  • Wow. What a morning this was!
(Be sure to have your speakers on so you can hear the cubs cry, and the Momma chuffing her way up the tree.)
This video was captured in early spring, mid-April 2018, that time of year when our trail cameras start capturing footage of newborn wildlife. On this particular morning, Momma bear and her two cubs came a bit too close to our home. Our dog, Buki alerted us to their presence. We dutifully got out the airhorns, and Buki kept up the barking, while our new puppy learned to follow suit. But rather then sending the bears away, our racket just sent the cubs high up in a nearby tree. Momma tried to flee at first, but she couldn't leave her babes behind, so she ended up climbing the tree to join them.
It was an uncharacteristically glorious day for this time of year. After we stopped trying to scare the bears away, this family just settled in the crook of our oak tree and napped in the warm morning sun. The cubs took turns nursing, and when they finished, Momma bear created a protective barrier on either side of her cubs so they could sleep together in the cradle of her arms.
This was a wondrous thing to witness, but we understand how serious this kind of proximity to bears can be. Just listen to that huffing and chuffing of Momma Bear as she climbs up the tree! You don't want to mess with Momma bear.
    Thanks so much for watching!
(We hope you enjoy this as much as we did.)

OMG! How cute are they?!?!? It's amazing how fast they can scale a tree! Now I see why you wouldn't want to climb a tree to get away from one that's angrily pursuing you now! It would be like climbing up onto their dinner table, lol.

Most folks in this region love the bears, and for that I’m grateful.
We’re lucky to have had several other bear families call this mountain home since I posted this video. The family from last year and this spring is still my favorite, thus far. Mama Bear and The Darryls were so incredibly playful and adventurous.
I’ve begun to offer the bears “enrichment” toys in areas that are very far from our home. The bears have really come to enjoy those toys. (No food, though! I never feed the bears. - Unfortunately, easy access to birdseed, pet-food, and trash is one of the reasons why so many bears are living closer to town now. There are lots of sightings, which are always a thrill. Unfortunately, the prevalence of all that human-sourced food doesn’t always work out so well, though - whether for humans or for the bears. :-( )
Here are a few playlist links that show some of the bears enjoying their time on the mountain here:

Well - that’s the downside to having all these trail cameras around. I have to skip past all the footage of me, which is terribly annoying and humbling. That is why I’m sticking with critter cams, rather than insisting on live-streaming or recording music videos with my sweetie. I detest being on the other side of any camera. ;-)

      bsmartcoaching - HAHA!
I get it. I was a little unnerved by their presence at first. But it feels more like an honor to us when they swing by close enough that we get to see them. (Although this was much too close to the house. We tried to scare them away for the bears’ sake. It’s best that they not become accustomed to being near houses. We should have known our sounds and yelling would have sent the bear cubs up the tree! Sometimes bear cubs will be up a tree for up to 24 hours until the Momma Bear deems it safe for them to come back down again. I think Momma Bear knew her cubs were safe in this instance. But they were being careful. Besides, they enjoyed that long sultry springtime nap in the tree.
It’s still always a thrill, partly because it could be dangerous, but mostly the bears just don’t want to be bothered. They don’t want to interact with humans.
I’m just so glad we get to see them on occasion! Usually I have to wait until I’ve switched out the SD cards on my trail cameras to witness them.

I absolutely love love love me some bears!!! Watching a mama bear with her Cubs has got to be one of the most precious things ever!! Oh how I envy the environment you get to live in. I'd be out there every day with food and water for all of the critters... too many people are so ignorant to these animals and just want to start shooting.. Yes they are very large animals and can do an awful lot of damage and probably death, but it's our own faults that they are even in our yards and out in the open.. Humans continually destroy their homes and their food and water sources.. humans feel the need to just keep depleting our forests and nature in general.. and for what? More buildings, houses, malls, stores, and alot of crap we dont even need.. how about just using what's already built and leave what's left of nature to the critters...sorry about the rambling.. Animals and nature is a very touchy subject for me.. Thank you for sharing this beauty with us.. It gave my heart the biggest smile❤❤❤

