Sharpening a Ryoba Saw

- I'm currently making some woven wooden screens but during the process my saw went blunt. So in this video I show you that its not that hard to sharpen a fine 240mm ryoba.

On this channel you can learn some tips on blade sharpening, saw sharpening, bringing old tools back into a lifetime of service. l I'm going to show off my Japanese tools and do project videos where I predominantly use Japanese tools to make stuff. I like starting woodworking projects with a log so you will get to see my axes and ripping saws at work before we move on to nomi and ryoba.
I'm no master but I've got some skills and some very nice toys. On this channel I share what I know and what I think will help and invite you to join me learning new stuff and exploring different tools and techniques.

When i was a kid i was taught how to sharpen a western\American push saw. I struggled at first with holding the file at the right angle so my dad cut a 4 inch section of square dowel (3\4 inch) and used the saw to put a groove down the middle about a quater of the way through. The end he cut at the correct angle so I could just slide it down as I went and I have a wood guide to keep it consistent. Worked pretty well for me and even once i hot to where i could do without I still used it so I could have a visual reference point. So if anyone is struggling with that the way I did it may be a good option for you. I think it would apply here just the same.
Should you work on you technic of lifting on the return stroke it will cut and last longer.
I love the attitude towards saw sharpening on display here! Still wondering how to get those secondary bevels on the crosscut side done though..
You could see right a way while you were sharpening that it was working. The light reflected from the teeth newly sharpened.
Thanks for noticing that. Took me a couple of attempts to get the camera angle right so you could see it.

Sorry I didn't reply to this earlier. I've only just seen it.
I've got heaps. Some are incredibly expensive. $500aud each others less than $50 if there is something wrong with them, as in water damage.
Good skill to have,these days it cheaper to buy a new saw than pay somebody to sharpen it for you.cheers Craig

So am I. Woke up this morning and I think I'm well on the mend. But gees a whole month being sick sucks. So I have some empathy for what you are dealing with.
I use the japanese saws that you only change the blade. So how frequently do you sharpen your saw?
I've got those as well. In fact I sell them but the handmade blades are next level. I use disposable blades a fair bit but the handmade blades are superior both in speed and finish.
When they are sharp that is.

Yeah the set doesn't need to be re-set evert time. Especially if you file with the set.

@@Chain21SAW Sorry I left you last comment for so long. To be honest it kind of threw me and with my head going dark and being physically sick as well it was easier just to run away for awhile. I've been on Patreon for a while but I've got to redo the whole thing.
I wonder if a good feather file would cut an "induction hardened" ryoba saw? (I have my doubts!)
Well it depends what you mean by good. A good hardened steel feather file won't sharpen an induction hardened modern industrial saw because the hardness of the two metals is too similar. For that you need a good diamond feather file. You can get them but they are not cheap.

Thank you very much you may find this hard to believe but I got into a debate with another journeyman carpenter about sharpening Japanese saws I say you could he says it's not possible apparently it is very possible and thank you very much for helping in this debate. I'm going to pick up some subscription from you because you said a name Mr Paul Sellers I subscribe to his channel nice man very knowledgeable wish I could meet him in person. Anyway thank you very much and that's one six pack to me(Guinness),,,, yes there was a bet on this LOL LOL LOL.
