I enjoy all you guys videos, including this one. I would like to see a different type of video however. One that goes into detail about how Tolkien has influenced other movies, books, writers, shows ect... To me, his writing has reached far further that most realize, even us Tolkien nerds.
Keep up the great work guys!
I thought this was very good and I am happy to see this facet of Sauron's power more fully explained- finally. Sauron was a master of both realms at once because he was the greatest sorcerer in Arda, next to Morgoth. He did not need the Ring to be invisible, he could do that already. He was the maker of the Ring than made others go invisible, against their will even. So, he is the master of invisibility as a magic power. For example, the Nazgul without their robes were invisible (Witch King- ...'"but upon no visible head was his crown set..."). If this is the case (Tolkien canon), then Sauron could be invisible at will- or not. Indeed Sauron had part of his essence in the Ring, in actuality, it contained 33.3% of his essence. Why? Because before the Ring was made Sauron was 8' tall in Arda in human form and after the Ring (in battle) he was 12 feet (not 10) because Tolkien says Sauron was twice the height of men of that day (that day being 3rd age men of 6 foot average). Therefore, Sauron is 12 feet, and the movie has him clearly set at 12 feet by analysis of angle and height estimations. (He was also 1,440 lbs and carried a 8 foot- 71lb mace...via square-cubed expansion law). Thus, his amplification was 1.5 times after the Ring was made and worn. This means, mathematically, Sauron's Ring is a 1.5x power amplifier = 33.3% of his essence is in the Ring. Lastly, Sauron didn't think he needed to be invisible in the Battle of the Last Alliance where he smacks all those soldiers around. When he is visible- he casts a 60th level Fear spell on everyone that sees him, rendering them incapacitated and crapping their pants. This is Sauron's style, and we see this same terror on the face of Saruman when he sees him and also when anyone sees the Nazgul...same concept. This is why he was visible while obviously in both planes, the seen and unseen worlds... Terror. Good Video. I love canon and lore competency.

Why didn't he just pick the ring back up with his other hand
I've been digging your tokens videos although I just listen to them I enjoy your voice the way that you present the Tolkien universe I think it'd be cool if you did some other stuff although depends on what you're into it across is over into do but no matter what this channel is awesome
@@jamescarter8693 bro, you need to learn how to structure a sentence! This sounds like, 1, your in love, and 2, your drunk, either way, try again please! They do great at tolkien related subjects! Let's let them do that instead of whatever fantasy you have in mind🤷
Still nothing in cinema like Sauron slowly walking at near ten feet tall, men and elves staring in horror, then Sauron starts swinging that giant mace sending dozens of warriors flying at a time! EPIC!!!
I always found that especially terrifying. Dude is a mountain!
Yeah the entire trilogy really. And I knew it when I was watching it. Wish they’d get their act together and make stuff like this again
Then Sauron takes his helmet off: it’s Halbrand
The invisibility the One Ring gives wearers is an unintended side effect.
Sauron never intended anyone else to have the Ring and never gave thought to what it would do to others.
11:13 What's interesting about the the Three Rings was that the rings themselves seemed to be invisible when worn. Frodo could see Galadriel's ring only because he possessed the One Ring, but Sam was unable to see it. Presumably the other two were also invisible to ordinary people since we don't see them on Gandalf and Elrond until at the end when they have lost their powers.
That could have been due to the user's intent or something like that
There's a line in the Lord of Rings in which Bilbo tells Gandalf that “I feel thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread.” The ring Does not improve on life or even make life last forever It just thins life out so that you become somewhere between dead and and living
I’d love a video comparing the council of Elrond book vs movie
"And yet, to have come so far, still bearing the Ring, the Hobbit has shown extraordinary resilience to its evil." -- Elrond
In the books Sam carried the one ring for about two days, and even put in on a few times to hide from Orcs... but gave freely back to Frodo.
Slightly reluctantly, but with a full heart.
Yup! Pure of heart, but I’m not sure he could make the full journey as Frodo had.
Tolkien always good at making you wonder what if, though.
