Didn't Tavares also say that his best chance to win a Cup was with the Leafs and not the Isles? (That didn't age well thx to Barry Trotz and Lou Lamoriello !!
You’re right. Trotz has an ability to make teams play above expectations. When he was with the preds he was taking a bad teams to the playoffs consistently. On paper, the caps weren’t the best team in the league when they took the cup either.
Just found you're channel and watched a lot of videos. Great content and commentary. Keep it up! Also loved the bit about St.Louis, he was the player that got me into watching hockey. as mentioned his size and skill was unusual at the time and made me gain interest. I had the choice much later when buying a jersey between St.Louis or Stamkos(when Stamkos first started). It was a tough choice, me being young me at the time chose Stamkos. A nice jersey of Stammer without even an A on it. Still would of loved a St.Louis jersey though, the man was a beast in his entire career.
Isles fans were right to be pissed off and it wasn't just with Tavares as ownership obviously mishandled the situation equally as terrible as Tavares. I remember fans pooled money together to have a "Fire Snow" billboard put up and Tavares using his NTC against the Isles as well as the media statements.... The pyjama photo the day of the signing after allegedly having a mental breakdown deciding between NYI and TOR was a little salt in the wound. for Isles fans. That said, definitely a blessing in disguise. Saved a giant cap hit, forced ownership reform and ended up bringing in Barry Trotz. 3 playoffs and 2 Conference Finals since says it all.
You forgot to mention the real reason why Mario Trembley left Patrick Roy in for all those goals. Roy and Trembley were teammates back in the 80's and became bunkmates too because they both spoke French. They didn't get along very well and because Roy was 5 times the player Trembley was he wanted revenge. I watched that game on ESPN 2 and everyone was in shock that Roy wasn't pulled after the sixth goal. That was the point at which people realized what was really going on. Trembley didn't last too much longer in MTL after that and I don't think he ever got another head coaching job in the NHL. He was a piece of shit that hurt both Roy and Montreal for his own little head game's sake. I hope he goes to hockey hell where he plays goalie and just let's in overtime goals in the playoffs over and over again.
No problem. I was watching the game on TV at a friend's house and it was just a train wreck we couldn't look away from. I was happy when Roy won the cup shortly there after with Colorado and Trembley was canned. Good times.
Lol when u were talking about St. Louis being snubbed from team Canada in 2010 I thought u got the year wrong cuz I knew it happened in 2014 but I was so shocked to find out that it happened twice
I understand both sides of the "upset about the way he left" argument. If you're leaving to go to a new team because you're upset after giving 9 years to a team that you haven't had any success would you a) tell them you're going to leave, resulting in the team you're going to sacrificing assets in order to get you and thus having a harder time succeeding or b) tell them you're not going to leave so your new team doesn't have to sacrifice assets? If you want to succeed option b makes more sense. That being said, if you want to succeed then perhaps you should look somewhere other than Toronto but that's a different question. Obviously I can understand from Isles fans being upset that you lost a big asset and got nothing in return because he misled you as well.
Also, when Phil Kessel was traded from the Leafs to the Penguins on July 1st, 2015. He posted a full page ad in the Toronto Star saying how happy he was to leave. 'No matter what I did on or off the ice, no matter how poorly constructed the roster was during my six years in town, you blamed me.....Thank you Toronto, I will never forget you'. Now whenever he plays in Toronto he gets boooed, including from me lol.
I mean I think the Isles got the last laugh on Tavares at this point right? They could never win so he finally left. Now he’s on a joke franchise that can’t win a series to save their lives, and the Isles are almost to a cup.
Cause of Toronto’s first round exits: 2019 (Boston): Inability to kill penalties 2020 (Columbus): Lacklustre offense 2021 (Montreal): Tavares injury, unnecessary coach’s challenge and Marner delay of game penalty in Game 6
The Tavares signing gives me second hand embarrassment as a leafs fan especially since we still haven’t won a round since he joined the roster. I know I would be heartbroken if the superstar of my team left but I’m glad to have him on the team I support. I hope he can find success in Toronto this year
I dont hate Johnny. But imagine if Mathews said year after year that he was coming back, only to head to Minnesota in FA the first chance he got. So the Leafs got no return for him.
