    Pick up the first items in the game in the order of: Cake, Hammer, Earth, Apple, Tap (spelling "CHEAT") to become invincible, then turn left on the first level to unlock all the doors.
    Permanently burned into my bran that one :D

    Daniel, I can't believe you didn't get the James Pond 2 Robocod (RoboCop reference). I know for sure that RoboCop was popular in the UK, Why did you think it was a Terminator reference. Robocod pictures of armor even looks like RoboCop. You should watch RoboCop Daniel, it's a great movie.

    Did you ever see the short animations that are bonus features on the CD32 edition of Robocod? Along with a rogues' gallery of supposed Pond adversaries, most of whom I don't think appeared in the games. I've always suspected it was a backdoor pilot for a possible James Pond cartoon, though I don't think anyone's ever said as such

    Disappointed with your thoughts on Operation Starfish. That was my favourite by a mile. There was so much to discover, loads of hidden levels and secrets within the levels. The controls did take a little getting used to, but I loved it. This game kept me occupied for a very long time, I can't remember if I even completed it, I remember it being a pretty big game.

    Operation Starfi5h was ace. Over a hundred levels, some of them are solid too. Loads of secrets to discover and loads of different endings. One of my favourite games of all time. Great vid but disagree that JP3 is the least enjoyable in the series.

  • @ashleyw9307
    @ashleyw9307 7 лет назад +21

    I loved James Pond 3, it has some sort of quirky charm to it that I can't help but love, it was pretty tough and lengthy as well if I recall so I got plenty of enjoyment out of it. Robocod is also excellent, of course. The first game is easily the weakest of the three main games in my opinion (it's not bad though), and I don't care more for the spin off personally.
    Rather than just porting Robocod all of the time, it would be nice to actually have the whole trilogy released on modern platforms.

    • @darknessinc.Inc830

    • @TheDutchGhost
      @TheDutchGhost Год назад

      Indeed. It is annoying that JP 1 and 3 have basically be forgotten. Is the second game even called James Pond 2 Robocod these days?
      JP1 is the weakest entry but the developers were probably still trying out what really worked. A remake of that game (if all got remade for a Trilogy release) could fix the flaws as I do think it have enjoyable parts too.
      I would actually like to see a fourth game with its own theme (I am not talking about the failed Kickstarter project that was basically Robocod part 2), perhaps this time using time travel to go to different time periods.
      Sadly unlikely to happen as would be a Trilogy re release as the IP is dead.

    Woah! Blast to the past with this one! Not because of the franchise, or even the game, but because of those penguin biscuits. My dad is from England, and when I was a kid I used to travel a lot over to visit him, and I remember these penguin biscuits from that time, I almost forgot that they existed, as last time I were over, I did not see any of them, but... What I do remember was them being frosted, or at least you could take them into the freezer to make them into some sort of chocolate ice cream biscuits. I thought they were delicious.

  • @morden279

    Great video. I had the original James Pond on the Atari ST when I was a boy (although I found it very tricky), and was introduced to Robocod on the School PC (we had *one*) a bit later. My Dad later acquired Robocod for the Megadrive (thanks for explaining the cartridge design!), and I spammed the game for months, if not years.
    What always got me about the franchise was its absolutely unique whimsical art design, with its goofy and mischievous-looking anthropomorphised enemies and assets - not to mention the ear-worm music, which I can still remember thirty years later. I wish you'd gone into more detail about this, but I realise that art is to an extent subjective, and maybe the look of the game didn't grab you as much as it did me.
    Thanks again for the upload.

    10:03 ahhh the nostalgia itch I wanted scratching.
    I think what made it so unique was that it was a "platformer" without timed jumps. I liked that as a kid. The way you describe the gameplay of the first James Pond reminds me of a contemporary game (yet with a way more vintage pixel style) Minit.

  • @RoboSparkle
    @RoboSparkle 7 лет назад +2

    Thanks for putting this together, I'm surprised that you felt so negatively about JP3 given the sheer variety of levels and the improved boss fights compared to the original games, as well as the deeper secrets and the option to play as a frog with teeth! I did recognise the TAS run of JP3 in your gameplay footage, which I think is well worth a watch as it showcases the sheer speed and impressive gameplay that is far more technical and challenging than the speedruns of either of the other two games.
    Having said all that, I wholeheartedly agree that Robocod is the best in the series and the best ending screen of any game ever. I tried to encourage people to contribute to the KS campaign with a few trilogy speedruns and we came up with a load of possible titles for the game. My favourites were "A View to a Krill" and "Goldfishfinger"
    Can you please do a complete history of Cannon Fodder sometime? In my opinion, a greatly overlooked classic game, decentish sequel, and wtf third game, would be interested to hear more about it :)

  • @GameHammerCG
    @GameHammerCG 7 лет назад +2

    Another brilliant video, although I have to take issue with the idea that later James Pond 2 ports have redesigned levels. The PS2 & DS versions have double the original levels, not just redesigned levels. They also have a godawful camera that wobbles as James moves across the uneven platforms; which takes a long time to get used to. Once you do, they are exceptional ports of the game however, and well worth grabbing for either console (especially because they are still very cheap).

