I am stationed at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. There are 2 casinos on this Base and another 3 on other bases close by within a 20 minute drive. I have gambled alot but thankfully quit on my own because I simply HATE losing money. I have seen others, active duty and retired, waste away their savings at these casinos over the Last 7 years. There are signs on the doors that give resources for gambling addiction, but they are only there because it's a requirement. These casino's don't care about you and will steal your joy. Everytime I pass those casinos, I get a sick feeling in my stomach and all I want to do is go in there to tell others to stop. I like your content! Thanks for creating this channel.

Thanks for this! The on-post/base facilities are run by MWR and make a lot of money off of service members and their families. The problem is that none of it is used for education, screening, or treatment of this addiction.

Can you tell me how there are casino games on what is pretty much territory the US controls? I'm guessing the businesses are owned by locals on the base but what if the US government didn't want them on their bases? Could Germany say hey we're a sovereign country and can do whatever we want on our land. Or are the casinos in cahoots with the bases? Just seems off they'd put such a vice on a military base full of young men with not much to do.

full credit to Dave for his excellent description of his struggle. I hope he stays free of the urge. One question I would have liked to ask him is - did he have a good and happy childhood? There quite often seems to be a correlation between an unhappy childhood or a childhood trauma and subsequent addiction.

I had an liberal arts instructor at my college. He told a story about his Navy days. He lost two months worth of pay in a poker game. After that, he never gambled again. He said people learn in two ways, either from pain, or from learning from observation. Most of us learn from pain. That’s just human nature.

I was stationed in Darmstadt Germany from 1989-1992 and they had slot machines in the bowling alley. I used to play them all the time, thankfully I didn't get addicted at the time. Unfortunately, in the past seven years, I've run up about $70k in credit card debt gambling. Thankfully it's just me, no wife, no kids, but my weakness of gambling has really set me back financially. Luckily I do pay my bills before I gamble, but it's gone from just spending my spending money to now, just paying minimums on credit card and using the rest on trying to win more money. I'm so disappointed in myself.

I used to watch the strippers at the Orchard Park Tavern right across the street from Greenwood racetrack. I spent all my time betting the races and playing the pinball machines at the racetrack and across the street at the tavern. I was quite a good drinker to boot. I never lost a game of pool in all the decades at the Orchard park Tavern. We used to play 9 ball.

Ive gambled all my life (on and off) As well, ive had small addictions ( weed, nicotine etc) All of which I do on and off. Never has it got to the point where i need to go gambling or that ive ruined my rep or had huge problems because of gambling. Although in my early 20s id always be broke because id spend what little i had on gambling. Like $100-$200. There must be a spectrum of gambling addiction because i sometimes wonder if i have one but im nowhere near this guy and his story

Everything in life and human behaviour can be categorized on a sliding scale its not either you are are not... The difference is that if you cant set any bounderies at all you have no control of youre actions.. I play poker and definately play when i should not sometimes out of boredom or when im tired but i have fixed rules i never brake bank roll management is nr 1..i study the game make logical decision its not gamble in that sense but it triggers dopamine gives a rush
But i can quit that brakes for weeks on my own and quit when i loose and start to play bad.. If you have an addiction you cant quit you brake every rules you set out because its an emotional respons of some sort you are getting....

Building net worth and learning to i invest wisely will make a person more mature and the maturity and understanding of finances will help degenerate gamblers learn to not gamble anymore. Understanding gambling is a dead end/ no win situation will come with time.

Very few people have the ability to be a winning gambler. It's very difficult..perhaps only 1 % can find an edge in sports / racing or poker for eg.
The biggest problem for most people is bankroll management..discipline.
People prone to develop serious gambling problems can't control themselves..any win will always be given back.
I have a friend with a serious problem whom has done that many many times . Won big and given it all back within a few days..
Even in this story the man turned 200 into a few k and ledt the casino broke.
