  • The LEGO Technic 42124 Off-road buggy is a great set, but the Control+ profile that comes with it is difficult to use and does not offer much functionality.
    In this detailed step by step tutorial I show you how to create a custom control profile in the Powered Up app from scratch that is much easier to use.
    More LEGO Powered Up tutorials will be shared on Patreon soon, stay tuned!

      Bit late to the party but I'll drop this here for anyone who might have the same problem.
      I had issues with the steering on the 42109. It would veer one direction and would persist through recalibration. I was able to resolve this by using a (lego-safe) lubricant on the plastic 7 long blue pieces connected to the steering. I found that grit and dust were causing it to bind. Also, double-check the play in front-wheel axles on the suspension side; I added thin washers before the wheel to reduce play.

    You should add two buttons, that adjust the steering for the car to go more left or right, since the powered up default return to center steering block is never perfect, and the model always has a tendency to go either left or right. I programmed mine to be in increments of 10, but you can also have it change in increments of 1 to get very precise adjustment.

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  3 года назад +3

      There's a huge play in the steering system anyway so the centering does not necessarily depends on the calibration. This was meant to be a simple setup tutorial for the set, more variations and advanced functions will follow.

      The steering setup is far from being precise, you can check it if you move the wheels by hand. The motor might be in center position but the wheels not. Sometimes it also happens that the motor does not return properly to zero, I will provide a solution for that in one of the following tutorials.

    I wonder if the LEGO control+ app will keep the controller interfaces for discontinued sets. If not, most would be pretty easy to replicate with custom controls, except for the 42100 set. The excavator arm has really weird joins that often require 2 motors to move synchronously even when you input one action via the joystick. It is unknown what exact math the excavator uses to calculate the position of the arm. So I really hope that LEGO keeps the controllers for discontinued sets

    • @McKrushi
      @McKrushi 3 года назад

      If I remember correctly in the interview with the PU product owner (scrum terminology) he said, that it is likely that there will be a point where they will remove or modify model presets to keep the app size under control.
      You can reproduce the bahavior of the 42100, but you have to recalibrate every single time you start the app, which is kind of unpractical.

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  3 года назад

      If the app had variables that can be saved locally and reloaded then this limitation could be solved. It'd be great to see an official Powered Up port of the retiring Control+ profiles that would resolve the issue and also keep the Control+ app size at a manageable level.

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme 3 года назад +1

      RacingBrick I have a perfect idea! What if upon downloading the control+ app you get the interfaces for all the current sets, but optionally, you can download the additional control interfaces for discontinued sets from within the app itself. There’s something like this already in the lego mindstorms 51515 app. You get all main models when you download the app but optionally you can download additional code and instructions

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  3 года назад +2

      Good idea, not sure if the current framework would allow this but hopefully the developers will think about it. I would still prefer to see an editable version of the profiles, just to know what are the official techniques used :)

      Yes, you need your steering motor to be in place already in a steering setup with limits. At every startup it runs a calibration, trying to find physical endpoints. If there's no endpoint, it will run forever and won't finish calibration.

    • @RacingBrick

    Thanks heaps for this. I have built an RC vehicle (a road grader) and this tutorial helped me get it going and control it. However the steering block just didn't work - clearly my model was not compatible with the block's calibration sequence. It takes one full motor rotation for my model's steering to turn full left or right from centre. When I ran the block, the motor would just go non-stop in one direction; once it reached it's limit the pinion started jumping over the rack. Maybe the transmission arrangement I've got doesn't give the motor the required amount of feedback torque to finish the calibration. I thought I could program my own re-centring somehow, but it seems there is no simple way to record how far the motor has turned. The 'turn to angle' block didn't help either - possibly because it doesn't know whether to travel to the specified angle clockwise or anticlockwise, which obviously matters. I've set up a control slider for the steering which works, but I have to manually recentre the steering which is a bit tricky. Possibly I'll set up some buttons so I can turn the steering to preset angles and then back to centre. Any suggestions welcome and thanks again!

    I've followed these steps exactly and for some reason, the steering causes the motor to constantly run in one direction with no way to stop it. I have the exact same segments as you do in the flow, I have reset the connection to the hub, switched to different ports, removed everything from the green steering piece and just left it on the set to the connected port, I have used different types of buttons and sliders. No matter what I do, the result is the same: the motor will not stop from running at full speed in one direction. I'm using L motors for both steering and drive and I've tested this with the Control+ app as well. If I go on the Buggy preset, steering works just fine. Does anyone know how to resolve this one? I'm not finding anything on this issue anywhere.
    Great video, btw, just hopefully it'll work for me as well at some point.

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  2 года назад

      Sounds like your motor is not built in. The steering block runs a calibration sequence every time you run the code, and the calibration sequence needs physical end blocks (like in the steering system of the buggy) to detect both endpoints to be able to set the central position correctly. If there's no endpoint, the calibration sequence runs indefinitely, hence "the motor runs in one direction".

    • @razvanpopa7294
      @razvanpopa7294 2 года назад

      @@RacingBrick Thank you, that makes sense but these motors are not on any build right now and I don't even own the buggy set. But if I go in the preset for the buggy in Control+, the naked motor runs the steering commands just fine. In Powered Up, it doesn't. So I'm not sure about the physical block theory.

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  2 года назад +1

      @@razvanpopa7294 this is not a theory, this is how the steering block works in Powered Up. Insert an axle in the motor, put a piece on that axle that does not rotate freely and add a simple pin to one of the front holes of the motor to block the full rotation of the piece. Then you can run the code and see how it supposed to work, simple as that.

    That is almost Mindstorms level of programming. The only thing that the smart hub from Mindstorms has in its advantage is that it can remember programs and run autonomously. (Of course the smart hub has more ports and comes with a rechargable battery, but this can be worked around (by using multiple Technic hubs and rechargeable batteries).
    EDIT. Oh, there's Python support in the Mindstorms as well...

    • @McKrushi