As a lifelong Detroit Lions sympathizer, I completely understand star athletes getting frustrated by playing years for shitty teams. Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson’s careers were more or less wasted. I would have been happy to see either one of them get a chance at a ring.
Meanwhile the seven million dollar man wrecked the chemistry with a four month holdout thus squishing The Leafs chances again. The so-called talented youngsters do not have Stanley Cup desire in their hearts.
Actually, Mario Tremblay didn’t pull Roy out of the game because he wasn’t respectful but because he thought that Roy was too confident. He wanted to break him so that Roy would listen more to his authority.
what's misunderstood ab JT is that in 16-17 the isles missed by ONE POINT, they had the tiebreaker with Toronto and if they had gotten one point (like hickey not kicking it in his own net with 30 seconds left) that would of gotten them 3 straight playoff appearances and 4 in 5 years, that totally changes the talk around the team. Also he really wanted to stay, it was only the pitch by Toronto that he didnt even want to be at until his agent convinced him that he was swayed, but who knows if the islanders do what they did these last 2 years without the extra cap space his departure afforded them
Being from Toronto i can honestly say I do not like how the leafs pick players and scout future players. I do not care about names i care about results and numbers, John Tavares currently gets paid 11 million a year with an average of 0.94 points per game 0.81 points per game in playoffs. Some may argue that average doesn't accurately reflect a player due to multiple variables like teammates ice time etc... at the end of the day I believe your salary should accurately reflect your performance. Connor mcdavid gets paid 12.5 million a year with a 1.47 points per game and over a point per game in the playoffs. The difference between Mcdavid and Tavares in terms of pay is only 1.5 million yet mcdavid averages .5 more points per game. On paper the leafs are a better team than edmonton yet Mcdavid can out point every single person on the leafs first line and second line. The leafs invested a total of 40 million on 4 players and have NOTHING to show for it. Islanders are doing better without Tavares and I applaud that, I think him leaving the team was for the better and it opens up a lot of other possibilities for them to work with. Leafs are stuck with 4 players that make up half of the salary cap with 15 other hot dog water players riding the 3rd and 4th line. If you are getting paid over 10 million dollars a year you better be getting over a point per game. disgusting watching the leafs throw games.
ooh what if you did most bizarre nhl breakups or something like that? tampa had a rough break with st. louis, but they literally paid lecavalier to leave 😂
The chants when the maple leafs visited the coliseum after JTs departure were hilarious tho. I forget who made the video I believe it was sportsmen but someone did a video on it. Isles one that game by 2+ goals
Great video as usual but in regard to Martin St- Louis, as great as he was, he didn't set thr precedent for small hockey players. In the 1960s, 5'5" Yvan Cournoyer broke into the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens. The first player to beat Wayne Gretzky for the league scoring title was 5'8" Marcel Dionne. Denis Savard was overlooked by the Montreal Canadiens in favour of Doug Wickenheiser (ht. 6'4"), Denis Savard was 5'8" (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). It is unfortunate however that even today a big man tends to be favoured over the small man. But at the top levels of any sport, minute differences at lower levels become HUGE.
Lol when I was 6 or 7, my mom and I crossed out Feddys name and number on my jersey before we went to a game. The hate for him after he left Detroit was real
From someone in the know who covers the Islanders regularly, this is what happened. Tavares was approached by Isles management the year before his contract was up and they gave him a great offer. But he didn't sign. At that point, then GM Garth Snow told the Islanders owners that he was going to trade him because it was obvious he wasn't going to sign with us and he didn't want an asset like that to walk out the door with nothing to show. Owners did not want to trade him and they proceeded to have a "heart to heart" with Tavares and his agent. They constructed a handshake deal that Tavares would test the free agent waters to make sure he was getting a fair market price from Isles but that he would sign with them. Tavares asked Islanders NOT to trade him. However, between that time and the time his contract expired, he got engaged. His fiancee' and both families put a lot of pressure on him to sign with his hometown team. Plus Toronto convinced him that Islanders would never get a new building as they had been talking about that for years. They would just be the same old Islanders forever. So he went back on his word and signed with Leafs. Supposedly, Lamoriello knew the week prior that Tavares wouldn't sign and they had already moved on. The bottom line is that Tavares was 100% dishonest in his dealings with Islander management. Having said that, I did not like the "we don't need you" chants as having Tavares could have been enough extra for us to beat the Lightning. And he was a terrific captain while the Islanders squandered his most productive years under Wang/Snow/Capuano.