@@ryanquinn1257 That's true. We will always wonder. But, he was more stout of heart than Frodo was, just not as smart. I do wonder why Tolkien made Frodo the Ring Bearer instead of Samwise. It's quite interesting.
@@mordechai- i think frodo and sam might have been tolkens two sides frodo his ww1 solder side with some ptsd and sam wise the family man and writer so to be happy with his family hes have to let go of his solder side much like how all the fantastic middle earth being get shipped off
@@thewildcardperson Interesting theory. I like it.
Right! Where are we going?
I always felt that the One Ring turned the wearer invisible not as a power, but out of a desire to be found and returned to Sauron. We all know that when Sauron created the One Ring, he put into the ring a portion of his own essence. So, the ring is a part of Sauron. I have always felt that the Ring turns the wearer invisible (aka, takes them into the spirit world) where the Nazgul, and other powerful spirits (including Sauron himself as a spiritual entity) can see the wearer clearly. The reason I do not think that the One Ring turns Sauron invisible has nothing to do with the power of the ring, but rather the power of Sauron. With the Ring, Sauron is whole, complete, and can travel between both worlds at will as he wishes. The ring does not have a desire to force Sauron into the spirit realm because the ring on Sauron's hand is where it wants to be, as one with Sauron, what was sundered and undone are now whole, the two made one.
This is also why I think that Tom Bombadil was not affected by the ring's powers. Because, as Gandalf states, Tom Bombadil is his own master; the ring has no power over him. This tells me that turning invisible was not a power that was granted by the ring, but rather the will of the ring to be found. a trap.
Right! Where are we going?
Also, like to say thank you for making such detailed videos! Always look forward to them.
TLDR: The Ring makes you invisible by pulling you into the Unseen Realm. However, Sauron always exists partially in the Unseen Realm and in the physical world, so he can't make himself invisibile.
Might that also be why it has no effect on Tom Bombadil?
@@Muyshtic nope the ring just doesn't have an effect on or power over tom. He just doesn't care about the ring.
He can make himself invisible, he just doesn’t need the ring to do so, and the ring doesn’t force him to be invisible. He does it at will
@@jennyc3919 When have we ever seen Sauron turn invisible in the texts? He's changed forms many times, but I don't recall him ever being invisible.
@@bradylewis9698 yeah, pretty sure the broken shills just made that one up. Maybe that was an Amazon idea.
I think in a lot of ways Fëanor is the greatest villain. Crafting the first weapons. Threatening his already loyal brother. Making and having his sons swearing the oath of Fëanor. Committing the first kin slaying. Oh.. and refusing to allow the valar to rekindle the light of the two trees perhaps with the simirils. And being the one mortal being who lead to so much death and horrors throughout all the ages.
I feel like I should tell you thank you for your work.

Thank you.

Great video guys as all ways 😎🎉💯.
Another amazing video. The best middle earth channel out there.
The greatest of compliments 👏💚
The way I see it, the one ring isn't an invisibility ring, it just gives the user abilities they need as they need them, as well as potentially just enhancing their natural ability. Bilbo was hired as a burglar who needed stealth more than anything for every situation, so the ring made him invisible. Frodo was trying to sneak to Bree and later to Mt Doom, so he needed to walk unseen. Sauron wanted to be seen by all and used the ring just to enhance his natural strength, will and ability to manipulate mortals. What the ring actually does is super vague and up to interpretation, it's good fun to discuss.
Excellent video 👌
Thank you so much! 💚
Let me preface this by saying I know I'm wrong with the following theory; the explanation in this video is correct one. But, I like to speculate.
But, I always interpreted it like this; The One Ring was built as a tool to give the supernatural ability to command and dominate the will of others,
and Hobbits, who are not warriors or commanders by nature; when they put it on they're thinking (even possibly subconsciously) "Don't see me."
I always interpreted it as more of like a Jedi mind trick. But, ultimately the ring is still the master, so the mind trick failed to work on the Nazgul who were following Sauron's will to bring the ring home to him.
