Ha! I sell them (or return them if they're kindly lent to me) once I've demoed them. So although my pedal collection is certainly larger than some, it's relatively small.
Lol, just watched a bunch of these vids and hit the subscribe button based on the strength of the loops too 😅 I think the Blues Driver comparison video has my favourite loop thus far.
You need to find a drummer and make a goddamn record, man. These riffs are way too good to be kept in these already very helpful and informative pedal demos. You have a gift for riff writing, keep it up! Love your channel ❤️
Your loop here is really groovy man, great job!! EDIT: 10 months later and I bought my first tube screamer: The East River Drive. Really great sounding pedal, colors your tone a lot but in a nice manner. I think I like tubescreamers now??
Dunes sounds great, love the versatility of tone, although I don't think you could ever go wrong with the classic circuit. I have a Maxon OD808 on my live board. It's a great boost and an amazing overdrive.
Wow! Just wow! Perfect demo video. Love the wood, the books, the stationary view point, the use of the looper pedal sound it's the exact same throughout the demo, the quick back and forth comparisons so you don't forget what either sounded like, the AMAZING CAPTIONS!, the humor and personality in them... perfection.
The East River Drive just won for me. Like, cmon its dirt cheap and it sounds close enough, but not too close. The Dunes are pretty good and other people noted it, without considering the harsh price, of course.
It's the same pedal down to the same transistor/opamp/whatever. The authentic one might - or might not - have better quality components (stricter tolerances, more durability). I don't know and that's why I bought the East River Drive. The slight variation in the top end is likely caused by a difference in potentiometer maximum resistance. It's typical for potentiometers to have 10-20% tolerance so that e.g. for 500Kohm pot the value is really between 400K and 600K. Typically it's 0-10% off the nominal. Super nerdy effects builders probaby test and bin their components before assembly to get more consistency but for mass produced pedals that's not reasonable. If you took a few genuine items off the shelf it could be that you would find greater difference between them than to an EHX clone. These slight variations might be a reason why people hunt tone by switching pedals back and forth. They waste time and money searching while they could just switch a few components inside the box.
This is the second video of yours I've seen, and I expected to see in the desc. or comments that you use cover songs. Your music is wayyyy better than it has any right to be. Oh my God... You are amazing.
Well that's very nice to read. It's honestly just me noodling about trying to find something that isn't boring to listen to and fits the tone of the pedal okay - glad I seem to be getting it right.
I have the East River Drive. I really like it. I don't know from Tube Screamers or Blues Breakers but it gives me a nice, tight, focused sound I really like.
The truth is, a TS is a very very simple circuit and everyone with a bit of brains can replicate it 100%. I own a spare Behringer TO800 and it sounds spot-on line a TS808. And I paid it 20€ NEW (not joking). My favorite inexpensive TS clone, though, is the Hardwire CM-2 (the model when it was still called Hardwire and not Digitech): the normal mode is 100% TS808 clone as well, then it has a "modified" mode where the gain goes up A LOT while not muffling the sound like the Mooer does. And you can find it used for like 40€/$.
I bought a Behringer TO800 out of curiosity after the JHS video on Behringers. It sounds EXACTLY the same as a 150$ Ibanez TS808 and as far as I know is true bypass.
hardwire cm2 owner here. that thing is one of the best pedals ever for the price. built like a tank, sounds awesome. there is really NO reason whatsoever to buy an original Ibanez TS at those prices.
True. No hard to find chipsets or diodes to track down. All very common and cheap. You can build your own for $30 (including the pc board and metal box) I’d say assuming you have the soldering gear already. Maybe closer to $75-$100 if it’s your first pedal. Pretty fun experience to build a pedal. Amazon has a decent soldering iron (be sure it’s variable temp or you’ll melt that board) for less than $20. Watch some soldering videos and don’t beat yourself up if you f it up. It’s just pedals. No rockets here. The 808 clone would be an easy first project. I also recommend the queen of bone (king of Tone clone). Amazing sounding pedal. Google it.
@David RF yep I’ve got the TO800 as well and it is a TS808 to perfection. Paid the same as you too... brand new with free shipping from store to door, $23 usd Best $23 I’ve ever spent on gear by far!
Hello from Portugal! That loop is awesome! Can you post a tutorial of how to play it? I want to play it in my house with all windows open so the streets of Oporto hear it. Thanks. Keep going.
