A Momma black bear and her two cubs play on a hammock.

There's a lot more where this video came from. This video may be my favorite of the lot, though, because of the hilariously anthropomorphic Yoga poses that Momma Bear strikes. She is quite the character, isn’t she? And she’s brilliantly playful, too. I have compiled lots of bear family footage over the years, and I’ve never seen a Momma Bear be quite so playful with her cubs before. She and her cubs are a joy to witness.
In this 2nd video from the first Hammock Bears series, you will hear our dogs barking, and the rain falling. The first time you hear the barking, the sound is a bit more remote and the cubs look unperturbed because the dogs are on the back side of the house. Eventually the barking and the rain die down as Momma bear heads east, out of our dogs' view, toward the hammock. Later in the video, our dogs were let out into the front yard, which is closer and just in view of the hammock. (We had no idea the bears were on our hammock at the time.) Our dogs smelled the bears nearby and started to bark again. This time the barking was closer and louder. Momma bear stood on her hind legs to check out the possible threat. The bear cubs played just a tiny bit longer but Momma bear decided to leave and find a safer, quieter place, and her cubs followed. I love how one of the cubs pounces on top of the other just as they are leaving the scene....
Watching this series is a bit like watching a three-ring circus, isn’t it? I can always find something new to enjoy with each viewing. I hope the same thing happens for you, too.
This footage is from a series of videos I’ve taken in the gardens of my Western North Carolina mountain home. I have captured footage of other bears playing with this same hammock, as well. It seems our place has become a popular hang-out since it's so close to a favorite traveling corridor. It’s likely this video series has spoiled me for any other critter-cam footage I may capture in the future. Not that I mind, though. My heart is full!

We’re well-stocked for now. Once this old cotton rope hammock gives up the ghost, we have a new, stronger rope hammock by Twin Oaks ready to go. Al and I got to perform in the Twin Oaks Community during a festival that was held on their commune grounds. Their cottage industries are fantastic. (Heirloom seeds, hammocks, etc. We loved their “Hammock Chair” so much we ended up getting another one for our new home. It’s so comfortable you can fall asleep in it. Highly recommended.)

this is incredibly funny. Watching these bears destroy that hammock in a game is priceless. And the momma bear entering is a riot. How many hammocks do you have? Obviously they keep coming back for more playtime.

Looks like Goldilocks' bed is there too for sleepovers. Goldi always likes to drop in. The hammock gives them a lot of exercise. Love these guys. When I was little, there was a children's song called The Teddy Bears' Picnic. Their enjoyable "hammock days" reminds me of it. Thanks for the videos you share with us. They are so enjoyable. It's almost like Mom told them they could only play at the hammock for a few minutes they had too much to do.
When Mama bear stood up she grabbed the hammock as if to steady it for her cub. Then it was like "what the heck"? And let go, then blop off he fell! Too cute!

It would be an amazing experience and an honor to be a certified wildlife rehabber and get to raise orphan cubs.
If you are on Instagram, you have to look up "Kilham Bear Rescue" - a name like that, anyway. If you type @Kilhambear - you'll probably find it? The staff there post videos of their orphan cubs as they grow and learn nearly every day. Sometimes several times a day. Such a treat! (I'm rarely on Instagram, but I do go to visit from time to time, especially to see the posts from Ben Kilham!)

I didn’t intend for this to happen, but I sure am happy it did, and continues to happen. This year’s bear family was at the hammock again just yesterday! It was their 5th visit this year. :-)

It probably would have lasted another year, but I decided to upgrade to a new poly-fiber version. The new hammock is still going strong, despite lots of ‘bear-love’ being thrown at it. I’m so glad that different bears still come to visit the hammock from time to time.

Zagheera - you mean grown up since the video of them when they climbed the tree with their Mom when they were near our house? Definitely. They probably wouldn’t have been able to reach the hammock back then!

These are amazing, feel good LOL videos. They are so playful. It really makes me wonder if they are putting on a show. I'm 30 minutes north of Minneapolis. We have a couple come thru every yr. Last yr 1 was about the size of my newfoundland dogs. He came right upto a open window. Double take, I realized it was a bear. And I ask him nicely to backup he was to close to me, looked me right in the eyes & turned around and walked to bird feeder. Being 2 feet from him was special. Can't wait to see more. Thank you.
