  • Having gone without an accessible school bus since kindergarten, seventh grader Alex is truly elated to finally be able to start the school year riding the "regular" neighborhood bus.
Alex is legally blind and severely disabled by spastic diplegic cerebral palsy.
However, thanks to the dedicated efforts of world class leading teams of medical professionals, physicians, surgeons, administrators, teachers, PT and OT therapists, aids, and so many others at Guilderland Central School District, my son Alex will finally be able to put to life changing use the fourth ever selective dorsal rhizotomy performed at Boston Childrens Hospital, multilevel orthopedic surgery that left hardware in him for life, more surgery to come removing screws from his knees, both hip surguries for sure, all of which has finally enabled him to overcome this physical barrier, STAIRS that are the ONLY way of boarding a PUBLIC bus in the year 2020.
Between 504, ADA, and IDEA, this GCSD bus #337 is explicitly required to be accessible.

I am beyond amazed how strong this young man is. Years of gaining friendships, socialization and growth as a human being have been have taken from him with having to ride a separate bus. Years after the ADA has passed to make accessibility available for all, school busses have completely failed our children. Im glad his father has stood up for him and has not backed down to make sure he has the experience that every student deserves.

Amanda, you have restored my faith in humanity!!! I have always been so outraged at everything on its face alone..
First, segregated on basis of disability transportation systems.
One system is a little one with special education buses and only let people in wheelchairs use the lift.
The other bus system is the largest but only usable by those able to board by the stairwell, our good old iconic school buses. Some things never changed from when I started kindergarten in 1959 to when Alex started in 2013. Segregation in education and inaccessible school buses would not even have been on the list were I not Alex's father.
