YES I am well aware of alllllllllllllll the ways this could have gone worse and while I appreciate y'all care about us fear mongering is not helpful for anyone. I get to enjoy the life I do and make the memories I have because I prepare the best I can and then set out without letting fear hold me back in life. The best way to learn is to go out and give it try.
I was paddling on lake weir here in Florida at sunset. Coming home after dark, I paddled right into a huge grass island area that for sure contains alligators and water moccasins . Man talk about veclempt , plus I build docks so I've had many wildlife experiences and I know exactly what you mean . It activates what I guess they call your lizard brain and it's impossible to relax .

It's called rafting, and they group up to do this when they want to sleep without coming onto a beach, and to regulate their body temperatures.

When u can afford it....drysuit and booties.. ....if u get caught in rain or on a wet paddle excursion .even rain pants are a great insulator and barrier.. mec may have used drysuit and waterproof gloves . Also Booties great when launching board. It's Spring.. sea lion season in March feeding on herring around Gulf Islands and shadowed by seals getting what they do not. Pack hot packs for emergency use for u and Frank. Not environmentally great cause 1x use but.. frank is the best.🐕🐶🐾🐾

So far I have only packed lunch and my watercolour paints on my iSUP. An overnight trip is cool 👍. Frank certainly enjoys his time on the sea. I agree that sealions would scare me too, they are so big. Keep on adventuring, it is a privilege that you share your experiences with us.

How do sea lions regulate their body temperature?
Sea lions have the ability to regulate their own body temperature. They can often be seen floating with one flipper out of the water. The reason for this is because the capillaries are close to the surface of the skin and can catch sunbeams to warm their body. To cool down, they put their flipper into the water then raise it back up into the air which cools them off during the evaporation process. This process is called thermoregulation.

I really enjoyed so much of this video. Honestly, I would have been afraid of the seals too so I was afraid with you. I really loved the picture of the flower between Frank's feet. I have slept on a pile of clothes before, I'm sure I would have done as you did with the pile and slept well lol. Frank is so awesome and so loyal to you. He always cracks me up that he wants the small logs instead of the simpler to carry sticks and then watching him drag him for you to throw, lol I love it. That tree was super pretty. The seals are making sure you are okay; if they didn't like you, they'd leave you alone. This is my happiest tidetoalpine vd. Thank you and proud for you and Frank. I recommend a glass chain-loop so you don't loose your glasses.
I've just enjoyed your paddling video and decided I should contribute my thoughts on the danger of seals and sealions. Decades of experience have convinced me that neither seals nor sealions are of much concern. I lived on a sailboat for 5 years (with my dog) in the San Juan and Gulf Islands and so rowed around a lot in a small boat. After moving ashore one of my main pass times was kayaking, (again, with my dog) sometimes in throngs of sealions around the times of the herring spawning. The only concern I had was that one might surface right under my kayak but the only time that came close to happening was when one surfaced a couple of feet away and might even have touched my paddle. That startled it enough that it did such a panic dive that it splashed water into the kayak. Even when they do surface they seem to do so under control but I have seen them break the surface forcefully when they have a salmon in their mouths and are shaking it violently into bite sized pieces. While sealions have never shown any interest I have had seals follow my kayak out of nothing more than curiosity, I'm sure, upon which I sometimes stop paddling to see how close they would come. The only time one came close enough to touch my elbow with its nose was on a very calm night. It was quite a small seal, probably a young one, and I was sorry my dog frightened it off in dipping her head down toward it also curious. At night I have noticed that sometimes a seal would pass a few feet under the kayak, noticeable by the luminescent trail it left. Yes, there are reports of people being bitten by sealions and even by seals but I believe that is even more rare than people being being attacked by their own pet dog or cat. There are scuba divers who go out of their way to dive among sealions.
In another of your videos, the one involving a trip to Vancouver for health care, you mentioned needing someplace to stay in Nanaimo to get the ferry in the morning. You probably meant a place to park and if that need should arise again my driveway would be available. As a lifelong cyclist (yes, with my dog) I have sometimes offered accommodation to touring cyclists and would quite gladly extend that to, shall we say, permanent 'vanists'. Although my house is probably not much warmer than your van there is an upstairs bedroom with an ocean view you and Frank might enjoy. And by the way, when I went to subscribe this morning I found I had already done so then remembered watching you fight your way out that snowy trap some months so ago. Also, I think you made a wise and well thought out decision to get the paddle board as a way to still adventure with Frank and as a new way for you to exercise/ sport instead of the thru hiking you use to do. Maybe this is a good thing for your aging body as well as for Frank’s.
I’m constantly laughing at myself in the ways I have to adapt my methods of hiking and outdoor work to adjust to the “now” me.
And I have just as much fun as I did 30 years ago. Shoot, you’re inspiring me to the possibility of getting back to a water sport.

Seals are the dogs of the sea 🌊 they are super curious which is why they will come close when your out there 😊 no need to be scared

Awesome adventure you and Frank are the best , when you paddle try to go more straight down into the water it will give you longer stokes and push you more . Someone told me this and it made paddling so much easier

ocean paddling is no joke - for anyone interested, I would highly suggest taking a course before going! you need to look at charts, tides, weather, currents, etc etc when planning your trip. Totally respect not letting fear stop you, but don't go running into these things blind! Also, loved the video - cannot believe you saw a whole sea lion!

What an adventure, indeed! Years ago we did a little kayak tour around the Broken group islands and there were tons of seals and sea lions. They didn't come too close but boy, were they loud. And much bigger than they seem from afar! So happy to see Frank living his best life - and you, too, of course!

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space. I wish I had had the courage to do what you do when I was younger but living vicariously through your adventures is inspiring to say the least.