St. Louis is not a reason that Caufield and Gaudreau exist in the NHL - or if so he may be merely ONE reason. There have been quite a few smaller players, like Ted Lindsay, Henri Richard, Yvan Cournoyer, Theo Fleury, and Brian Gionta - just to name a few - who were extraordinary players.
You could do a whole video on the Blackhawks breaking up with their star players because they wanted to be paid what they were owed. Bobby Hull, Stan Makita, Jeremy Roenick, etc...
My brother was an intern in the amalie arena and they moment Marty was traded, they had to tear down everything with his face on it, sad. Unrelated, I play hockey at that arena of the lighnting training footage. Actually use to work there too. I sometimes got to watch these sessions, was looking for me in the footage
I used to hate him. idrc ab it anymore but hearing all of his interviews of him saying he wanted to be here and wanted to be a lifer still irks me. I understand why he would want to out but why couldn’t he just say it you know? We were offered stamkos for jt at one point. We could’ve got assets but instead his whole tenure was nothing really. Hope he recovers from that injury tho.
@@AMan_629 He changed his mind. It's that simple. He found himself in a position in which he had the luxury of chasing a dream. He probably felt he owed it to himself more than he owed anything to the Isles. Plus the club found that it was relying on JT way too much; it was hurting their potential.
I agree, but the reason the Isles fans were so pissed was because Tavares was saying how he didn’t want to leave all year, then he bailed in the summer right away. At the same time, what was the guy supposed to say to the reporters all season? “Yeah I’m definitely out of here after the season ends” Players just don’t do that, that’s why I don’t really agree with their anger towards him.
The absolute worst break up was Bobby Hull when he left the Blackhawks and went to the rival WHA. Not only did he leave the team but the Blackhawks received NOTHING in return and ensured no more Cups till 2010.
“Wasn’t even considered” yeah he was. Stamkos got hurt and St. Louis replaced him, you said it yourself. Obviously if he was next in line to replace an injured forward he would have been considered.
I think the issue with the Leafs is that they have a bunch of generational talent that just doesn't gel. The Islanders got better when Tavares left because the team didn't rotate around one player. Most cup winning teams have three or four lines pulling their weight in offence. Having one expensive line is going to get you bumped in the first round over and over again.
As an Isles fan: like you said, it wasn't that Tavares wanted to go back to his home team, I get that, we would all sign a max contract for our home team. It was that he fed us sugar coated shit for years on how he was dedicated to the Island, then walked first chance he got. We could have gotten a king's ransom for him in a trade. But hey, Pajama Boy can enjoy his golf.
The New York Islanders in 2017 missed the playoffs by one point when the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3, stealing the last playoff spot In 2018, the Islanders finished with a losing record, allowing the most goals in the NHL. The year after Tavares’ departure from the Islanders (2019), the Islanders not only clinched second in the Metropolitan Division, but allowed the fewest goals in the NHL. Leafs fan here, but Islanders statistically were better than Toronto
With the team Canada “snub” you have to remember Canada has some of the greatest players to ever play the game. When building a team you can’t just stack it with talent and go. Specially with the skill level of the Russian and American teams being as good as they are. They built a team. Made selections based on having limited time to get them to play as a team. Which is why there were entire lines from nhl teams brought in to play for team Canada. But hey when your biggest problem is not inviting St.Louis to be on the team goes to show how great Canada is at hockey.