Great job as always! The Tube Screamer is one that has been cloned to perfection many many many times and all the clones I’ve heard are good for the most part. The TS808 is pretty simply circuitry. It’s really just a matter of what you want to pay. I have the Behringer TO800 Vintage Tube Drive and it’s identical. Behringer has great clones of the EHX Big Muff, Pro Co Rat, and every classic Boss pedal as well.
I've noticed Mooers are very good for the price and pedalboard saving size, however there is usually some life and interest that is missing in the sound, but they're 80% to there!
Great video man! I wish more gear channels would use loopers a LOT more often in comparisons! I'm sold on the EH East River myself. Not only does it sound good, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that I was slightly won over by the look lol. I love the art on it, it looks fantastic imo.
I just discovered this channel. You not only make great, informative videos, but you also have great taste in books. Gore Vidal and Elmore Leonard? I love it
I feel like EQD took the Palisades/Dunes and said "Well if we're gonna do it, let's make it a Swiss army knife...". I use my Palisades as a 3 gain stage Bass preamp because it's that versatile. I was also not a ts guy
I love my Earthquaker Dunes. It has the same chip like the TS808 but it's crazy what it can do. I usually let it do a normal TS job and tighten up my metal sound but i like the options with tone shaping, fuzzy sounds and all that.
This is an interesting way to compare pedals. Using a loop to avoid the subtle differences in playing, style, pick attack etc that can occur playing live for each pedal. The only downside I see is that exact thing. Some pedals react differently, better or worse to different playing techniques( guitar volume, pick attack etc.)
Sounds like "Life in the Fast Lane" by the Eagles at first but the transformation it took when it picks up is glorious! On a side note I went with the EQD Dunes with the lower switches to the right, the upper switch to the far left and all the knobs below 12 o'clock (varying) for a few different purposes like stacking on top of my Soul Food for a mid-boost and gain boost for metal and roll the volume pot on my guitar to max for solos. You can't go wrong with any of the pedals but it all depends on what you are looking for in a TS-llike pedal.
Funny... This came out right when I got my first TS. Just got it in the mail yesterday. It's a keeley moded TS. Of the four, as they are, I'd go with the dunes, however, in my opinion, the best TS-style pedal out there is the fulldrive 2. God job, mate. Cheers
I think the Full-Drive is based on the Boss SD-1, which is an essentially identical circuit to the Tube Screamer but with asymmetrical clipping (which sounds harsher / better, depending on your preference) instead of symmetrical. Of course the Tube Screamer is actually based on the Boss OD-1, but Ibanez couldn't use asymmetrical clipping because Boss had patented the circuit, so they used symmetrical and added a Tone control, and a much more popular pedal was born.
Usted señor esta haciendo los mejores shootouts de youtube!!! Dedo arriba, subscrito, hit the bell and you sold me a Katana amp dude, its works so good with pedals, gracias por tu trabajo tan bien hecho.
I've got a TS808/TS9 duel waiting to be edited, but other than that I think I'm done with Tube Screamers for a while. (Although I've just got my hands on an MXR Il Diavolo which is a 'hot-rodded' TS, so who knows?)
Nice riff... and yes !!! now I know what to buy. That East River was amazing. Couldn´t hear any difference between ERD and the 808. And the I can get 3 ERD for the same price as a 808 :)
Hey man, how are you holding up? You’re the reason I bought the River Drive and I love it! I come back for this amazing riff from time to time to put a smile on my face, it’s so good❤ Hope you’re doing well🫂
Another great comparison video 👌 I must say the TS808 does tug at the old heart strings ,but I wouldn't be adverse to the East River Drive . I'm lucky enough to own a very early TS9 with the same chip as your 808 reissue & it still sounds wicked after all these years . Interestingly I was told the TS9 was released in '82 , but the serial no.on mine , 166178, makes it '81 ??
Love your work mate. Would love to see your take on the Maxon TS pedals. I have the OD9 Pro + and it is a great pedal. ALSO would love to see you test some compressors.
I think I'm maybe done with Tube Screamers for a while (I've also shot a comparison of the TS808 and the TS9, which I'm trying to get round to editing). Compressors are interesting. I just don't know how I feel about them or whether I even care about they do...
awesome demo, one of the best comparison videos on youtube. may I ask you why you did not play with joyo vintage od? I am %100 sure it wouldn't be better than any pedal in the video, but I just wonder your opions about joyos.

The riffs you use on your videos are all killer. Makes the demo that much better. Keep up the great work.