      That game seriously caused a disturbance in my Force.
      The game designers must have sat in a room for 72 hours eating only LSD.
      That game is so disturbing, and that's saying a lot to be able to disturb me, as I spend most of my time reading about serial killers.
      That game gives me nightmares, and until watching this video, I assumed everyone in the universe also recognized that game as both not fun and horrific.
      J.P 1 and 3 were "fine"
      But the second game causes me to enter a fetal position and have to disassociate.
      The music, the mechanics, the backgrounds, all the sprites are scary and Pond stretches for some reason like a Rule34 furry (fishy? Scaly?) sex demon.
      That game is a result of and a cause for drugs existing in the world. It's nightmare fuel.

    The series could almost use a Digital Foundry style comparison video. The Amiga version of Robocod was probably the best version at the time. It used the copper bar effect to make it more colorful than the competition and it might have had better sound too.

    One of the few Amiga games I‘ve never actually played. It just looked „too cute“, which meant „kid‘s game“ to me back then. Strangely enough, now at 35 years old, I start to appreciate the colorful pixel graphics. Maybe I should finally try it out.

    Thanks, fun presentation of Pond lore! I have but one quibble, Aquatic Games is AWESOME lol.
    I recommend to anyone, at their earliest convinence, compete with their chosen closest friend in the multiplayer mode of Aquatic Games and after all the insane antics which come from that, look back and see if you still think its a weaker game ;).
    It's absolutely packed with quirks, secrets, and weird, quirky ways to score extra points and clever little ways to edge out the competition. It shouldn't be judged on its single player mode (for which your review comments are fairly accurate). There isn't a finer multiplayer game (or at least there wasn't back when Aquatic games was released).

    The Commodore 64 version of James Cod 2 was created by Data Design Systems, which shortly afterward became Data Design Interactive.

    Ahhh playing these classic on the Amiga 1200 back in the day! Was brill!
    Holy crap Aquatic Games! I forgot about that! I rented this a few times from our local video shop, not as much as I rented Streets Of Rage 2 but was a few times.

    robocod on Amiga was the best platformer on the system. You have to consider that mario was only nintendo and sonic only on genesis. Pond was on Amiga, etc, and it's better than you are giving it credit for.

      Superfrog is inferior to Jazz Jackrabbit. And while I'm bummed that that game got a remaster and Jazz didn't, at least there was more than one game with 2 out of 3 being good and one sadly being cancelled. Thank goodness the good ones are finally available on GOG, which I didn't think would happen knowing what Epic is like these days!

      Cyberbrickmaster1986 i also want them to re release Jill of the Jungle and Xargon. A complete history on Epic be very interesting they changed so much

      Xargon is freeware, but Jill is unfortunately very difficult to come by. So I welcome more classic Epic Megagames releases!

    The Robocod demo for PC allowed you to use the cheat to unlock all the levels. No-one I know bought Robocod, we just picked up the magazine that bundled the disk.

  • @Icaras

    One thing I recall about this series was the MS DOS demo of Robocod, as while it was intended to only let you play the 1st 1 or 2 levels, you could do the cheat right at the start of the game, and it would unlock ALL the levels, so I basically had the full game for free (Well for the cost of the magazine whose cover disc I got the demo off, haha)
    I don't think it was fully programmed, so I recall trying for ages to beat the final boss and he wouldn't die.

    Oh man I remember James pond. Played it on my game boy advanced but never got past the first level because I never knew how to play games when I was little

    I’ve never even seen the first one till I watched this video but I owned No.2 and The Aquatic Games when I was younger.
    At the time RoboCod was one of my favourite games, also owned Rolo to the Rescue

    For a Yank, I recall the first JP on Genesis/MegaDrive well as it was one of the few games I owned as a bonus I had seen all the Bond films up to that point.
    To the point I'd make up weird one-liners while playing from Bond history:
    James is tied down to a frying pan-
    "So you expect me to talk?"
    "No, Mr. Pond, I expect you to 'fry!'"
    Hey, I was a kid, OK? Best I could do lol...

    James Pond 3 I primarily remember for its ridiculous password system, which was not only super long, but included the items from the game as symbols. I really wish I bought something else that fateful day in Toys R Us.

    What we need is a James Pond CGI movie! :) That should revive the franchise. The owners should give that idea to an animation studio. :)
