    Christopher: I want to thank you for the work you do on this YT channel. I really love your videos, particularly on Schopenhauer. Schopenhauer is one of those rare souls who I feel a strong kinship with, and it's often that I hear something from him that reminds me of the direction my mind should best take. This video is a perfect example of such. I've taken way too much of an unwise burden on myself to shine a lantern in the darkness for other people - but the world, being completely mad as it is, doesn't want to hear it. In other words, I'm taking the truth, and the stupidity of people, too seriously. Well, now I'm arranging things to live an ascetic's life when my current lease runs out in May, and I think "denial of the Will" will be the primary focus of my life for the foreseeable future. I think Schopenhauer is right about this and it's time for me to, well, get serious about it.

      Reflection is key. Anyone who is unable to be objective about their failings, faults, and failures is an obvious narcissistic megalomaniac. Obvious examples of those are folks like Chump, 3lon, Bezoz, Zuck, Gatez, XiXiPi, Puton, KJU, KK, LH, Eyegurr, and other hyper-wealthy individuals. From their perspectives, they have NEVER made any mistakes, and their sheepish followers echo such blind beliefs. It's actually both embarrassing and yet intriguing because it constantly re-verifies the Dunning-Kruger phenomenon.

      one recipe for happiness is to consider/name yourself ugly, pathetic, useless, jerk, looser, etc. this kills the ego and you feel great freedom that more awesome than love. just let yourself be nothing. when you feel any tension just remember that you are nothing and don't have to deliver success, perfection, etc, that mess and failure is a part of pathetic you. but don't forget to treat other people the same.

      @ kendrick ... yup, only narcissistic megalomaniacs can't admit when they've made legitimate mistakes and explain what they learned from those errors. Instead, they will *always* claim that they're essentially perfect without actually stating "I'm perfect", lol.

    I think the goal should be to live in moderation. Too much will burns the candle at both ends while too little is to become irrelevant.

    • @saintsword23
      @saintsword23 10 дней назад +1

      Extinction of will is the end of suffering. What suffering is is the gap between your will and reality, but if the will goes extinct, there's no more gap there at all. To think "too little will is to become irrelevant" is just a statement that comes from the will. Of course it's going to think something like that. Intellect comes in and notices that you're already irrelevant, so this consideration is itself null.

And yes, even if what you decide is to "do nothing of import" or "to do nothing at all because nothing matters" is totally your own decision. However, when you make an objective analysis of what mankind has achieved over thousands of years, it's undeniable that it is indeed "more than nothing". :) Doesn't even mean that it's all 100% awesome, good, ethical, or just, but certainly greater than zero.

People are as miserable as ever, as under the heel of the Will as ever, and there's absolutely no end in sight. All technology has done is serve the Will but has not made a single step toward extinguishing it or denying it. The world is just a play or movie for the Will and that's all it'll continue to be.

    I don't really agree with the separation of the will and intellect like this. Will as drive to live comes first and intellect second. When one is on purpose, excited and motivated, in love, winning the intellect sees life as meaningful and worthwhile. When one is lacking in Will ie bored, sick, in mourning, depressed, etc that is when the intellect sees life as meaningless and vain and absurd. Thought is a result not a cause. In fact when one is 'in the flow' one doesn't think at all and only reflects on the experience after.

    • @johnzielinski9951
      @johnzielinski9951 10 дней назад

      I agree, but I would add that when Will is waning, the intellect can step in and put things into perspective. It can remind us to keep putting one foot in front of the other because "this too shall pass" and the flow state can return. Conversely, the intellect can regulate the euphoria of the flow state by fostering a certain Zen detachment: get absorbed in the process, but don't become obsessed with the results. It's not as black-and-white as Schopenhauer would suggest.

      @@johnzielinski9951 Thanks for your reply. I get what you're saying I'm a bit confused about the definition of 'Will'. Today's world it has association with 'will power' and 'ego' and here it's being discussed as opposite to intellect ie emotion or the id. I haven't read the two volumes yet( The world as will and...) maybe it'll become clear then. Thumbs up to Chris and a great channel though.

    I'd challenge pessimists of this persuasion -- that "nothing matters" -- to put their hand on a hot stove. Their reaction reveals their intense caring, that is, that things matter to them. To the extent one gets alienated from these kinds of simple truths via the intellect, to the extent one fails to realize and appreciate the desperate way they indeed do care about their life, their body, their emotions ... he or she is engaged in intellectualizing in abstraction ad absurdum far more than they are describing existence accurately. Beware when your philosophy is a defense mechanism for the difficulties of being. We care deeply about what happens to us, even when we deny this, even to the point of suicide, we are still acting to defend how much we care. Suicide is the result of intense caring about what is happening to/in us. "I don't care" might be voiced, but the deeper truth is "I care desperately but I am in so much pain or so numbed (again because it matters) that I will do anything to escape it."

      @@saintsword23 Then how is that a vanity of existence or "nothing matters?" It seems more like a vanity of philosophizing and intellectualizing, while living life itself matters deeply to us.

    • @saintsword23
      @saintsword23 9 дней назад

      @ It's vanity because putting emotional energy into anything will always lead to suffering. Either you:
      1. Don't get what you want and suffer from that.
      2. You do get what you want. Then either:
      a. You go through a short period of feeling great about it, but have to suffer the inevitable loss of that feeling. And then when that feeling subsides you feel bored until you pick up a new task to struggle with.
      b. You don't feel great about it - ie, you're disappointed. So you suffer from that. But then you also feel bored until you pick up a new task.
      At no point do you get a permanent, lasting feeling of satisfaction. Life is always dissatisfying. The solution to the problem isn't to just say "Nothing matters," that's a sort of naive pessimism that doesn't help, and it's, as you point out, dishonest as we experience the fact that we do care about a lot of things.
      Intellectual recognition of this issue is only a first step. It's a really big first step, as points to the way out. The way out is to condition the will to calm down. You can't just decide to stop caring one day - it takes a lot of practice and working through one's conditioning. This is the ascetic practice.
