Vijay Amritraj was respected and treated by world countries as an unappointed Ambassador of India. Once Bill Clinton saw Vijay at Wimbledon. After exchange of pleasantries, Clinton invited Vijay and family for a dinner at White House, an extraordinary gesture to an exemplary sportsman. We are proud, Vijay.
Vijay Amritraj is a great ambassador for India and tennis. As a player I remember his tremendous play against Mats Wilander in 1985 Davis cup, when he beat him in straight sets. Wilander was in the top 3 in the world then. 1987 Davis cup, he came from down match point against Martin Jaite of Argentina and won the match and helped India win 3-2. Thanks to him and Ramesh Krishnan, India made it to 1987 Davis Cup finals. He was the reason tennis fans in Chennai could watch great players in Chennai Open. Sad that Indian Tennis association could not carry forward the great work that Vijay did. His love and respect for his parents is truly admirable. I remember seeing an interview of his mother who mentioned how she would take her boys to many competitions. He had great parents and he lived as per their expectations- as a kind, generous and very decent human being and a fierce competitor who always played fair. Vijay, we are very proud of you. ❤
I can never forget seeing them on Sterling Road, going for their morning practice with Aunty ( their mother)..WOWand now to get here is absolutely awesome! Hearty Congratulations!!
Same batch at Loyola College Chennai. Occasionally saw him in college. Followed his career closely (the ABC of 🎾 tennis, those days - Amritraj, Borg and Connors - started in that order but certainly didn't continue in that order) Gentleman on the court, and outside, most definitely.
He is of my age. I have been following his game right from the beginning. He along with Borg and Conners were called the ABC of Tennis those days. Congratulations and Celebrations 🌹
Congratulations Vijay for this honor and it’s long overdue. You put India on the World Tennis Map. You have lived up to every one’s expectations without complaining or compromising. Your interviews at the Slams were amazing and enjoyable. As a part of the trio ABC(Amitharaj, Borg, Connors) you have seen and given it all. Salute. PS Everytime I pass through Chesney Lane enroute to FM Hall in Egmore Chennai I think of you. 🙏
A very touching speech. A thorough gentleman. We grew up reading his tennis exploits in 70s, 80s. Recognition came and so deservedly ..Well , better late than never... Great sportsmen and equally great human beings. ❤🎉
Wore his pride of India literally on his chest. Paved way to new heights in a sport which was hitherto not achieved and inspired many to follow. His role as a commentator was probably even more stellar than his career as a player. Not to mention his family's contribution in the academy they created (Paes was one of the products), production of hollywood movies...... I am sure the whole country is very proud of you Vijay Amritraj.
I saw him playing in my college(AM Hain College, Minambakkam) annual tennis tournament, coming with his brother Anand ad Mom Mrs. Amritraj; he was competitive with Ramesh, Shankar, Joe, Jayakumar Royappa and others. I never forget his match against Jise Louis of Argentina in 1973 Wimbledon. A missed SF by a whisker. True professional and thorough gentleman. Congratulations Mr.Vijay. you, Ramesh, Leander, Mahesh all made our country men keep their held high.
Super congratulations vijay sir. We Indians are all honoured and blessed by being you and Leander inducted to 2024 International Tennis Hall of Fame. You both are our true Indian sports ambassadors to bring glory to India. What an inspiring speech you both gave after accepting the great honour. Truly incredible. Hats off to both of you for leading a success story from a humble and unimaginable beginnings. Kudos once again.
Hello Vijay, You have been a hero in my life from early ages. I have played tennis for close to 40 years but never competed in any tournament. I used to follow your success through newspapers in 70s and 80s when there was no TV. I am 72 now and I am so happy for your induction in Tennis Hall of Fame. You richly and thoroughly deserve it. You have been a terrific ambassador of Tennis as a sport indeed! Congratulations and May God bless you!
Great Speech..didn't know he was such a great orator...remember my childhood watching some of the greatest tennis players Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, Manuel Orantes, Jimmy Conners to mention a few.....miss those days
Congrats to Vijay Amritraj for this stellar achievement 🎾🏆. With his incredible contributions to tennis, he’s definitely earned his spot in the Hall of Fame. Not only was Vijay a formidable player, racking up 16 ATP titles, but he was also a trailblazer, breaking boundaries as India’s first world-class tennis player. And that’s not even mentioning his commentary career or all the humanitarian work he’s done. A true legend of the game!
Such an honour to have met you, Vijay Sir, and shaken your formidable hands! You're one of my favourite sporting heroes and even if you never played any sport, I would be a fan of your amazing, positive, joyous personality. Such a blessing to have met both your parents too!
I remember going to a tennis match in South orange NJ where Vijay and his brother played doubles. I met his mother and gave them a batch of masala dosas that they desired think the year was 1973 I think. Congrats Vijay👏👍🏾💐
We love so much Vijay ( Vijay means victory). His Parents gave him a lovely name, very thoughtfully ! He gave so much happiness as player and later as a Tennis administrator & a commentator.
Better late than never, congrats Mr Amritraj. When I grew up - it was you and Ramesh Krishnan, followed later by Leander. Now we produce world class athletes - but you, Prakash Padukone and few others paved the way for all.
Simplicity and humility was always your style. Being a loyolite and in the hostel we always saw you , Anand and parents… not to forget the Sundays in church. You’ve been the pall bearer for sport in this country..Congratulations sir.
Legenda dunia, legenda olah raga, legenda karier olah raga mendunia, berkarier di bidang olah raga, berprestasi, menjadi legenda dunia, menteladani kesuksesan ,penuh lika - liku , dari waktu ke waktu, suka dan duka, senang, sedih, gembira, merayakan,di rayakan,di hormati,di hargai, mendapat tanda pengharagaan dan mendali ,kenang - kenangan seumur hidup, terima kasih ,selamat, good bless you all .
Vijay...along with Borg and Connors made up the ABC of tennis. Truly the best Indian tennis player ever who did not need a doubles partner to carry him through.
The News Paper captions called him ' 'The Tall Dark Handsom Indian Prince',when he gave a very very tough fight to then reining king of Wimbledon Court Bjorn Borg in semifinals. Amritraj was the real prince of the game. Congratulations Vijay Amritraj! The gentleman of the game .You made India proud! God Bless you & your Family.
It's not Vijay but the hall of fame should feel itself honoured .The fact that it was bestowed to a black man and Indian so late in the twilight of his illustrious life bears testimony of racial bias and intolerance towards non whites and disgusting and disgraceful behavior for treating them as second class citizen .He would have been given the title of SIR if he was white .Vijay, Michael ferera billiards, Sunny gavaskar, and P. T. Usha were the icons in 1970 who kept the indian flag flying high. Thanks to whoever has uploaded this video as I go down memory lane watching him win national championship at Deccan gymkhana Pune way back in early 1970s. Wow, what a pleasant surprise to see his lovely family.!!
@sharadchandrachuhan5517 you’re a disgrace you dimwit. He was not inducted as a player but as a contributor. Contributors always have to wait a lot longer than those players who are all time greats. It’s a longer body of work. Nothing to do with race you ignoramus.
Congrats to Vijay and Leandar. Very proud moment for india indeed. I hope mahesh bhupathi is also in line for this honor. I wonder whether Ramanathan krishnan was inducted as well. Vijay has always been an excellent ambassador for tennis and he truly deserved it. IMHO he waited for a long time..