We are so lucky to be living here amidst all this wonderful, wild beauty!
Unfortunately, we cannot feed the bears or the other wildlife. (Although we do feed the birds in the winter.)
It’s just not safe or advisable to get bears habituated to a human’s food sources. There is a reason why this local saying is so often repeated:
“A fed bear is a dead bear.”
Once bears become accustomed to getting food from humans, they can become too demanding and dangerous as a result. (They cause a lot of property damage, and can even cause personal injury.)
Once they are officially deemed “nuisance bears”, they are either removed from the area altogether, or, worse, and, unfortunately more often, they end up having to be euthanized.
It’s a tragic ending for too many bears, especially when their deaths are unnecessary, and are caused by the actions of otherwise well-meaning (and sometimes selfish) humans.
I AM out there every day, though! Whether that is for gardening, or walking trails, or doing trail camera maintenance.
Thankfully there are many natural water sources not far from us, just in the valleys below our ridge. I still dream about building a water-source for the wildlife up here. Our property seems to be a favorite pass-through, and I bet all the critters would appreciate having another water-source to enjoy en route. At least providing water would not lead to “nuisance bears.” Just happier, hydrated bears. :-)

Oh! I know! So very tempting. However, it’s best not to let bears get too accustomed to being near any human or human’s home. It’s dangerous not only for the human inhabitants or pets, but for the bears themselves. There is a saying around here that holds true - “A fed bear is a dead bear.” When bears become nuisance bears and endanger neighborhoods and human lives, they end up having to be relocated or euthanized. Typically they are euthanized, which is an end result we want to afford. - Thankfully, we have a veritable playground for the bears on the rest of our property and in the wild lands beyond. The bears love our hiking trails almost as much we do. They also love our hammock! Hope you saw those videos, too. I’ve only posted 4 of the hammock videos but will be posting more. Hopefully the bears will rediscover the hammock this year. We shall see. THe hammock is far enough from our house, their presence there is a little less worrisome.

I’ve been loving our new bear family from 2020. We anxiously awaited spring, hoping that they survived the winter, and I just saw them again on Sunday night. The day after I discovered a recently vacated bear den a few steps away from where I captured footage of them. Might have been their den! It has been such a joy. Definitely reason for caution, too - we are careful. But I can’t help but feel joy when I see them. They are so magnificent and goofy, all at the same time. (Not to mention destructive. Bears around here don’t really have predators, other than humans. The Mama Bears around here know they are safe around most of the houses on our mountain, so folks see them fairly frequently - just so long as they don’t visit the neighbors on the backside, as they are well-armed and may be bear-hunters. I don’t know. I don’t want to know bc there’s nothing I can do about the bears territory.
However, Mama Bears *do* have to worry about adult male bears being predators. Adult male bears are known to kill young cubs to force the Mama Bears into estrus, so they will breed again.
Typically when I’ve seen Mama Bear concerned, it is because a male bear has been in the vicinity. The males let Mama Bears know they are around by stomping (leaving scent with the glands in their paws) and marking foliage and trees with their fur. So, that’s probably why Mama looked concerned. Also, our dogs were barking during their visit. We were finally able to calm the dogs down, once we realized we could not shoo the bears away from our home. While I absolutely *love* getting to see bears, it’s best if they don’t get too comfortable near houses. Otherwise, they may come too close to the wrong house, and a hunter may kill them. When bears are too habituated to humans, a game warden may come to take them away, or euthanize them. That happens a little too often, and it’s heartbreaking. :-(

It must have been fun to watch them during all that time! Thanks for another great video! 🐻😊🐻

😁 I think the bears have been walking this ridge since long before people ever built a house up here. Just because there's a house along their path now, doesn't mean they feel like changing course.🤣
I didn't realize just how often bears swung by our lower patio until I put a couple cameras down there. Many bears have learned to associate humans' houses with great, easy food. We don't feed the birds during the warmer months, though - when bears are out of the den and active. I suppose the bears leave here somewhat disappointed. However, our ridge top is still full of yummy treats that are more typical fare for bears -- berries, grubs, etc. They don't go hungry up here.

Junyulie Fukushima-Crowell - Don’t worry. They have plenty to eat.
We can’t feed the bears here. It’s too dangerous for them!
There is a saying around here, “A fed bear is a dead bear.”
When bears get used to easy access to high-nutrient food from humans, they can become demanding and dangerous. Unfortunately that’s when they become deemed “Nuisance Bears” and end up being euthanized/killed by the game warden. That’s the last thing I’d want to have happen, so we just let bears live their natural lives - albeit with occasional interaction or close-calls, as was the case here. We try to discourage bears from getting this close to our home.
There really is plenty of food for them. Bears aren’t ripe this time of year, but there is all sorts of greenery, leftover acorns, and lots of grubs in fallen logs and debris.
      Don’t worry!

