Unironically it probably is for them. Russians really have gotten screwed. They had a damn revolution to overthrow the czars, only for Stalin to take over just a few years in and kill even more civilians...then Stalin dies, they try their best to move away from him but the whole has been falling apart, people are in poverty and the end is near... must have been brutal, a story of 3 generations of suffering. Ironically it's still pretty bad, the economic woes and the authoritarianism came back pretty fast all things considered.

As an Afghan, I appreciate the Soviet Union for trying to help defend my country against the Western-backed Mujahideen (even though the Soviets lost in the end). Afghanistan under Communism along with Soviet assistance was a million times better than both the Taliban regime and the Western-backed "democratic" regime of 2001-21.

also i read somewhere before Soviet forces went into afganistan there was basically no infrastructure, no roads, people used to live in mudhuts (many still do i know)

Gorbachev had realized that the Soviet economy could not continue to be 100% state-owned. The market economy had to be implemented step by step to prevent the collapse.

It played like as if the anthem was worn out and needed to rest, much like a burnt record, it eventually becomes replaced and forever played in the past─ everyone in that moment knew that during the turn of the 20th century, it was completely out of date, communism had not been achieved but this is as far as humanity had seen it go forward and it deserved the farewell it received.
This is a strong country that could even beat Germany back to go to Berlin.

I am originally from Pakistan and you might be happy to know the people there still hate Yahya Khan and the army managed to suppress the history to such an extent that I didn't know about the genocide they were doing in East Pakistan until I came to the US. Our history books even omit what Ayub Khan was doing in 1965. The Pakistani people are not your enemy and the Indians are not our enemy. That said what Modi is doing today in Kashmir is a more sophisticated version what monsters like Yahya Khan were doing back then in East Pakistan and he is able to use people like Akshay Kumar to whitewash it.
