Love the channel, the Australorp was a good choice. There are four breeds that I believe you can't go wrong with; RIR, barred rocks, australorps, and buff orpingtons. Also wanted to say your set-up is amazing
Hello Pete. Can't wait to see the 30 chickens you've ordered. The coup looks great, inside and out. A very attractive shed to have on your property. See you soon.
Thanks for being You Pete! We love your right to the point ways and enjoy watching your projects. We are in the middle of our own coup build and are learning from your videos. Much appreciated! Keep up the Excellent Work!
Thanks for all the great coop set up information! We have Barred Rock and Black Australorp chickens in our small flock. We love the Australorps, they are a very friendly chicken. We will be going to all that kind for our next flock. I have heard about the hawks not liking crows and I wasn’t sure I believed it, but as I was driving one day I saw three crows chasing a hawk away from some dead animal in the field. I know that is true now from seeing it with my own eyes.
I went with Hoover's Hatchery... Very out of state for us. They were shipped today and we were given an email saying they would be at the post office in 72 hours. We also got the black australorps and also buff orpingtons because I wanted a good brooder. Hoover's had a minimum order of 5 roosters...couldn't buy any less than that. But that is ok. Roosters protect against predators.
Nice setup Pete. You don't need to have all black chickens 🤣. I have one black rooster and one bantam chicken who likes to have her own space and keeps away from the other hens and ten golden comets and have never had a hawk problem. I have a premier one fence all around them and my coop door is left ajar because I like to sleep in. I've heard cats dogs and other critters hit the fence and yipe away but never had a hawk problem although there are lots where I live. I didn't want a rooster but I'm sure glad I have George my rooster. I've ordered more chicks because I also have a rooster named Henry 😆 I'm needing another coop now and have built the first one I drag around made from pvc and vinyl siding. It's worked well so far. Good luck on your new setup. Having chickens is a wonderful experience in my mind👍
Hello . as I said in a comment last year. order such a cheap camouflage net in front of your chicken free-roaming area then they can no longer attack from the air and there is also a good chance that they will not even see / find the chickens that easily due to the camouflage net. and those camouflage nets on sites like Wish.com cost very little. if you order one now, you will have it inside before your existing chickens can go outside. Thanks fot the video. Stay Safe and Healthy. kind regards Hollandduck from the Netherlands in a hard Lockdown and curfew. ( source of translation : Google translate )
A second heat source is a good idea. Thirty chicks will huddle up close to the heat. Extra heat will reduce the risk of loss due to them piling up on top of each other. Excellent home for your birds. Great choice of breed as well. Good luck. Hope your coup is snake proof as well.
Great conversion job! The girls will be living in style! I'm curious to know how the black chickens do though I doubt you want to sacrifice one to check the theory.
I drove 2 hours one way to pick up my baby chicks. Had great customer service. I ordered 24. But since it was a Friday they asked if I'd like a few extra at no charge.
Australops are duel purpose birds the live weigh of Roosters in about 9 1/2 lbs so don't worry about having too many Roosters freezer camp for the spare ones
Great job on the new coop Pete , did not know that bit of information about hawks and crows so I will be curious to see how well your choice of black australorps works out. Supposed to have a pretty strong cold snap moving into East TX end of this week so hopefully by the time your chicks arrive that is behind us. Have you started on your spring garden yet? I have onions and potatoes in so far. Please keep us posted.
Black birds are not good in Texas heat! Good luck with them! We buy local FROM Texas hatchery in Camden Texas called Ideal hatchery, oldest hatchery in the USA.
I have gotten 38 birds, 5 batches since 2012. Only 1 "oops" rooster. The first batch of 12 was from Ideal, the 2 Australorps were good hens though one was broody. That isn't a bad thing for you since you apparently intend to have chicks hatching at your place (no other reason to get a rooster).
you don't need the temperature and heat control. The chicks will do it themselves. Just hang a light if they get cold they get closer, if they get hot they move away.
Thank you, we did well, we have solar power and a nice wood stove that kept us warm. Our chicks have been postponed until March 3 because of the recent weather events.
@@petebeasttexashomesteading My supplier sent an email stating Mother Nature "fowled" my order and the earliest they'll arrive is the 1st week of April around Easter. I imagine you've gotten yours by now.I hope they all arrived in good health and are doing fine!I love your new coop you built!Congratulations on choosing "black" chickens so the hawks will not attack them.I hope it works because I know how much you love your chickens.
Hey Pete. Good stuff buddy. Interesting about the black birds. I'm in the process of starting our chickens but I wanted to go with a dual purpose bird and that research led me to the Barred Rock. For the same reason as you I was hoping the Barred Rocks darker almost camouflaged appearance would help with predators because we have them here as well. Got a question though, for my purposes I was going to go with a build much like your first coop. Is there a particular reason you decided to build the new coop? Did the first one lack something you didn't initially think of? Thanks.
The ceramic heat emitter works great. There's a temperature sensor from the inkbird that sits under the heat emitter that controls the heat but it should be about 12 inches away with a 250w emitter.
Hi Pete - I’m trying to do a shed to coop conversion too. I was hoping you could help me with letting me know the distance from the wall out to each roost on your roosting area and did you use 2 by 4 for each of the roost bars?
Here's the video I did on the roosting bars. ruclips.net/video/KtGYIMDG2ho/видео.html the distance from the back wall to the front of the top roosting bar is 12 inches. The distance from the back wall to the front of the middle roosting bar is 22 inches. The distance from the back wall to the front of the bottom roost bar is 32 inches. I hope this helps.
Recommend that you put vinnal (?) Linoleum flooring down , makes cleaning up easeier . Check out Cog Hill Farm on u tube and the chicken house they built. Good idea for the black chicken s , Have a blessed day.🐓🐓🐓🐓
@@petebeasttexashomesteading sorry I must have missed that one, have not received any notification for a couple of days and did not go Back & catch up. The coop is well done. Thanks for responding , God bless
australorps are great foragers. you were right to get a rooster or two. they watch the skies while the girls are eating. wish you would hang your water in brooder. it stays way cleaner if you do. worst possible time to get chicks. sry
When I die I want to come back as a chicken and live at Pete B’s place. Nice job on new coop!
I've seen people put a goose in with there chickens as protection against hawk's and it works well. 👍
It's a beautiful Coupe you have enough room in there for a hundred chickens
Love the coop. You won't be disappointed with the Australorp.
Thank you

