  • Rajendralal Mitra's edited Buddhist literature, *Sardul Karnabadan*, inspired Rabindranath Tagore to compose *Chandalika*. This story revolves around the love tale of the Buddhist monk Ananda and a Chandal girl. According to the original narrative, Ananda ultimately seeks refuge in Buddha, returns to the monastery, and both Prakriti and Maya become companions on this transcendental journey.
Rabindranath retained the core elements of the story but infused it with a profound humanistic appeal. The Chandala girl, Prakriti, is portrayed as a young adolescent. Due to her caste-based identity, she is untouchable and marginalized by society. Yet, one day, this same girl finds the revered Buddhist monk Ananda standing before her with outstretched hands, pleading, “Give me water, give me water.”
Ananda's request stirs a storm of emotions in Prakriti’s mind-a conflict between her human self and her identity as a Chandala girl. Her mother fails to understand the root of this inner turmoil. What follows is a conversation-a dialogue filled with yearning, love, and the desperate longing to claim Ananda as her own. Through her association with Ananda, Prakriti undergoes a transformative rebirth, which is depicted through the retelling of past events in this dance-drama.