Bilbo was always the king of introverts, so he wanted nothing more but to hide until unwanted guests went away(I think this is probably how most hobbits are wired - unconfrontational.) But I wonder if Bilbo or Frodo had more of an interest in leadership, how would they have used the ring differently? Even Smeagol, who was more selfish, still acquired what he wanted mostly through stealth and opportunity rather than outright command.
I always thought that the ring consciously wanted Boromir to take it, because if Boromir got the ring, it's game over for the Free Peoples. Boromir would have already had command over the Gondorian army, and using the ring's power to twist that army to Sauron's agenda would have been really easy for him to do.
So, back to the point, when Sauron wore the ring, he had no reason to become invisible, but he could have "commanded" people to ignore him if he wanted to. Because Sauron was so ego driven, maybe he never even considered being unseen?
Just food for thought. Don't take anything I say too seriously. Great video, as always.
Right where are we going please 🥺
Keep up the great work
Right where are we going?
Anything on Tom Bombadil is cool. Can't believe they excluded him from the movie
I can, Tom doesn't serve much of a narrative purpose and is primarily there as world building.
A question about the nature of maia and their ability to chance their shape in the seen world. After the fall of numenor, he is unable to take a fair form. Is this due to the tangible aspect of that form being broken or is it more of a symbolic prohibition against it after causing the downfall of a great people but also being loss during it. And in the same vein. Would his vampiric form also still have the wounds given by the great hound or his dark lord form missing fingers?
Gollum stated the Dark Lord was missing a finger.
When Sauron made the ring he put much of his power into the ring so he could dominate the holders of the other rings. He put the ring aside when he had to surrender to the Numenorean navy. When his spirit came back he couldn't take up his fair form again because much of him was in the ring and when it was destroyed his physical form was too.
I have never thought to ask this
right... where are we going?
( mordor gandalf, left or right...? )
Always follow your nose.
Another thing (in no way to dispute your points rather to add to it)
Sauron is the only one who has any mastery over the ring's powers, whereas for any other ringbearer it only does what it needs to to protect them if only out of the ring's own self survival... and this in most cases manifests as turning them invisible, giving them super strength or other magic powers may help them, but also put a target on them, whereas turning invisible means avoiding conflict altogether and sneaking your way out and protecting the ring in the process
The added longevity also helps in this
Whereas with Sauron, being the one master of the ring, and as you already said already coexisting in both planes, he decides how the ring's power works, maybe he could turn invisible if he wants to but Sauron is also arrogant aka "where's the fun in that?", if he simply wants the ring to make him strong and commanding then he will be strong and commanding, whereas someone else trying to do the same thing may find it backfire like with Isildur
Right! Where are we going? Btw awesome job just like everything else you’ve done
I think the Ring turns them invisible so they'll get the Super Hero feeling. "Oh wow, I'm invisible I can do whatever I want" meanwhile the Ring is twisting the wearer, urging him to keep it on for as long as possible. The Ring boosting the wearers abilities of stealth and cunning and maybe killing pulling them deeper into the Wraith world faster.

On the other hand, we never see Sauron without his suit of armor so he may well be invisible inside it. He still needed the armor to fight in so, invisible meant vulnerable and, even with the armored glove, his finger was cut off.
My understanding for Maiar is the ring does the opposite for them. Maiar as spirits have more power, but when they take physical form, their power is diminished. The ring would enable a Maiar to have a much more powerful presence in the seen world.
Here's a what-if scenario:
What if Durin's Bane went ¨Fuck logic¨ and decided to join the fellowship?
Based on what you just said that Glorfindel can exist in both world as he had seen the light of the two trees, then Galadriel had that same ability.
So your comment about galadriel using her elven ring to stay in ME, so that makes me think of the rings of power idea from gil-galahad that the properties of the mithral, which ~could~ be a simaril light, could help the elves stay and not fade away as well.
I wonder what gave Tolkien the idea to use rings as the main weapons in Middle-Earth. Great video!
