    Benefits of soy is greater for women with early childhood soy consumption. One of the fist foods that Japanese babies are introduced to are soft tofu and soy milk. Most Japanese, especially those who live in eastern part of Japan (like Tokyo), eat natto every day for breakfast. Many still have miso soup with tofu and seaweed for breakfast and at dinner too. They eat soy throughout the day; for instance there might be okara (soy pulp) in lunch salad or even baked goods, also yuba skin is very popular. Japanese women still consume a lot of soy milk because soy milk is considered a "skin food" that would keep skin younger and more supple. How did they get nutritional information such as this? In Japan they have Shokuiku, which is nutrition education in public schools.
    Early childhood and regular soy consumption are partly why in Japan and parts of east Asia the breast cancer rates are so low. Although recent years the rates of breast cancer in Japan is trending up due to increased dairy and meat consumption. Now when I go back to Japan I find it hard to eat out as vegan, much harder than here actually in terms of variety. For example even so-called vegetarian dishes there contain things seafood or meat stock.

    I just had a test come back with high estrogen level and I am post menopausal. My doctor asked if I was consuming a lot of soy. This is contrary to anything I've seen before. Is it not true that it also depends on the form and type of soy? GMO soy is sprayed with roundup, a known hormone disruptor. The Japanese mainly eat fermented soy.

    • @backspace7124

      You can buy organic and non-GMO soy; these products will be labelled as such, voluntarily by companies knowing there's a demand for these things. My worry is more that organic fields can be contaminated by neighbouring GMO fields (for any GMO crop, not just soy; organic corn can be contaminated by GMO corn, etc.). We still consume these (soy, corn), but maybe less on account of this. It's terrible, what's happening to the world, to our food... More crops to be modified in the coming future (apples, potatoes, etc.). So long as it's only a minority of us that care enough to not buy anything supporting GMOs, we won't have any say in the matter.

    Also for me as a great fan of fitness and natural bodybuilding. In these sports the majority of people think they must avoid soy, because they fear their oestrogen level could explode. These facts show, that exactly the opposite happens. So thanks for this one!

    I am a 52 year old women who recently had stage 1 estrogen driven breast tumor removed by lumpectomy. My margins are clean and cancer has not moved to lymph nodes. I have no doubt that my diet and lifestyle choices in my past did nothing to deter my cancer from progressing. I have been vegan for 15 years but now eating an organic whole food plant based diet and leading a healthy lifestyle ie no alcohol, meditation, yoga, walking every day (which I've always done), trying to maintain my weight within the normal BMI range and limiting stress.I do everything that Dr Greger suggests re eating soy, mushrooms, broccoli sprouts, cruciferous veggies. Although I have posted the same question in other channels before, I am yet to recieve interpretations. Can topical application on breasts really trigger breast cancer? • @backspace7124
      @backspace7124 7 лет назад +2

      Probably not. Nutrition is far more complex than we realize, and it's not uncommon for foods to have very different effects depending on so many factors. Soy in particular seems to have both anti-estrogenic and pro-estrogenic effects, depending on such a host of factors. What's encouraging is that the research so far seems to have shown that whatever effect is occurring, it seems beneficial to the host; i.e. the pro-estrogenic effects observed are beneficial to the consumer, and the anti-estrogenic effects as well. In other words, it won't lower or raise your estrogen in a way that has bad health effects. This is all assuming normal consumption levels, of course, not getting half your daily calories from soy or anything extreme like that.

      I was recently diagnosed with PCOS and have started taking an estradiol birth control. Do you think if I ate a lot of soy it would interfere with my hormones too much? I feel like I shouldn't block the estrogen since I don't have enough of it already, and I need it to balance out the androgen, right? I'm wondering about the gluten too, and also the whole complex/simple carbs situation. It astonishes me how almost no one knows what PCOS is unless they have it or know someone who has it, but it's so common and affects so many women. We need more education on it. That's the issue which brings me back to my original comment, how do we really know it's OK to ingest? You have to trust the organic symbol which I don't always. Organic is not foolproof especially with soy and corn.
