Sorry I'm a few years late with this comment, Jeff Hansen, but good for you! I have traps for starlings and house sparrows. The house sparrows I kill on the spot when checking and catching them in my bluebird boxes. I rip their head off. Head goes one way, body goes another. I leave no room for error. Yes, I've been verbally attacked for my methods. But you know what, I have bluebirds and tree swallows in my bluebird trails, not house sparrows. I am a protective steward for our native birds. Thank you for your hard work!
Thanks Monty for all that you do. FYI, I've got a new Backyard Birds channel I'd like you to subscribe to if interested. Subscribe at ruclips.net/channel/UCcA2lozsxl_TUSqnqVhXP9A

Only this afternoon I cleaned out two starling nest boxes ready for spring. They both had four young last year 2013. I think it should law for everyone to put up at least four nest boxes designed for the rarest birds, Starting with the House Sparrow and the Starling.
+William B If the nestboxes are in Europe, I'm all for helping the starlings in their ecosystem where they evolved, but not in North America where they out compete our native cavity nesting birds.
Come to America and please take as many back as you can fit on the plane. We are completely overrun by these disgusting birds on the US. Wish they were rare. I wonder how you made them rare in Europe.
I kill about 100 Plus every year. Its amazing how many Native cavity nesters return.13 yrs of hard starling and house sparrow elimination has resulted in the return of Blue birds, Purple martins, Great Crested Fly catchers, tree swallows, and 4 species of wood peckers not to mention the chickadees. Eliminating these pests DOES makes a difference..If I can do this on a 1/2 acre any one can.
Thank you for your informative videos and website. I have a flicker in my wooded yard and was unsuccessful with nest boxes last year and am hopeful for this year. I also have bluebirds. I have house sparrows and a few starlings (though the starlings don't seem to be a big problem until May) and I recently got a sparrow trap and am unfortunately excited to put it to use. I have always had a "wouldn't hurt a fly" disposition but I do support the killing of starlings and sparrows. They kill and run off all the native birds. They can't peacefully co-exist. I've tried and it's impossible. I support what you are doing.
Curly, Thanks. It's a breath of fresh air to find someone that understands the problems starlings and house sparrows pose. THANK YOU. FYI. This channel is obsolete but I've got a new Backyard Birds channel if interested. Subscribe at ruclips.net/channel/UCcA2lozsxl_TUSqnqVhXP9A

A lot of problems. They are an extremely aggressive and invasive species brought here to North America from Europe. that has nearly caused the extinction of native purple martins and bluebirds, tree tree swallows and competes out and evicts woodpeckers from nesting cavities.
barosanu they are PESTS in America. Shut the fuck up and educate yourself they cause more harm to indigenous birds and the environment then anything else.
@@789sandel they are invasive species nearly caused the extinction of many native American birds. If not for people like this we would have lost many American species. Thank him instead.
+Bob Lack I've watched the starlings destroy woodpecker nests and attack the adults. Our woodpeckers are no match for the dagger like beak of the starling. Starlings will even kill each other defending a nest. And our woodpecker species like the flicker are losing ground. They just can't compete against the non native starling. The only place they can breed successfully is where there are few to no starlings. The flicker population has fallen drastically. Here is a quote from Cornell: Northern Flickers are widespread and common, but numbers decreased by almost 1.5 percent per year between 1966 and 2010, resulting in a cumulative decline of 46 percent, according to the North American Breeding Bird Survey
Yes he murdered it Marc, forgive him for he knows not what he does..... But then, people here in the uk kill the grey squirrel because it's not native and for what it does. So maybe I can understand it.
+William B Because of my control of starling numbers in my yard, the flickers finally were able to raise a brood of babies. There is no way the flickers could defend their nest against the many starlings that would come to steal their nest box, destroy their eggs/young, and attack the parents. Here are the flicker babies being fed: ruclips.net/video/Lgc4vkfD5fQ/видео.html
Murdered? You should see how many native birds these bullies murder..please take the back. He knows what he does..he is giving oir native birds a chance to raise babies.
Well done my friend.
Hi There Jeff Hansen I just found your channel and I love your videos so I was wondering do any homemade bird traps work on starlings?

Whats the problem with a starling?

Invasive flying rats from Europe.

there is like millions of woodpeckers and other native bids. suffocating a non native bird wont help out bud.

Pretty ignorant statement.
Educate yourself. Don't be led by your silly feelings.