He was inspired by the story of The Ring of Gyges written about by Plato. It's a philosophical puzzle/moral tale that reveals how people would act if they could get away with whatever they want by being invisible. Originally it was just an interesting conundrum to take this fine upstanding mannerly Hobbit and turn him into a thief without losing his good-nature. He always steals in an altruistic way, not actually caring about the treasure for himself.
It was only later when he decided to write the Lord of the Rings that he decided to make the ring the thing that linked the two stories together.
@@wheatgrowssweet Interesting.
Lord of the Nazgul takes the cake
Its surprising that in the book of Plato, The Republic, he mentions the magic ring of Gyges which turned any mortal being who wore it invisible.
He was a powerful soldier of Melkor.
what kind of monstrous hilarity would happen if a troll put on the ring? i mean that would be interesting. *invisible SMASH* or a troll ringwraith?
The Witch King of Angmar is the most evil, lmao he is badass. He popped Gandalfs staff like confetti lmao I love that scene.
What of the wizard?
I Will Break Him!
The power of the One Ring to provide invisibility is like the sudden occurrence of the fading event (transition of the body into the Unseen World), which takes place in the elves over time and depends on a certain process, and is reversible. It would be unreasonable for Sauron to be able to make an already inherent ability through an object originating from him
“Great! Where are we going?”
Right we are going
You forgot to discuss Isildur. The Disaster of the Gladden Fields was more than just an unlucky orc ambush, it was the Ring calling for rescue from Isildur's hands. Isildur was taking the Ring to Elrond to make sure it was out of his hands and safely kept with the Elves, presumably to destroy.
We know that the Ring did turn Isildur invisible except for the Elendilmir which blazed undimmed until Isildur's hood covered it. It was another of Tolkien's eucatastrophes, that Isildur never arrived at Rivendell with the thing. Elrond was afraid to even touch it by the end of the 3rd Age, was already too powerful.
And Gandalf never wore the One Ring. If he had, the jig would have been up immediately. Bilbo wearing it for a few seconds at a time over 60 years while Sauron was still weak is one thing. Gandalf putting the Ring on is a blaring siren in the night, Sauron could not fail to notice. He still might have trouble finding the place, but the momentary location would have honed the search to overrunning to general area much more quickly.
This is explicitly contradicted by Unfinished Tales.
@@thomasdawe1837 what is? Sorry please be more specific.
Sam bore the ring for days and gave it up willingly. Even more so than Bilbo did.
Now I wonder if Gandalf was able to see bilbo when he put on the ring for the last time?
When Bilbo put on the ring at his party, did he see what Gandalf (who was in attendance) looked like from the perspective of the unseen realm?
Right! Lets do this thingamabob.
What-if video idea for you to do:
What if Gandalf never fell at the Bridge of Khazad-dum and continued with the fellowship to Lothlorien and on forward?
The ring is part of Sauron He poured much of his strength into it when he was much more powerful than he was at the end of the third age. This is the story of Morgoth repeated. Morgoth poured most of his strength into the corruption of Middle Earth. Morgoth's Ring. Sauron was Morgoth's most powerful corruption meaning that Sauron was made powerful by Morgoth. Therefore, the ring itself was a part of Morgoth.
Morgoth didn't have essence in the ring lol , he corrupted Sauron but didn't influence him with power aka he didn't pour his own power into Sauron like he did with Arda , this is why Morgoth has nothing to do with the Ring and he himself has no power in it , Arda is Melkor's 'Ring'
I think Sauron and Tom Bombadil and the wizards belonged to the same kind of people. We do not know if Gandalf or Saruman would have been able to see Frodo or Bilbo when they wore the ring cause that never happened. I think they would be able to see both of them.
It is understandable that you think that since we know that at the very least saurpn and the wizards are all maiar.
Bombadil is an anomaly along with Ungoliant. Bombadil was around before anything else in Middle Earth being the oldest and yet Tolkien said that he was not Eru.
@@shinestar2912 Did not think he was a God but he had no problem using the ring or seeing Frodo.
