    just finished this book (loved it btw), and in an interview Kristoff said “oh there’s a ton of people who absolutely HATE Nevernight”, so I went as curious as I am and looked some of those hateful reviews and god! I’m not gonna tell about it, but now in the middle of my search by watching your video I want to say thank you for way of telling things, objectively, peaceful most of all, and showing your love of books and reading. Thanks again

    i think this book has a really niche target audience and the fact that its so hyped contributes to so many people being disappointed. for me, nevernight is basically everything i love in a story.

      I’m glad you enjoyed it so much! To respond to your previous comment, idk if I had a ton more to say necessarily. Nevernight is just-like you said-going to hit a certain niche target audience, and I’m not quite sure I was that audience. I didn’t dislike it by any means, I just didn’t personally find myself really in love with it. I’m still planning on reading the sequel though!

    I agree. His writing is very eccentric in this book, which did get annoying for me personally because I felt it kept me at arms length from really connecting to the story. I did put it down because it was taking me a long time to read each page. I’ll pick it up when I’m in a better mind set.

    How is no one talking about the setting? I don't know if that's just me as a history nerd, but I loved how obviously it was inspired by the Roman Republic, and every time I could draw a comparison to actual history it was like a delightful little treat.

    When I first heard of the footnotes in Nevernight, I immediately thought of the Bartimaeus trilogy. I listened to the audiobooks of Bartimaeus and the footnotes were worked in seamlessly. In fact, I didn't know they were footnotes until I saw a physical copy. Because of that, I've wondered if the audiobook of Nevernight would work well the footnotes. I intend to try and see if it does.

    After reading Empire of the Vampire, which I loved, I had to keep going with this author. I equally loved Nevernight. Wow,, i felt very connected to the characters and found myself extremely immersed in the world. I did feel like the footnotes however took me out of the story a bit. If felt like commercials during a good show. But i soon found myself going with the flow of them and overall felt they added to the world building.

    Elliot you just sold me on this book even more. I kinda like that it has this straight to the point approach & the fact that his has a dark gritty theme to it. I actually don't mind it if the author breaks the 3rd wall with sidenotes as long as it makes sense & is entertaining. My main concern will be how the book is written as how the paragraphs look. It has to be easy for me to comprehend. So I'll be looking for that first in person at barnes and noble before buying. This review tho is 🏆 winning in detail. I'm having a weird experience with it, bc I've had the book for awhile but I didn't get around to reading it bc I'm weak when it comes to blood and gore and I've been hearing it's pretty dark so I was hesitant for what I was going to be in for. I also tend to procrastinate books that I hype up in my head, in case I end up disappointed,but I ended up watching Piera Forde's mini series first and that hyped me up even more bc I was so excited for her to see her dream come to life (I've been following her channel for awhile) and I wanted more context so I could understand the mini series better and hopefully also fall in love with the story, so I picked up the book and I'm loving it! At first I was a bit confused about what was going on but between the book and mini series I pieced it together and now I'm really enjoying it. I love the almost satirical, humourous writing style like you pointed out! I laughed so hard at the library "smoking" scene 😂 I also love the aspects of the darkness and Mia's abilities with shadows; so fascinating! I am hooked lol

The darkness and subsequent humor became too much for me in book two, however, and I won’t be continuing. Took me after 100 pages when the footnotes died down a little before I was invested. That was also around the time it takes to get used to his writing.
    You have to realize the footnotes aren't important to enjoy it.
    Character wise, I love them and I find them all interesting with hidden agendas or pasts that I don't mind knowing more. The world building was perfect, very vivid and the grim dark was exactly what I wanted and do not mind at all. I was attempting to read Between Two Fires a while ago, and Nevernight feels like the exact opposite in its execution. Both have a very dark setting, but Buehlman fails at having a grimdark setting with an injection of humour while Kristoff mostly succeeds. Astonishingly enough. Nevernight feels a lot like Pratchett if Pratchett tried his hand at a rather crass, unforgiving setting while giving the reader something to grin about every now and then.
    And I quickly realised that dismissing his writing as overly purple is a mistake. It's a bit purple at times... but it's not overdone.

