I started working for my dad nailing shingles at 9 years old. The number one rule is do not take a step backwards.
We are bros for life. I started my construction life on a roof at 8 or 9 yo. Best thing ever to happen to me.
I started tearing off roofs with my dad when I was 3 years old
I was born on a roof
I was conceived on a roof
@@bv2121😂🤣
They might seem flat but there is usually a void weight could cause damge. You are correct
I don't know if it's just code in my state of Minnesota, but we don't have that… Ours is a metal trough this laid under your shingles....no shingles extend across the valley -- it's metal.
Serious question though? Who asked if you go on a roof or not lol
@@TrickyIrish I am a white male, thought I could go anywhere I wanted!?!?! Lol 😂
It's the roofer.
Lacing the shingles up a valley is very difficult.
Way easier to cut the shingles off and put metal in.
At least do copper valleys if your going to cut them.
I’ve noticed that as well. No wonder this video had me slightly confused 😂
That's called metal flashing & it's not code it just depends on the roofer & home owner
That looks like some good stitching work I like a stitched Valley instead of a cut Valley it looks better to the eye
That is a laced valley. Manufacturer recommends that you don’t use it on architectural, shingle or laminate or dimensional. If you keep an eye on this particular valleys, it’s always the first thing to go on the roof. I’m just saying after 39 years of experience.
I can’t wait to tell my husband next time he’s on the roof lol great tip thank you!
I'm sure he knows
Knew this… 35 years ago. It was a nice reminder and hopefully helped others not to make this mistake.
Good tip for home owner as well 👍
We push the shingles tight into the valley, so this is not an issue. Also, running a California Valley.
Just now finding out--thank you, more tips, please....
Im a new roofer thank you a lot if any of you guys got tips for me im about to finish my last week training
What are you looking for tips about?
@@thomasbarlow3782 just general things to look out for, experiences anything really
yeah you can't shingle a valley like that around here. we do california cuts, matter of fact...that valley wouldn't pass an inspection around here. it's wrong.
I agree terrible!
I cant believe how redundant your argument was and you dont see it. You're not smart. "Wouldn't pass AROUND HERE." It's not wrong and your code is not code everywhere.
@@chantz7515It's the wrong way to do it .... even if it not illegal it bad practice to do that way
It isn't at all and if it for some reason is then that's a poorly built roof.
GOOD TO KNOW, but my big ass ain't gettin on no roof. Fear of heights keeps me from getting up that high. Thanks though.👍🏿
😂😂👍 better to stay safe bro !
Just now finding out, so thanks!
I have no business going on the roof. However, my uncle, that's a different story. As soon as he gets drunk, for some odd reason, he always ends up on the roof.
Thank you.
Yeah, why we never do a Dutch valley weave…. Most guys don’t know how to do them, or put in pieces / seam to close to the valley. Rey don’t wrap up far enough, and it’s a waste of shingles.
it's inappropriate the roof says it roofcism, and this is the beginning of discrimination, lol
I had no idea thanks
Nice weave.
I love the woven valley and don't understand y shingle supplers don't want this anymore . what do you know about this
this is the worse application into a valley in my opinion because they lose a layer of protection, that a cut valley would provide.
it leaves a terrible imprint, after a few years or so when the weathering kicks in you see an ugly unappealing valley. I'm pretty sure leaks ensure sooner than later on down the road
Yes you shouldn’t walk on the valley but as well lot of roofers put a metal valley as well. And yup you shouldn’t walk backwards!!
What I want to know is who laced that valley with architectural shingles?
it's called a weaved valley
@@numbers5796 depends on what part of the country your in as to what it's called. I've roofed from Florida to Alaska in my 34 years of roofing and heard it called many things. Call it what you want, to me it's a laced valley.
I already knew that M8, what else u got too teach us.
I didnt know that. Thank you!
My valleys norm end up a entire shingle length off to 1 side or the other in that length valley.
never heard of that. unless they stretched the materials, id think that if installed correctly itd be flat and therefor not rip.
did not know, although it makes sense. thanks for the tip
Is that in all valleys or just a woven valley. What if there valley metal
Just learned something new and makes total sense why one should avoid this
I'd probably always do it because I'm not gonna be doing it. I'd never be up there! (It's mainly a height thing.)