Do we know whether Gandalf could see Bilbo while he was wearing the Ring? I don't believe Frodo ever puts it on in Gandalf's presence, but Bilbo did as his disappearing act at the birthday party. I think there's a scene in the Hobbit movie where Bilbo has the Ring on and none of the Dwarves or Gandalf can see him. But I'm not sure that's true to the book.
The real reason is this - Tolkien didn't know about the one ring when he wrote the Hobbit. The idea came to him later, and he changed the importance of the ring to being the "One" ring.
Remember, in the intro to the Hobbit it is noted, that the story did change later to accomidate the "One Ring" story.
In Letter 131 Tolkien states that the 3 great Rings forged by Celebrimbor do not confer invisibility. Thus, the fact that Gandalf doesn't because invisible despite using Narya is not a point in favor of the idea that the One Ring would not make him invisibly. I think it would because he is not just a Maia, but an INCARNATED Maia. His body is human - inflamed by a powerful spirit, yes - but a real, not feigned, human body. As a corolary of this I may add that Gandalf wouldn't be able to see a Ring User (i.e. Bilbo/Frodo using the One Ring) for his eyes are the same a any mortal's.
Could you guys make a video on vampires and were wolves in middle earth?
Right! Where are we going? 😄
👍👍
Sauron had complete control of the Ring, he could walk unseen among people, if he wanted.
The simplest answer why the ring doesn't render Sauron invisible is that HE made it. It contains part of HIM. It would be like asking your arm to make you invisible. That it pulls you into the unseen realm, or all the rest of the explanations are extensions of this. Sauron resides in the unseen world. Sauron made the ring out of his own being. etc., etc.
I think the Pole Position still belongs to Morgoth as the main villain of Tolkien's Legendarium.
Right! Where are we going? Contrast discussion please!
I think one goes wrong by assuming that invisibility is a power granted by the One Ring. Think about it. Why would Sauron need to be invisible? With so many vast powers available to him even without the ring, he hardly needed a party trick like turning invisible. Sauron did not need to do the kind of sneaky things that are possible with invisibility (stealing fruit from fruit stands, going into the showers of the girls' basketball team)!
The purpose of the One Ring is domination. For Sauron, it enormously increases his ability to force his will upon others. When worn by someone other than Sauron, it places the wearer under the ring's domination. Never forget that the One Ring has a will of its own, just like its maker, and its desire is always to return to the hand of its maker. (Which is why burying it or throw it into the sea is not going to work; eventually it will find its way back, as Saruman knew damned well though he lied about this to Gandalf.) The invisibility is merely a side-effect of being swallowed up in the ring's domination. You are gradually ceasing to be a person of your own, and just as your spirit is gradually fading, the invisibility is the physical manifestation that you are being swallowed up by the ring. The ring-wraiths have been swallowed up entirely by the ring's will, and no longer have any physical form or spiritual distinction of their own.
Thus, my argument is that invisibility wasn't something planned by Sauron, but a side-effect of the human/halfling's being swallowed up by the ring's will.
Right! Where were we going then?
RIGHT!!!
Where are we going? 🤣
So, does that mean that Tom Bombadil was along the same level of power as Sauron? ( living both in the physical world and other side)?
Is Sauron when he is in his armor just the armor or getting bigger? Because without it he is not that big to wear it. So is he growing or something Else?
Sauron is a shapeshifter and the armor and size is from the films.
@@Lord-Emperor-Vader Tolkien described Sauron in his letters as slightly bigger than human stature yet not giant.
Right! Where were we going?
The greatest villain in Tolkien's legendarium, in my opinion, is Saruman. Saruman betrays his mission and those who trusted him.
Right, where are we going!
You forgot that Sam had the ring for a few days and gave it up willingly.
I heard Isildur intended to bring the ring to Elrond before he got killed.
One of the contenders for worst villian is Wormtounge. He corrupted the mind of Theoden, and was able to abuse his power for his personal gain, destroying the people of Rohan in the process.
Witch King of Angmar...as Sauron's servant, he managed to destroy Arnor and severely weaken Gondor
Also, he's scary as f****! 😁
Sauron has become popular among Tolkien loremasters, so I found myself.