Maybe ironically, Mario Tremblay won more Stanley Cups for the Habs than Patrick Roy. So he had accomplished something for them, just not as a coach. As a player he was known as a hot head, as, of course, was Roy, so two French hot heads was just too much drama for one dressing room.
Although I like Marty, it’s Hard to criticize yzerman with two gold medals on teams he crafted. Also the current Tampa team success is still from the house he built. Can’t wait to see what he does in Detroit.
We are so sick of hearing about Tavares. Aside from a select few people, Islanders fans do not care about Tavares anymore. It’s been 3 years. Time for the rest of the league to move on too

The thing that always annoyed me with Tavares is that he acted like he never even considered going to Toronto. Then when he signs with them and says it's a life long dream
I'm a Canadiens fan and it's just so brutal how the fans are so fair weathered. Letting a two time Stanley Cup winner have it is just insane. I'd do anything for Carey Price to win one for us.
Letting the GOAT of goalies walk because of horrible fans and a stupid coach is the epitome of this franchise
Didn't Tavares also say that his best chance to win a Cup was with the Leafs and not the Isles? (That didn't age well thx to Barry Trotz and Lou Lamoriello !!
Yeah he’s a douchebag and it would serve him right if the Islanders win the Cup
You’re right. Trotz has an ability to make teams play above expectations. When he was with the preds he was taking a bad teams to the playoffs consistently. On paper, the caps weren’t the best team in the league when they took the cup either.

8:15 Little tidbit of interesting info.
When Roy was a rookie, He and Tremblay were room-mates, and they did NOT get along.
Keep up the good work bro love the vids
Just found you're channel and watched a lot of videos. Great content and commentary. Keep it up! Also loved the bit about St.Louis, he was the player that got me into watching hockey. as mentioned his size and skill was unusual at the time and made me gain interest. I had the choice much later when buying a jersey between St.Louis or Stamkos(when Stamkos first started). It was a tough choice, me being young me at the time chose Stamkos. A nice jersey of Stammer without even an A on it. Still would of loved a St.Louis jersey though, the man was a beast in his entire career.
After JT left it stung like crazy but after we did good so when that happened I could officially be proud to be an isles fan
Tavares pulled a Russell Wilson. Doesn’t wanna hurt the fan base so continuously lies to them but then leaves anyways like that isn’t worse
it had nothing to do with "hurting the fan base". it had only to do with not wanting to be traded.
You made my day sir
No problem. I was watching the game on TV at a friend's house and it was just a train wreck we couldn't look away from. I was happy when Roy won the cup shortly there after with Colorado and Trembley was canned. Good times.
The Islanders have won more playoffs series playing in Toronto than Tavares has playing in Toronto.
Fact
Martin St-Louis is such a model of perseverance. He earned all the good in the world.
Lol when u were talking about St. Louis being snubbed from team Canada in 2010 I thought u got the year wrong cuz I knew it happened in 2014 but I was so shocked to find out that it happened twice
Costing the Islanders not getting anything in return for him is what annoys me. It was like he was intentionally trying to screw them over.
I mean he burned 9 years of his career for nothing I think any guy would be pissed but I don’t think he did it on purpose
@@ajiboy1919 are you fucking delusional? he lied for 2 years about his intentions so they wouldn't trade him.
Hahaha, priceless.
Lmao love those NHL friends intros!
I mean I think the Isles got the last laugh on Tavares at this point right? They could never win so he finally left. Now he’s on a joke franchise that can’t win a series to save their lives, and the Isles are almost to a cup.

That bit on Tavares makes me smile! GOOOOOO ISLANDERS!!
That “goddamn” took me out 🤣
Great intro bud
St. Louis is the reason why I liked Tampa he deserved way more
As a lifelong Detroit Lions sympathizer, I completely understand star athletes getting frustrated by playing years for shitty teams. Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson’s careers were more or less wasted. I would have been happy to see either one of them get a chance at a ring.
I was at the first home game in Toronto after JT got booed and the welcome back we had for him was so great, Toronto is happy to have him!