Yeah , I knew this , I mostly walk in metal valleys so not really a problem
That's because they DONT nail the shingle on the plywood.. they leave them off the roof maybe half an inch not touching the roof... With people I worked with we made sure the valleys were well installed since some people find it easier to go up and down using them
Oh wow. I just found out. Thank u.
I did not know this. However, I don't ever go on the roof so I'll have to see if my husband knew.
don't let it be ice and water protection in the valley, and a person step on it
you're definitely getting admonished for it, and sharply, with the understanding of the severity of your actions, no doubt so you get it, it will make you a roofer one day these lessons are so necessary
I did not know this before, I’m just now finding out
What shoes are you wearing?
I was taught my first day. They were showing me how to easily get to the top by walking side to side up the valley. But they said absolutely do not walk up the center.....or I was fired.
What material is that?
We don't have roofs like this in Australia.
Architectural shingles
Didnt know this thanks for sharing
Didn't know it! Preciate ya!
Just found this out,thanks
Weaved valleys are not recommended by most manufacturers. 😎
Been roofing since85. Learned never never bend over the edge front words
Valleys are your friends, especially on steeper slopes.
Never heard that before today. Have a flat roof at this time so no valley.
Yep I learned this the hard way lol
I’m still relatively new to roofing. With that being said isn’t that why we step in our metal, ice and water, and shingles so it won’t do that?
you can pack down the shingles firmly with your hand in the valley, and move up the valley when running application up them. other than this, you really don't want to scar or tear the shingles in the valley, because they will take the most weathering damage.
you want to stay away from the valley, and navigate off the center, always
I just don't plant my shoes in them, my body lays on one side of the roof and my bent knee extends over onto the other plane and I plant my foot, never in the center
Also dont weev your valleys
Lol is that how you really close your valley's 🤣 too funny contractors know everything right 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Whats the name of that shoe bro ? Can anybody help me
There’s shoes out there called Cougar Paws and they are pretty good shoes. They’re a little on the expensive side but are VERY good shoes for climbing roofs. I just started doing roof inspecting with a local company and my boss gave me a pair for joining her team. The shoes are $300 a pair.
I have a friend that got shingles lol😊
i did not know this
What’re you doing! Don’t walk on my roof
Yea nd don't step on the ridge by the valleys
I heard that before...but also forgot it
If the roof was done right and not basket weaved you wouldn’t have to worry about that.
Im looking to start inspecting roof damage. Nervous as shit...
Knowed that for 40yrs.
Weaving a valley with architectural shingles ? Lol
Don't walk on ridge capping either.
Is that true
That valley pattern is not recommended, you going to have to tear both sides if you need a repair near the valley.
I already knew bud 😂😂
Why is their no metal on this valley
No is ok to walk The Valley it takes 30p felt paper and ice and water shield is protected
Or you can put a valley pan and not worry about it
I wouldn't pay for a valley done this way.
agreed
If it rips it’s because it wasn’t laid flat
If it’s done correctly then that shouldn’t be an issue.
I've been roofing for 10 years and is what I'm scared of people doing
Didn’t know that
I knew it but only because I made that mistake as a rookie....
Never trust nobody safety first
just don't fall. other than that you can pay for repairs
I'm a roofing contractor
No you’re not
I got flashing vallys and i dont step on my flashing fuck that lol
There should be flashing down it
You are ffkn kidding right. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Your not even supposed to weave valleys with architectural style shingles
I'm just running out
I assume not because that rubber membrane is strong at boi but is it like this on commercial roofs too
For a walkable roof ok but steep roof another story 😂..
Yep dnttttt do that
Me ha no idea
Do a California cut then you don’t have to worry
I knoe this
Completely honest: I think I was just doing it cause I was afraid I’d bust through 😅
That's the roof where Miguel couldn't do anything
Don't shingle the valley, today's shingles are not meant to bend like that.
don't step on the roof, it's supposed to be done from the grou d
I got the same shoes lol
Don't walk on the ridges either.
walk on both sides of the ridge in a forward motion with bowed legs
Not a problem if previous roofer properly pushes down valley metal and shingles
Valley is no bueno!!!
Common sense really, but there are those that have none.
I'll physically assault whoever ran that cap
Weaved valley = awfull
Dont do roof walking at 71
I unfortunately found out on my own, on my own roof, recently
Nobody does valleys without proper sheet metal now adays, or they shouldn’t anyways
Makes sense not walk on valley