If you're not a Majar, or Tom lol you would turn out just like Gollum eventually no matter how long it took. Maybe, maybe an elf wouldn't, but even if it took 12000 years even Aragon would turn into a nasty creature like Gollum if he kept the ring. Your stronger character may hold off the transformation but not forever. I don't think a Majar would turn invisible seeing as how they could probably control the power of the Ring. I feel like only those who could not control the Ring would vanish when wearing it. The turning invisible is the Rings way of saying, "I own you. You don't own me." It pulls them into another dimension against their will.
Does Gandalf also exist in the shadow realm?
In one image, it seems Sauron is using a ring or two as nose jewellery.....So, where are we going?
If the ring moves one to the realm of the spirits and Gandalf (same as Sauron) is already in both the physical and the spiritual realms, how's it that he couldn't see Bilbo when wearing the ring?
How does the ring sap life, I thought it extended life span..also return of the Kinga why didn't the Mian God's join forces with gondor .they just chill on their island while middle earth hangs in the balance by a thread
right where are we going?
How about this, when it turned people invisible it sent a beacon to the Nazgul and Sauron. Since Sauron didn't need to send a beacon if he possesed the ring. Therefore, it was a safeguard.
melkor is the one evil to rule them all
The most evil was Frodo. He hid his intentions the whole time. He would have brought that ring straight to Sauron if gollum hadn’t heroically stopped him. He constantly alienated his best friend and was willing to doom all mankind… he did Sauron’s bidding right until the final moment when gollum intervened.
Right!

Where are we going?
Right
The greatest villain is the ring itself as it corrupts everyone near enough bar few characters
I always thought that only „weak“ people like hobbits became invisible when wearing the ring and the ones that were „strong“ like aragon wouldve become empowered with various powers 😅😅
RIGHT! Where are we going?
Right where are we going?
Right. Where are we going?
Right, Where were we going?
Where are we going ❤
If he poured his cruelty and will to dominate into the ring… why did he still possess those qualities?
Like every other villain he is screwed by his big ego.. Why would he be invisible when he is scary and beautiful and likes to be seen and feared. Same is with real world villians. They dont hide nothing anymore. Ego is their biggest weakness.
O think Ungoliant is the greatest villain, because she is both powerfull and evil and unlike sauron and saruman she was always evil and Morgoth was saved, helped and the betrayed by her.
Clearly the true villain have always been Lobelia Sackville-Baggins you know he caught her running away with his silver spoons once.🤣
My theory has always been since the One ring did not touch flesh it would not affect the ring bearer.
Then why does it turn the wearers clothing invisible if it only affects flesh?
3:12 I know that's meant to be Bilbo, but I see Ben Shapiro.
I'd wager that if Sauron is looking for the ring & it obeys him to an extant (it hears its master's call), both Sauron and his ring have the best chances of finding each-other in the unseen world. However the ring is like a parasite and needs a susceptible host to bring it into the unseen world, and also bring it to Sauron, similar to how Sauron controls the Naz'gul. (EDIT) That's not even my idea entirely. Not from the books, and not the movies...that's from the video game series Shadow of Mordor
@@IThinkImJudgeJudy69 but that doesn't explain when someone wears the ring, they turn invisible WITH the ring? That implies independent conditions. What you suggest means the ring must remain visible while on someone's invisible finger. Are you suggesting that?
Tom Bombadil (from the books) could make the ring turn invisible without wearing it and could also wear the ring with no effect on himself. Sorry, but I think Tom is a pretty specific account of interacting with the ring
EDIT: I did't realize you meant specifically Sauron using the ring vs anyone using the ring
Sauron is DEFO the best villain, no competition. Melkz is a far simpler villain just being destroy destroy destroy, whereas Sauron is much more complex, and almost relatable.... i mean the guy just wanted order!
Greatest Villian would have to be Melkor, after all he corrupted Sauron and was the proto evil in the world.
Right, Where are we going?