The Islanders fans should’ve change there Tavares jerseys into Butch Goring jersey
Tavares deserves the hate
ooh what if you did most bizarre nhl breakups or something like that? tampa had a rough break with st. louis, but they literally paid lecavalier to leave 😂
The chants when the maple leafs visited the coliseum after JTs departure were hilarious tho.
I forget who made the video I believe it was sportsmen but someone did a video on it. Isles one that game by 2+ goals
Great video as usual but in regard to
Martin St- Louis, as great as he was, he didn't set thr precedent for small hockey players.
Definitely Sergei Federov for the Wings
Lol when I was 6 or 7, my mom and I crossed out Feddys name and number on my jersey before we went to a game. The hate for him after he left Detroit was real
I love how he pronounces french names! “ Mah-teh Saeh-Louis” “Patrick Wah”
you love how he pronounces them relatively correctly?
Still a great Captain…just now for the Leafs.
Go Leafs go!
Heatley leaving Ottawa was brutal.
See at least we had the decency to give standing ovations to Johnny and Chucky and then proceed to boo them all game
At 0:16, the "Good morning,Julia" guy has REALLY let himself go
Yes of course. But that’s the thing, it is a very small list. Each of them set a precedent in their own way.
When you listen to your pjamas instead of your brain.
How do you mention St. Louis in Tampa without Vinny?
You could do a whole video on the Blackhawks breaking up with their star players because they wanted to be paid what they were owed. Bobby Hull, Stan Makita, Jeremy Roenick, etc...
My brother was an intern in the amalie arena and they moment Marty was traded, they had to tear down everything with his face on it, sad.
Unrelated, I play hockey at that arena of the lighnting training footage. Actually use to work there too. I sometimes got to watch these sessions, was looking for me in the footage
I still find it delicious that so many Isles fans feel betrayed by Tavares to this day.
I hate when fans get that mad when I player leaves, it's business, players come and go and got to try and do what's best for them
I agree, but the reason the Isles fans were so pissed was because Tavares was saying how he didn’t want to leave all year, then he bailed in the summer right away. At the same time, what was the guy supposed to say to the reporters all season? “Yeah I’m definitely out of here after the season ends”
Players just don’t do that, that’s why I don’t really agree with their anger towards him.
I thought Roy was going to punch out the coach and gm that night. lol 😂
The absolute worst break up was Bobby Hull when he left the Blackhawks and went to the rival WHA. Not only did he leave the team but the Blackhawks received NOTHING in return and ensured no more Cups till 2010.
How the hell does Steve Yzerman decide to neglect Martin St Louis when he drafts guys like Yanni Gourde and Anthony Cerelli WHO BASICALLY HIS SIZE?!
“Wasn’t even considered” yeah he was. Stamkos got hurt and St. Louis replaced him, you said it yourself. Obviously if he was next in line to replace an injured forward he would have been considered.
St.Louis should’ve been an obvious choice not someone to ”be considered”
To whoever is reading this I hope you are having a great day

Thank you same with u
I bet everyone in Long Island was celebrating when Tavares got injured in that one playoff game lmao
Whenever people say Nela Lopušanová is gonna be too small to play in the NHL, I always look at St. Louis and laugh.
The New York Islanders in 2017 missed the playoffs by one point when the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3, stealing the last playoff spot
In 2018, the Islanders finished with a losing record, allowing the most goals in the NHL.
The year after Tavares’ departure from the Islanders (2019), the Islanders not only clinched second in the Metropolitan Division, but allowed the fewest goals in the NHL.
Leafs fan here, but Islanders statistically were better than Toronto
I couldn’t tell you we’re a leaf fan from your name and profile pic…
You can make that 4 straight first round exits

"Always trust the Yzerplan"
Although I like Marty, it’s Hard to criticize yzerman with two gold medals on teams he crafted. Also the current Tampa team success is still from the house he built. Can’t wait to see what he does in Detroit.
We are so sick of hearing about Tavares. Aside from a select few people, Islanders fans do not care about Tavares anymore. It’s been 3 years. Time for the rest of the league to move on too
