    Started Gardening after a heart attack......to keep me Mobile and moving, instead of sitting and worrying. Feeling Fit, and mastered Tomato, Cucumber, Zucchini, and Flowers for Hanging Baskets to keep Wifey Happy. Got Lettuce going this year, so now I'm on to Herbs. I always recycle my green onion bulbs from the store.....but Shallots are always a treat, and as a formally trained Chef.....I should be growing these, so Thank you for all your info........it will be the New star in Next Years Garden......you are All Aces for this share!😉

    This is the first year I'm growing shallots. They're looking beautiful. I love smelling them when in my garden. I decided to plant them instead of onions this year because there not a strong tasting. I watched your video to determine when, and how to harvest the shallots.

      I'm growing shallots more and more, they take a little less space too and you can replant a bulb to keep them going

    Super video. I particularly appreciate you showing the whole growing season and giving the week counter. How late can I plant shallots? I’m asking this question in mid-March in southern England.

      Thank you, that's very kind. March should still be fine. I'm south England too and have sown sets right up to the start of April

      I am from Belgium, so somewhat similar climate, I plant them now (mid april). This might be a bit late, but it will still work.

    Hi from New Zealand! I was searching for how to grow shallots as I planted some id got from the supermarket in late winter. I harvested today but mine are nothing like your ones? Mine are huge like bib onions but still have cloves like shallots. They are also nothing like the bulbs I planted and the leaves were not like yours either. They were tall like onions but I think even taller than onions grow. I don’t know anyone here who has grown them - I live in the South Island near the bottom so we get cold winters and not super hot summers - 20C average. I just don’t know what I’ve grown as the bulbs I planted looked like shallots but these don’t. Can you help? Thanks Lynne NZ

      Overwintering is best but you can still plant them now. I planted a row just yesterday 👍

      One bulb can divide into between 6 and 10 I've found. I usually keep one aside to replant 👍

    Thank you for your video. This is my first time growing shallots in the winter. I live in the north part of USA. Could you share what outdoor temprature is best to start shallots?? I will probably need to start earlier than Decemeber. What do you advise? Thank you!

      US growing regions aren't my strong area and I really don't want to give you bad advice. Is there anyone here who lives in the same growing range who can offer this advice please?? Have a lovely week ☀️

      @@AThornyPot What is the temperature range outside that you know is a good time for you to plant?

    • @AThornyPot
      @AThornyPot  2 месяца назад +1

      So in spring, in the UK the average is between 10°C and 14°C, in autumn it's roughly the same, a touch warmer maybe, these are good times for us to plant Shallots

    Very informative video, thank you so much. I have a question concerning the seedpods you mentioned. What would happen if you didn't cut them off and is there anything they can be used for?

    • @AThornyPot
      @AThornyPot  2 года назад +1

      The seed pods would grow the seeds, taking energy away from the bulb. I believe you can cut off the pods and cook them... you can also still harvest them, even if they flower but I don't think they're as tasty
