and taxi drivers I encountered in Istanbul, Athens and Dublin were so eager to talk about their own politics. I found it fascinating and a nice break from discussing US politics.
We found the same thing in Dublin. We encouraged the conversation because it wasn't focused on the US! 🤣
Americans saying they’re Canadians… I was afraid you’d say that 😂
As foreigners knows the trick, you can say you’re from Quebec… this still works !
Now, politically… you probably noticed, but the whole world is moving on the right side of the spectrum… or at least we are seeing polarization of debates all over. That’s the social network effect… lots of angriness from both sides, so let’s stay away from getting into politics these days, anywhere.
Speaking of politics, is there anyway you can talk RUclips into not interrupting your videos with political ads? 😁
We wish!
I'm an annoying Canadian 😂 You handled this delicate subject brilliantly, it's always a joy to watch you. Cheers from Cambodia, wishing you happy and safe travels!
We appreciate that! Thank you and safe travels!
I'll be happy when this is all over next week
I'll be happy when it's all over, hopefully by next week. 😁
It will never be over.
We can only hope that it will be. ❤️
I had the same experience while in Italy this year. People apologized for mistaking me for an American. Praying things will settle when 💙 is elected!
Our country is embarrassing with what is going on right now. I have such anxiety over the outcome. 😑
Embarrassing is unfortunately the correct word. 😔
Canadians heavily rely on military protection from the American taxpayers. Then you try to construct a silly facade of pretending you’re peaceful. Even the protection of your airspace is based in Colorado. Hahaha
I mean, if there is a civil war in a country, you probably don't want to travel there. So what kind of question is this?
A rhetorical one.
Haha - I used to always say I was Canadian now it's 50/50 on whether I say that bc I met someone who said what part of Canada and I got caught 😂
Don't get caught in a lie!! 🤣
Reading the audience I have responded “I’m Canadian” when traveling in Europe! 😅
🥇🥇🥇
Where would you guys not visit at this point? Just wondering.
We tell people who ask that we are traveling the world and that we don't get caught up in the division in the US.
The reason why Mexico is considered a dangerous place is because Hollywood uses a yellow filter in movies set in Mexico.
And the news...
As an American, just always claim you are Canadian.
Exactly! 🤣
They’ve been doing that for years. Will be a huge sale on 🇨🇦 backpack flags if Trump is elected. It’s sad that you have to lie about where you’re from. Though we certainly have our fair share of political issues, I’m very proud to say I’m Canadian! 🇨🇦
Thats funny!! Thats why we love our friends from the north!! 🤣
@@Smucko1No wars happened under Trump. That bothers you?
I'll wear my Canadian baseball cap while in Spain 😘
Some speculation about the effects of POSSIBLE (not necessarily likely) outcomes here in the US:
* if the next Administration starts closing the border with Mexico and does mass arrests/deportations, treatment of US expats in Mexico and other Latino nations might get a little...frosty.
Thank you for watching and adding to the conversation!!! 😊
We will absolutely be doing wine tours in Mendoza! The elections can't be over soon enough. Time to heal. ❤️
On November 16 I'll be traveling to the free and sovereign country of Taiwan. Needless to say I am praying for a Trump victory so that China does not try invading the country.
Thank you for watching.
Yes, we did! That is just a one off!! It won't happen again. 😁
The people are more aware because Romania is a former communist country. They lived it.
Probably safer than a lot of the U.S.
Well said, Leslie!! 😊
Obviously you have no clue. I recommend you stick to drinking beer 🍻.
I mean, it's never a bad option.
Cheers! 🍻
Americans can go for education/study purposes. My oldest daughter went there on a one week study abroad while at university. Just an FYI.😊
Yes, there are ways to go but we don't fit any of the criteria.

Tattoo a fake Canadian Flag on your arm. 😂
I do find as a Canadian that people do change the way they speak to me once they know I'm Canadian.
🤣
Well here is my example. When Obama was POTUS I was in Asia and was treated great. The conOLD "won" in 2016 and I spent those trips for 4 years to the SAME countries being largely IGNORED or given the "side eye" in ALL of the same places/shops/etc. Then in 2023 finally got to back... treated a little bit better... more like I was pre-2016.
We have experienced the side eye a few times as well!!
