This was what kinda broke the story for me too. At no point does the patient consider making their own meal when the problem starts, and what do they do in the evenings when they go home after work? If anything this would make the paranoia more palpable because while the pre-made food can be put down to pranks or accidents having this happen to something you'd prepared with your own hands would be twice as horrifying.
