Doesnt the foil block the air circulation system?

Not really. Silicon plate does that. If you use the foil at the very bottom, under the basket it works great plus zero mess while cleaning up. Just tried myself!

The mesh is not for air circulation. It just drips down the moisture the food releases while cooking. So the food gets baked or cooked properly.