  • @aleksandragieralt7370
    @aleksandragieralt7370 5 лет назад

    I have a question - is there a difference between dark and grimdark? I always thought "grimdark" was a derogatory term for stories that have gratuitous violence and a nihilistic outlook while "dark" refers to themes and may but doesn't necessarily contain graphic violence. I was under the impression that a high-quality dark story may have more violence/descriptions thereof than a grimdark one but when/if it arised, it serves the plot or theme. I often see "dark" being used to compliment a work and "grimdark" to dismiss it. But recently I heard "dark" and "grimdark" used interchangeably . . .

    • @ebnovels
      @ebnovels  5 лет назад +1

      I’ll admit I probably use them a little more interchangeably, but dark-from what I understand-means the setting itself is dark, or dark themes are explored, but maybe the characters are still overall pretty good, or the book isn’t as bleak. Grimdark is more like Game of Thrones, where you tend to see the darker themes embedded in the characters themselves, and the descriptions of bad things can be more detailed. From what I’ve gathered, the terms are still being defined, so I apologize if how I use them is ever confusing! 💗

    I finally got through this a couple of weeks ago when I did a buddy read. It was ok; I think it starts to get much better towards the end (part 3). This was the first fiction book that I read that had footnotes, and I hated that part. I could have done without the footnotes. I didn't really connect with the characters either. I connected with Mia a little, but the only character I really liked/cared about was her cat, Mr. Kindly. He was funny. I also didn't like all the metaphors he'd use; it got to be too much. The ending was interesting enough to make me want to continue with the series. Overall, I'm kind of in the middle with this. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it.

      Hahaha, hi! And that’s awesome! I’ll admit that I’m not vegan, but I try to eat vegan when I can. I’ll have to check that out :D

    I didn’t really like this book. I was so interested in the premise but I hated the writing it was so eccentric and ridiculous that it became annoying and the footnotes just really takes you out of the story and makes it hard to follow.The beginning was really boring and I don’t think I cared much for the characters. I liked the fact that it was dark and brutal bc not many assassin school stories don’t really deliver the grit you would expect. The ending redeemed a bit of the book for me but I’m not sure I really care enough to continue unless I’m convinced otherwise.

      That’s fair. I didn’t love the book necessarily, just because I’m a really character driven reader and didn’t connect all that much with Mia. I appreciate the author’s writing style and respect it for what it is, but I’m kinda basic when it comes to the way I like my stories told 💁🏻‍♀️ I’ll pick up the next one though, to see if maybe I’ll connect more with characters then :)

    So, this isn't YA? Goodreads has it listed as YA for some reason.

      Oh man, definitely not. It’s quite violent, and the sexual content is extremely explicit.

      Also, the author has stated before that it’s not YA! Hopefully that helps ❤️

      @@ebnovels Thanks! It seemed strange that it was listed as YA. Goodreads needs to fix that.

      This is a late reply but I literally just picked up this book from the young adult section after quickly glancing over the description and this is not at all what I expected. I can handle the violence and gore but the smut is not what I wanted for my age lol idk if I can finish it!

    I thought the first book was good, the second book was awesome, and the third book was so bad I couldn’t finish it. The romantic plot line ruined it for me. I felt like it took away from the rest of the story.

      I’m sorry to hear that! I didn’t really connect with the story, but I’m wanting to eventually pick up the sequel. Maybe I’ll feel differently after being with the characters for longer 😮

      @@ebnovels I probably will pick up the second book at some point too. I liked the story and characters, it was really just the writing style that I couldn't get on with

    Wow this book is almost exclusively reviewed by women on Goodreads.... Is there any reason for that?

    • @ebnovels
      @ebnovels  5 лет назад

      I’d be guessing, but possibly because the protagonist is a girl and Jay Kristoff also writes YA. Sometimes those things can be deterrents for certain men, but not all of course, so I’m not sure 😮

      Let me know what you think of Kingkiller. I do think the prose are beautiful, but the set up isn’t my favorite, and I personally didn’t really connect with Kvothe. Nevernight is definitely very eccentric, and there is some explicit content, but the story is very unique.

    I found the similes and metaphors excruciatingly bad. It never occurred to me that the book "wasn't taking itself too seriously". Either way, it was a poor read for me. DNF.

    I stopped reading the footnotes like halfway thru. I hated them with a burning passion! Such useless information and would take me out of the story for like huuuuge paragraphs of BS

      Haha, idk that I consider it BS, but I get what you’re saying. Some readers love that kind of stuff; I think it’s just a matter of preference :)
