    SpEffect is the term used in the game files for various effects that are applied to the player or NPCs. It most likely stands for Special Effect. SpEffects include things like the healing from drinking Estus, Havel's Ring increasing your equip load, the poison status you get from the swamp, decreased movement speed from the stone guardians, and even the entire Dragon Form.There are over 800 different SpEffects in Dark Souls 1, so they do a lot. The amount of people who have commented on the term has really reminded me how odd it probably sounds for people outside the modding community.

      is SpEffect short for Spell Effect or Special Effect?
      Neither would surprise me, but it makes me think of how in all of bethesda's creation engine games, any piece of armor or weapons or whatever that have any kind of bonus effects on them get them from enchantments. If you open up power armor in the GECK that bonus strength? Comes right from an enchantment.

    • @j.k.4479
      @j.k.4479 3 года назад +100

      I feel like they would die far too frequently for that to be beneficial. What would have been better is more NPCs having their white summon sign mid way to the boss to help you through the area. That way they wouldn't really die.

    • @sapphic_sophie
      @sapphic_sophie 3 года назад +123

      @@j.k.4479 Yeah, that could be okay, but I feel like white signs really don’t feel like a part of the world around you. I also don’t think the NPCs should die easily to enemies, to be clear. Quelaana is one of the first pyromancers and in turn, one of the greatest of all time. She should be able to beat blighttown’s Poop Men™ without breaking a sweat. Plus, she doesn’t show up until you have a +10 pyro flame, so it’s not like she’d make the area too easy. By the time she appears, blighttown isn’t really a major threat anymore, and having her easily destroy a bunch of enemies would help to show off how much of a bonafide badass she is.
      Also, a lot of the NPCs in the game should-just logically speaking-probably come back to life when they die, if we’re being honest. Most of them are undead, and resurrecting is kind of the undead’s whole deal. Maybe if you kill them, you turn human and get a bunch of souls, but they become pissed with you the next time that they come back. That would also fulfill the Crestfallen’s comment about “stealing humanity from a healthy undead” for offline players.

    • @Valanway
      @Valanway 3 года назад +27

      There's a lot of things FROM could do to make their non-AC games feel (ironic, I know) *alive*, and NPC interacting with the world and player even slightly proactively is one of them. There's no wandering "Chosen Undead"/"Bearer of the Curse"/"Ashen One" (or even generic neutral undead mooks), all the NPCs are standing and talking lawn installments unless slapped (but even then they just return to their lawn installment spot and nothing changes,) and nobody really makes note of any changes to the world, other NPCs or to the player's journey outside of a few key moments for a few key NPCs or their "quests."
      Like yeah, sure, the world is pretty fucked from the player/protagonist's perspective (although that's more so because we never ever saw the places with relatively...thriving(?)... populations or small villages, but we know they exist,) but they can't be the only ones trying to fix or change things.

    • @megamagicmonkey
      @megamagicmonkey 3 года назад +35

      Well, you get the effect also that you see an NPC swinging weapons around and you're thinking to yourself "Oh shit, I'm totally next." The game doesn't have any indicators who is friendly or not beyond "this person is just sitting here, they're probably ok."

    • @ladyabaxa
      @ladyabaxa 3 года назад +10

      @@j.k.4479 That first sentence there, that's probably the main reason that NPCs are passive (and enemies are passive towards them). You'd have to seriously buff the NPCs or code in an inability to die to avoid the scourge of first time players of your game getting super frustrated that all the NPCs keep getting themselves killed. That then would be a problem if you intend for them to be player kill-able which, yeah you can have multiple versions of all such NPCs but that times more dev time.

    WOW! That beginning, though! 💥
    I had no idea you could actually get Quelana killed like that. Usually, I approach her from the sidelines, to avoid aggroeing as many enemies as possible.
    Good thing I never tried to simply B-line towards her whenever I went shopping for her Pyromancies, cause that would've been DEMORALIZING as shit in my playthrough! 🤣

    That little pile of muck was the bane of my SL1 run, having to watch those flys float towards you and hope they turn around. Thanks for the quitout tip, never knew that.

    • @IrvineTheHunter
      @IrvineTheHunter 3 года назад

      Quitout is super useful any time your pulling a lot of aggro or if your falling, it's start, left, up, select, [right/left], select. You might die when you spawn back in, but it just saves sooo much annoyance when your at that point of the game.
      Quitout resets buildup to zero? but also restarts poision/toxic burn time so if your not careful it can lead you to getting killed, enemies take a second to aggro so it's my favored way of getting past the Anor Londo archers, open the menu well running and quit out instead of rolling through the arrow on the ledge itself.
      You'll lose the rear archers aggro and you can hang back so SK will pull a bow again for easy melee or charge forward and engage him with the sword. Also any boss fight will get reset with you just outside the fog as an easy alternative to trying to Bone out mid-fight.

    For the weird backstab animation, they probably used Object Oriented Programming method to set the status on the player, and programmed the coffin bit first without thinking about it being used elsewhere. So then when the swamp programming guys made that area they likely just called the 'hide' method on the player and never saw the backstab animation in testing.

    • @ZullietheWitch
      @ZullietheWitch  3 года назад +6

      So the way SpEffects work is, each SpEffect is represented by an ID that gets stuck on a character, and the game references that ID against the SpEffect Param data to see how that character should be affected. Each param entry has an array of values that assign different qualities to the SpEffect, like increasing or decreasing the affected character's HP, spawning a VFX somewhere on the characters's model, or even deciding if it should show an icon below the healthbar, etc. Both 4130 and 4140, the coffin and Quelana spEffects respectively, have the value for Throw Condition set to 3. So when a character goes to perform a backstab on another character that has one of those SpEffects applied, the Throw Manager spots the modified Throw Condition and switches what Throw is performed to the coffin stab one. Since the param entries are unique, there's really no reason they should have ever changed the Quelana SpEffect's Throw Condition value, which is what makes me think they just copied the values over from the coffin one and tweaked it instead of starting fresh, overlooking the Throw Condition in the process.

    Imagine from Quelana's point of view, sitting down there all these years, not being bothered, then all of a sudden you hear some random person splashing around on the other side of your pillar. You lift your head up and immediately see a boulder coming directly for your face. Since you've been sitting down the entire time, your legs are asleep, and you can't do anything puff into soul dust.
    Brutal.

    A very clever trick. I looks like the janky nature of the effect could be a result of the somewhat rushed/unfinished development the game had. I'm sure they would have changed the backstab animation back to the normal versions if they had the time.

    Well, in a way, this makes much more logical sense than the more obvious, Skyrim-esque thought of all enemies just immediately forgetting you ever existed when you step into that area.
    That being said, I can't imagine "that's logical," is the first thing you think when your main source of pyromancies suddenly loses an entire dimension because boulder-boy kept chasing you
