    Really got to thank you for doing this video. I had one of these gifted to me years ago. It never worked. After watching your video, I was able to open it up without damaging it and I can now see a good chunk of wiring that’s burst - no idea why, doesn’t look heat related, almost like someone has done it. Anyway I’ll work my way through this amazing video and hopefully get it up and running. Once again - many thanks for taking the time. All the best

    A great job Nick. It does make you wonder how Revox delivered these tape recorders to customers without them getting broken in transit.

      They were delivered in just a regular box with kind of styrofoam fitting. I still have the original 1965 packaging

    This is an early g36 with curved tape slot and under cover. This had a spring activated tape end stopper. Later models had clip on head covers with straight slots and photocell tape stoppers.

    Nick what is the easiest way of taking the unit out ? I have acquired an original speaker baffle and is ready to fit. Should I put the unit sideways speaker grill facing down and slide it slowly out ? or pull out from the top ? And what about putting it back in the case without damaging the speaker ?

  • @AttilaSVK

    Interesting that I have the later model (with the light-based tape sensor) but the heads are the earlier round design, while in your unit they are the newer ones.

    The capstan on this is unusually small diametered. Hence it wears incredibly faster than normal diametered capstans. Here, it spins 4-5 times more per foot of tape, resulting in minute undulations on its surface causing noticeable wow and flutter.

    Just a thought on the VU adjustment, a modern line in is quite hot for a G36, I can never get the nobs past 12 oclock without the input going right into the red on the VU.

    • @nickadams5411
      @nickadams5411  7 лет назад

      Hi Robert
      I find the graphic equaliser very useful for adjusting tape decks.
      The VU levels on the G36 seem to be set to give a very high level at the 0Vu mark.
      I have to adjust the VU gain pots as described, to get the level in and tape out equal. The input level controls are then at about number 6.
      Your 12 oclock position is quite normal.

    • @robertgilmore5496
      @robertgilmore5496 7 лет назад

      Ah I see, so you are only adjusting the VU meters sensitivity?

    • @nickadams5411
      @nickadams5411  7 лет назад

      Hi Robert
      The VU levels were out.
      It is important to make sure the VU levels are correct before you make a recording, or you may be under or over level which will not give optimum recording without distortion.
      I did not have to change the record/replay amps. But I did optimise the bias.
      Ideally you need a calibration tape, but a pre recorded tape can be used as the levels on the tracks should be the same.

    Hi Nick, I bought a G36 off Ebay and the capstan motor does not run at all, rewind, fast forward all fine. Also the loudspeaker and baffle also missing, would you have one at all I could purchase off you ?

    • @nickadams5411
      @nickadams5411  4 года назад

      Hi Harvey. The capstan motor is unlikely to have failed. It is more likely that the selector switch needs cleaning. If you look at the circuit diagram, the capstan motor is supplied with the same voltage as the winding motors, and the selector switch has quite a few contacts.
      I assume the capstan motor shaft can be spun by hand.
      You can get the service manual Free from
      www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/revox/g36.shtml
      The previous owners must have used it through a monitor sound system, so the speaker was not required.
      It is shown as a 5ohm, but any between 4 and 8ohm will work fine.
      There are machines broken for spares, especially on the German Ebay site, so just keep looking.
      All the best. Nick

    Great production Nick. I have the same model but one channel is not playing back at an equal level to the other channel. Any idea what i might try. Possible bias pots?

    • @nickadams5411
      @nickadams5411  7 лет назад

      Hi
      You can try the bias pots. Turn each one up and down while recording and try and get the maximum output.
      Otherwise it could be head alignment, which means adjusting the heads while making a recording and playing back.

      hi
      The G36 is very easily damaged in the post.
      Also due to their age, they can have many little problems, including head wear, brake wear, dry bearings and valves worn out, and various adjustments out. And they are awkward to service some parts.
      Therefore I am reluctant to service them , unless they are a good condition machine.
      Also sending them through the post is a recipe for disaster.

    • @robertgilmore5496
      @robertgilmore5496 7 лет назад

      Hi Nick, Thanks for getting back to me, I would deliver the deck personally as I wouldn't trust a courier. It does have a lot of head wear but as I understand it Revox released an updated head towards the end of production, I can buy these heads from a source in Germany, I was also told by a French guy on Tapeheads forum that he has used these Revox heads but had to add a resistor into the circuit somewhere, that's all I know and he hasn't got back to me with anymore information in over a year. I also understand that heads from a solid state wont work with a tube machine so I am still a bit dubious but the seller does state that they are for the G36, any thoughts on this?

    • @nickadams5411
      @nickadams5411  7 лет назад

      Hi Robert
      You can use other heads as long as they can be fixed in the correct position. It is fairly straightforward to fix and wire them in.
      The frequency response may be slightly out, but the difference of tapes has more affect on frequency.

      Hi Olaf
      Look at the Erase head on the left side of head block (Where tape comes in)
      The 2 track has 2 wide erase bars, with small gap between them (Black bar)
      The 4 track has 2 narrow bars, with gap between them.
