You never know how Hollywood execs will act. When Sophia Di Martino was cast as Sylvie on Loki she was 9 months pregnant and the producers had the costuming department design a special outfit for her to allow her to nurse easily between takes. And on the other hand you have Joss Whedon firebombing Charisma Carpenter's career as the other poster mentioned.

Look how Charisma Carpenter was treated on the set of Angel when she was pregnant, Joss Whedon took it personally, ruined her character completely in season 4 (I think out of spite) and then fired her before season 5. Hollywood is gross.

That's not what happened. The season was going to be very Cordelia focused so they asked her if she was planning on getting pregnant so they'd account for it when they wrote. She lied and said no, then told them she was pregnant right before shooting which made them have to rewrite the entire thing on short notice which led to the worst season of the show. Sevrral people that worked on the show has talked about how she fucked them over with that.

@@LatexNecronomiconThe fuck. Did she plan on getting pregnant? I don't think she planned it. It just happened, cause that's life. She could have been on birth control and all and still gotten pregnant.

That has always confounded me, because even if you're a POS that's angry about an actress' pregnancy screwing up your storyline. If you care about your storyline, you'd think you wouldn't screw it up because she got pregnant. The sane way to deal with an actress getting pregnant is to say "Blah blah blah, she's got to do a mission off-screen for as long as it takes for the actress to return to filming" then when she's ready to return to work, you just resume her storyline as normal.

I remember watching that season and before she was showing I just somehow knew she was pregnant and I was hoping everything went well and the studio was not being jerks about it. Also its gross that someone said that to you. Its disgusting that someone said that too you and think that is an acceptable thing to say to someone the lack of empathy is shocking.

When I told, my boss said that I should get ‘rid of it’ because we were finally about to be financially stable (small family owned business). I didn’t even know what to say. It wasn’t a planned pregnancy but still. Then I had to go on bed rest and it was like they had never met me. I worked there for six years. No response to the baby announcement and the only contact was a complaint from my replacement about how I had done the taxes the year before. People in all industries have forgotten how to treat others.

I loved her in The Listener.
I don't think I have come across any interview where she gives her opinion of her character going off epilepsy meds just to allow herself to be read/strengthen a relationship.
Did she see it as a negative influence or more like delaying chemo so a wedding isn't ruined?

It easily makes sense, from a pragmatic standpoint, that film/tv companies wouldn't want the plans altered by an unexpected pregnancy to one of the main characters. It's money and time lost potentially.
Still wild that the exec said that to her though.

    • @jfess1911
      @jfess1911 22 дня назад +5

I wonder how the topic came up in the first place? At the very least, the exec could have been more sympathetic along the lines of "I am sorry if this has made any plans for a family with children more difficult, but, as you know, in this industry there is an unfortunate advantage ......" Are they allowed to ask if someone is planning on becoming pregnant during the production run?
I now curious to find out if production insurance rates increase for shows with main characters who can still become pregnant?

There are ways to work with costuming and the writers when one is pregnant. It depends on the character, I suspect, but it shows a lack of imagination and understanding.

    • @jfess1911

@@stephaniebarrows5428 I vaguely recall some TV series where the character had to "go out of town" and was just shown from the shoulders up making telephone calls back the family.
In another (Leverage), where the character played by Gina Bellman was a grifter that typically had a lot of face-to-face interactions with her marks, she went out of town but had a friend, played by Jeri Ryan, take her place on the team for most of the season.

Is it common for shows to have pre-prepared contingency plans to work around leading characters becoming pregnant, or is it just "we'll deal with it if it happens".

My case isn't so much medical reason versus that's how i came off the assembly line. I've imagined what it would be like over my life... but you don't really think about it once you live a few decades. You just live with it 🤷‍♂️

This is kind of whats wrong with america the fact that she felt like she had to hide the pregnancy at first... and the whole Charisma thing was really her own fault she was suppose to be a big part of the focus of that season and she then decided to get pregnant and scew over and waste alot of peoples time and money... Did they maybe take it too far? Sure but she did decide to get pregnant and ruin it for the rest of the crew....

Sometimes pregnancy happens no matter what women do. Even with birth controls, IUDs there are reported cases of pregnancy. Babies come when they want. It's not like she can just not have sex for until the entire show is done. Many shows come up with contingency plans in case female cast get pregnant. They don't have to ruin an actor's career just because she is going to be a mother.

    • @crystald3655

We don't know what Charisma's home life was like. Sex may not have been a choice for her. I doubt she chose to become pregnant at the worst possible time for her career, but it happened, so she had to make it work. Joss could not have been a dick about it.
