I think the test might be flawed bc the head band was distorting his hears and probably breaking the seal on the headphones. Also in some of the test it looked like the blindfold was over the top part of the ear changing the shape of the ear and also possibly introduction damping. Just have him close his eyes next time. Having him close his eyes will also help to properly test sound stage.
It might also be flawed if he was told beforehand the order in which he would be given the headphones, or if someone offscreen was telling him which was which.
Fail with that blindfold. First, any type of fabric between the drivers and the ears will affect the sound. Second, you are breaking the seal between the pads and around the ear which effect the sound. Third, there is no need to be blindfolded if you put on the headphones from the back as your vision can't extract anything from that angle.
Thanks for your observation. The test was a preferential test. The test subject, who has been an audio engineer for the better part of a decade, didn't prefer planar magnetic. It had nothing to do with a blindfold or the seal of the headphones. While normally, we would agree with you that things like this can effect the listening environment. When your test subject is a professional in the field, the blindfold becomes irrelevant. We appreciate your feedback. Since this video we have upgraded the blindfold that we use for our videos so there will not be a question over the legitimacy of the results of our tests.

Brief listening comparisons can be confusing because we tend to first notice tonal differences and changes in the quantity of highs and lows. Long term listening will better reveal the true quality of a phone (or speaker) such as presence or absence of distortion and other resonant colourations that often go unnoticed during brief listening.
You are generally correct with that observation, but I'd say it more applies to the general public and not Audio Professionals. This test however, was a test to see if Ryan could tell the difference between Planar and Dynamic, which he could. The brief period that Ryan did listen to the headphones was actually enough for him to pick out the tonal quality, coloration, and absence of frequencies. He prefers Dynamic to planar, but this test was simply about which headphone was planar and which wasn't .
I like your video since I am planning to buy a new headset to replace my BOSS QC25. Hifiman's planner speaker headset is on my options list. But the listener's upper ear appears covered by the strip. I wonder that may affect the sound quality. Anyway, this is a good video for reference.
No disrespect to you but having bachelors of science in Audio Production doesn't make you an audiophile..simple things like wearing a headphone correctly are things that an audiophile or headphone lover will never mess up even they are in the middle of a gun shootout. Volume match any of the planars here from a phone and something like the Auralic Taurus Mk II : if you don't value the headroom, black background and effortless delivery provided by the Taurus, congratulations - you don't need to spend another cent on audio.
This video has crippling flaws: -Missing HD 650's (The go to reference dynamic headphone) -HE 400S is less detailed than the 400i (According to Head-Fi) -Proper seal was not made -Headphones were not burned in (A process which changes the sound of headphones) -You were asking which one he liked more, not which one was planar vs dynamic -He is shown with the Audeze EL-8's in the start of the video, backwards lol -The Audeze EL-8's he was wearing... were closed back, which have less detail than open Ryan seemed uncomfortable doing this, and I could see why. I also think him intentionally wearing closed EL8's backwords was him meme-ing you. Also, you just sounded like you did not have a firm grasp of what you were doing throughout the video. pls throw the th 900 in there and then we can speak :D
Uploader, you clearly don't understand that a good amplifier brings a whole lot more to the table than volume. Volume match any of the planars here from a phone and something like the Auralic Taurus Mk II : if you don't value the headroom, black background and effortless delivery provided by the Taurus, congratulations - you don't need to spend another cent on audio.
This video has crippling flaws:
-Missing HD 650's (The go to reference dynamic headphone)
-HE 400S is less detailed than the 400i (According to Head-Fi)
-Proper seal was not made
-Headphones were not burned in (A process which changes the sound of headphones)
-You were asking which one he liked more, not which one was planar vs dynamic
-He is shown with the Audeze EL-8's in the start of the video, backwards lol
-The Audeze EL-8's he was wearing... were closed back, which have less detail than open
Ryan seemed uncomfortable doing this, and I could see why. I also think him intentionally wearing closed EL8's backwords was him meme-ing you. Also, you just sounded like you did not have a firm grasp of what you were doing throughout the video. You should have done more research.
Fostex t50rp mk3 is best value, why you talking that hifiman 400s is the best value, you are paid
Yeah true. Modding ftw.
Because not everyone has the same opinion, you know...
Best headphones for value for acoustic and piano etc is on the Beyerdynamic DT 880.
Mickxal If you can live with the killing highs and almost no mids
Jeremy Clarkson Still the best pair of headphones I have. I might go for the T1 soon. I hate bass and love tremble so these a perfect. Also the imaging is really good. Soundstage decent. Mids... I dont think they are bad.
