Robert Schumann - Dichterliebe, Op. 48 Pt 1-4 Fischer-Dieskau Salzburg 1956

  • I received a kind request (thank you!) to upload some of this performance of Dichterliebe and decided that this would be a perfect presentation to honor Fischer-Dieskau's 84th birthday on May 28. This performance comes from Fischer-Dieskau's debut solo recital at the Salzburg Festival on August 13, 1956. His partner at the piano is Gerald Moore.
    "Dichterliebe", 'The Poet's Love' (composed 1840), is the best-known song cycle of Robert Schumann (Op. 48). The texts for the 16 songs come from the "Lyrisches Intermezzo" of Heinrich Heine, composed 1822-1823, published as part of the poet's "Das Buch der Lieder".
    The very natural, almost hyper-sensitive poetical affections of the poems are beautifully mirrored in Schumann's settings, with their miniaturist chromaticism and suspensions. The poet's love is a hothouse of nuanced responses to the delicate language of flowers, dreams and fairy-tales. Schumann adapts the words of the poems to his needs for the songs, sometimes repeating phrases and often rewording a line to supply the desired cadence.
    Notes from Wikipedia.
    English translations of the Heine poems by Paul Hindemith.
    Dichterliebe, Op. 48
    Part 1, Songs 1-6
    Im wunderschönen Monat Mai,
    Als alle Knospen sprangen,
    Da ist in meinem Herzen
    Die Liebe aufgegangen.
    Im wunderschönen Monat Mai,
    Als alle Vögel sangen,
    Da hab' ich ihr gestanden
    Mein Sehnen und Verlangen.
    In the wonderfully beautiful month of May
    When all the buds are bursting open,
    There, from my own heart,
    Bursts forth my own love.
    In the wonderfully beautiful month of May
    When all the birds are singing,
    So have I confessed to her
    My yearning and my longing.
    Aus meinen Tränen sprießen
    Viel blühende Blumen hervor,
    Und meine Seufzer werden
    Ein Nachtigallenchor.
    Und wenn du mich lieb hast, Kindchen,
    Schenk' ich dir die Blumen all',
    Und vor deinem Fenster soll klingen
    Das Lied der Nachtigall.
    From my tears sprout forth
    Many blooming flowers,
    And my sighing become joined with
    The chorus of the nightingales.
    And if you love me, dear child,
    I will send you so many flowers;
    And before your window should sound
    The song of the nightingale.
    Die Rose, die Lilie, die Taube, die Sonne,
    Die liebt' ich einst alle in Liebeswonne.
    Ich lieb' sie nicht mehr, ich liebe alleine
    Die Kleine, die Feine, die Reine, die Eine;
    Sie selber, aller Liebe Wonne,
    Ist Rose und Lilie und Taube und Sonne.
    Ich liebe alleine die Kleine,
    die Feine, die Reine, die Eine.
    The rose, the lily, the dove, the sun,
    I loved them all once in love's bliss.
    I love them no more, I love only
    The Small, the Fine, the Pure the One;
    I love only them.
    She herself--the source of all love--
    IS the rose, lily, dove, and sun
    I love only that which is small,
    Fine, pure--the one, the ONE!
    Wenn ich in deine Augen seh',
    So schwindet all' mein Leid und Weh;
    Doch wenn ich küße deinen Mund,
    So werd' ich ganz und gar gesund.
    Wenn ich mich lehn' an deine Brust,
    Kommt's über mich wie Himmelslust;
    Doch wenn du sprichst: ich liebe dich!
    So muß ich weinen bitterlich.
    When I gaze into your eyes,
    All my pain and woe vanishes;
    Yet when I kiss your lips,
    I am made wholly and entirely healthy.
    When I lay against your breast
    It comes over me like longing for heaven;
    Yet when you say, "I love you!"
    I must cry so bitterly.
    Ich will meine Seele tauchen
    In den Kelch der Lilie hinein;
    Die Lilie soll klingend hauchen
    Ein Lied von der Liebsten mein.
    Das Lied soll schauern und beben
    Wie der Kuß von ihrem Mund,
    Den sie mir einst gegeben
    In wunderbar süßer Stund'.
    I want to delve my soul
    Into the cup of the lily;
    The lily should give resoundingly
    A song belonging to my beloved.
    The song should shudder and tremble
    Like the kiss from her lips
    That she once gave me
    In a wonderfully sweet hour.
    Im Rhein, im heiligen Strome,
    Da spiegelt sich in den Well'n
    Mit seinem großen Dome
    Das große, heil'ge Köln.
    Im Dom da steht ein Bildnis,
    Auf goldenem Leder gemalt;
    In meines Lebens Wildnis
    Hat's freundlich hinein gestrahlt.
    Es schweben Blumen und Eng'lein
    Um unsre liebe Frau;
    Die Augen, die Lippen, die Wänglein,
    Die gleichen der Liebsten genau.
    In the Rhine, in the holy stream
    Is it mirrored in the waves -
    With its great cathedral -
    That great, holy city Cologne.
    In the Cathedral stands an image
    Painted on golden leather;
    Into the wildness of my life
    Has it shone, friendly.
    Flowers and little cherubs hover
    Around our beloved Lady;
    The eyes, the lips, the cheeks--
    They match my beloved's exactly.
    Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (baritone)
    Gerald Moore (piano)

    I just came back to this song because I had to do a music assignment, and I remember this, then coincidentally, it comes to my mind. "GFriend? Wait that was in Summer rain!" and it came at exactly the time that my interest and stan-ness of GFriend was/is at it's peak, amazing.

    ESTE LIEDER TITULADO AMOR DEL POETA,la esperanza surge constantemente en la voz del poeta,es decirrr,que su amada le corresponda,se ve siempre interrumpida por elegíacos cambios de armonía y distorsiones burlonas de las frases melódicas cantadas,hasta que al final,cuando aquel acepta la pérdida de su amada,el piano inicia un epílogo de lo mas connomvedor,un hermoso recuento de felicidad establecido más alla de la recuperación.A veces Schumann,en el arte de los Lieders puede superar a SCHUBERT.

    Another device that Schumann used is the ambiguity of tonality. In " Im wunderschönen Monat Mai" , although the tonic appears to be
    F♯ minor, the voice was introduced with what appears to be A major cadence. This ambiguity of tonality expressed ( ALTHOUGH THE WORDS DID NOT EXPRESS) that the result of his love is uncertain. A perfect example of music expressing what the words do not say.

    This is a fine performance of this song cycle by DFD. He sings with a longer smoother legato line here than later in his career. The high A in Ich Grolle Nicht is great, open, and free. The tempo is stricter and slower throughout also, less rubato. Also more consistent tone color in the phrasing. Compare this to his performance with Demus later, and with Horowitz in 1976.

    In the process of transposing editors have looked at tonalities but also at how something fits the voice. Schumann wrote this cycle for high voice but quite a few songs fit nicely in the baritone range and would even become a bit too low if transposed down. Numbers 9-14 are also performed in the original keys. The same can be seen in all the other Schumann cycles, as well as with Schubert and Brahms.

    It is a lot to take in. I hadn't listened to this performance in quite some time and was actually floored (again!) by it, listening over and over to certain passages while working on this. The entire recital was Heine settings, 1956 being a Heine anniversary year (centenary of his death).

    Excellent analysis, but I am confused with the recording. It seems that Dietrich is singing "Im wunderschonen" a whole step down from the original f#/A key that was written in the original manuscripts. That's fine since we are changing the key for a baritone singer, but by the time we get to "Ich Grolle Nicht" he is singing in the original key of C! Shouldn't "Ich Grolle Nicht" be transposed down to Bflat as the first group of songs were transposed down a whole step? Can anyone shed some light?

  • @JochanaanNL
    @JochanaanNL 12 лет назад

    I agree with you that Bflat is a better choice musically. However, a low Bflat is a slippery note for a high lyric baritone and the last one needs to be rather loud. Having said that, I also believe it is a prestige thing amongst baritones to sing the Cmajor version. It's not all artistic integrity.

    Thanks for that information, but I don't feel that singing a low Bflat at the end of "Ich Grolle Nicht" is too low...I have found many baritone books that also transpose this piece down a whole step. I think it would be more important to preserve Schumann's intentions regarding the harmonic relationships between each song in the cycle even if it is transposed down. I understand that editors want to make the range comfortable for low voice, but Schumann was known for challenging a singer's range.

    Nobody knows Jens Avocadis. If he is really almost identical to Fischer-Dieskau then please reveal his existence to the world :-)

    I haven't noticed any mucuous layer on his voice there. The only human constringement I can hear is the morron that starts coughing at one of the most sensitive and pianississimo moments of the whole cycle. It's just after 4:15
    Somebody kill that guy if he is not already dead!