I might suggest that you install sheet vinyl for your floor, it makes cleaning so much easier. Your coop house looks good.
Real nice coop man. Cool channel as well

All chickens are dual purpose, LOL. 😊 They are all meat chickens too.

Thanks, have onions and garlic growing. I will start my seedlings in the house this week and will have my potatoes in the ground next week.
Looks great in there Pete. I'm wondering if there are any heat / odor vents in there. Can't wait to see the new chicks. 👍👍💚🐣🐣🐣🐣

it would be great if you post a vaccination/feed/weight routine for the chicks! Goodluck.
I would order all hens and then adopt roosters if you end up lucking out with all hens in your order!

The first coop was just too small and I really didn't feel like building another one so I found this 10'x20' repo for a good price.
How well do those ceramic heat lamps work, how far of a distance so they heat, or what else do you recommend? Thanks!

Get some Chinese black - boned chicken, it is also medicinal and delicious.
Just go to tractor supply and get a chick. It's bound to be a 🐓🤣
You could always give away some of the roosters.I mean giving is better than receiving right? worst case scenario ya can eat em! 😁
Great video 👌 How many weeks until your female australorps are ready to lay?
Thanks, they will start laying eggs at around 16 to 17 weeks old.
Build that room in your coop.. if you don't later on you will wish you had..
I just might do that 👍
It's a chicken house, right?
Yep it's a 10ft x 20ft shed to coop conversion.
One person on RUclips had a goose try to kill the rooster and breed with the chickens