🤣 - There is SO much for a bear to eat in these woods, they’ll never go hungry! Plus, the acorns are dropping like mad this year, already. I’ve got loads of trail camera footage with wonderful audio of bears crunching on acorns. It’s such a treat to hear up close.
Unfortunately, this old adage becomes true a little too often around here:
“A fed bear is a dead bear.”
It’s best for bears to remain wild and to source their food naturally, as they’ve done for thousands of years. Bears who are fed by humans can become inured to humans, and ultimately become aggressive in seeking human-sourced food. When that happens, and it does, those bears often end up shot dead by the game warden as they’ve become a danger to the community. It’s so much better to keep bears wild, and to allow them to retain their natural fear of humans. It keeps everyone safe and healthy - both bears and humans.

I dunno - I think it makes more sense to trust the bear experts and fur-bearer biologists of the world on this point.
The biologists know that it’s best to help keep bears wild. That way the bears can avoid being shot to death by game wardens.

Zarya X. - yes, early spring there isn’t as much for them to eat in season. It’s a while before the berries fruit. But at least there is always still other mast around - acorns, fresh new greens, and loads of grubs in the dying trees and rotting trunks along the forest floor. We can’t feed the birds once the bears wake up. Just not safe because the seed is too tempting for them.

I remember this family! My favorite picture was of one of these cubs with his back to the camera staring out over the landscape. Was that the boy and girl cubs? Wish I could remember whar you named them. Didn't know I had been a subscriber so long. Didn't the older dog die? The mother became a favorite of yours and the three of them loved the first hammock.
P.S. Maybe I am wrong? I see where I commented a year ago. I still think I remembered them from long ago. Isn't this before you bought more of the mountain?

    • @FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS
      @FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS  Год назад

You are so thoughtful! I'm honored that you have been following these stories.
So, Yes - this was well before we purchased more land! We weren't able to afford the land until after the pandemic started.
While they can often look quite similar, this video wasn't featuring Mama Bear Bertha (who I've come to call, "Mama Darryl") and her 2 cubs, "The Darryls" -- aka Darryl and The Other Darryl. 🤣 Mama & The Darryls were our star family more recently - from spring 2020 to early spring 2021. Sadly, the beloved girl cub of that family, Darryl, likely never returned to the top of our mountain in the spring of 2021. I think I may have seen her, but I can't be sure. *sniff* (Darryl was the cub whose image I captured, perched way up high in that hickory tree, overlooking the valley. She was so precious!)
So *this video* you just watched was captured 4 years ago - back in 2018. I'm pretty sure this is also the same family who was the first to visit the Hammock! 🥰 I could confirm that if I spent some time looking at the archives. -- I captured my first Hammock Bears video that year. Shortly after hanging my first hammock, I discovered that huge gaping hole in the netting. That's when I knew to set put up a trail camera or two and train them on the hammock to see if the culprits came back. And they did, thank goodness!
One really cool thing having so many years-worth of wildlife footage in one place, is that I can refer back to older footage to try to identify specific bears, or to see if I can find a pattern of movement or of dominance in a territory. It's always a thrill to realize I'm seeing certain bears who have passed through here before, even 7 or 8 years ago.
I'm not sure why Mama Darryl hasn't come back up here this year. I think she is probably doing OK. Our neighbor at the bottom of the mountain caught some footage of a Mama Bear with 3 cubs this year. That Mama Bear looked and moved quite like Mama Darryl, so I hope that was her, and that she's doing well. I wish she'd return, but there may be some subtle family dynamics that are keeping her away. My guess is that some of the more mature Mama Bears, or perhaps just one matriarch may have ceded much of our mountain-top to other bears, like Sadie and Belle, who are both first-time Moms. I've heard there can be strict hierarchies and more subtle understandings between bears. I just wish I knew what they were! :-)

    Wat do they eat?

    • @FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS
      @FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS  4 года назад +2

Mostly berries, grubs, greenery, and mast/acorns.
We have berry bushes all over our property, and this time of year, we can often hear them rustling through the canes, foraging for berries. We also lined all of the walking trails we had cut throughout our property with fallen logs. As the logs degrade, the bears love to raid them and rip them apart for the grubs inside.
When people are careless, bears will end up eating pet food, bird seed, and poorly secured human trash. It’s really not good when that happens as they can become accustomed to easy access to such high-nutrient food and can become dangerous when they become more demanding. (Too often game wardens have to kill (euthanize) the bears when that happens. Damn shame.) It is always best when bears can survive on their own in the wild. The forests are full of excellent food sources for them.
Last year was a huge bounty-year for mast. Check out this ginormous Momma Bear with her grown cubs noshing on all the acorns near our home:
