My uni team had, in my opinion, a better system of choosing captains. We had a “team captain” and a “match day captain”. The team captain was everything a captain is meant to be, inspiring the team, picking people up on bad days, ensuring they’re switched on in training, and instilling the culture. The match day captain was the one who interacted with the refs and keep that line of communication open. They had to know the rule book inside and out, and make sure the ref was on our side. Sometimes you came accross a player who was the best at both, and so as just the captain always, but most of the time that’s how the teams worked.
It was amazingly. I was the match day captain for my team, and always made sure the ref gave us the 50/50 calls. I struggled to inspire the team and also focus on my own game, so it helped me to have the pressure taken off. The team captain was a bit of a hothead, but hilarious and could make us march to our deaths if we thought he was coming with us. We got the best of both worlds, and it really helped our team.
This is the problem I have with the captaincy in international rugby. You get players like Farrell and sexton who just can’t get the refs on their side, but they’re still made to talk to them because they’re the captain on the teamsheet. I think instilling the team and match day captains would have a positive impact for a lot of teams, solve the co and vice captain problem and let players focus on what they’re good at.

Like you your uni team idea. It can also be solved by having the captain as someone who can manage the ref like Kitshoff and then a second in command who motivate and drive the team forward. Not sure who would be any good at that role.

I dont think it matters too much who ever they pick, the boks have been using a leadership group for a long time, using the bench alot more than most teams, Bongi, Eben, Pollard, Duanne all played big roles. No one captain will be on the field all the time. They will continue that trend for sure. That said i believe Siya will continue when ever he is on the field. At the end of the day these players have that desire to play for eachother, regardless who is named the captain.

Siya was never the capatin or the leader it was all fake. Who picks a captain that comes off on 50 minutes nearly every game and that leaves his teambehind at the breakdown and on the scoreboard each time he comes off? The most scandalous thing is that the media went along with the pretence.

Thanks for another good video, Tim. Two thoughts in response:
    (1) It's true that technology has made the world smaller, and that Rassie and Siya could chat over Zoom (for example), but that way of working doesn't really gel with South African culture. I've worked in both SA and the UK and one of the biggest differences is that South Africans have a MUCH more relational approach to life, and doing everything over a screen is just not the same.
    (2) I agree that continuity should be a big factor, but even if Siya, Bongi, or Eben is appointed for this season, they're all 45-60 minute players within the Springbok gameplan. At the moment that factor is alleviated by the fact that they're often not all on the field at the same time (e.g. If Marx starts, and Bongi comes on later and can captain the final 25 minutes). The problem is that, probably, not all those guys will still be in the matchday 23 at RWC 2027. Rassie will need to bring somebody into the leadership group who is (A) likely to be in the matchday 23 at RWC 2027, and (B) able to either captain through the whole 80 minutes, or have enough experience/gravitas to captain the final 25 minutes in a tense situation.
In conclusion, I agree with you that it doesn't matter much who is given captaincy right now, but I think that from the 2025 season onwards it will matter more.

Already commented on Alfie’s site - but if Siya is still a first-choice 6, he SHOULD definitely keep the captaincy. As a man, he is frankly an awesome example.
If he wants to step down, or if Rassie doesn’t see him as an automatic selection looking ahead, then Etzebeth or Marx are the two logical repacements.
BUT although a forward makes more sense, with the current preference for changing 6 out of 8 pack starters after 40-50 minutes, you always need 2 captains for every game. Not ideal.

Hey Tim. You are spot on. I don’t think it matters too much. The current sa team and system is heavily reliant on big influenetial leaders who contribute as much. This is the same for any great team in any sport. They have a big group of leaders so even if the captain is out or changes it’s not a huge change. It’s when you lose all those big leaders that you realize those don’t get produced all the time.

Just on the vice captain topic, is this a reaction to fact that a lot of international captains that are generally forwards are now regularly not playing a full 80mins, sometimes only 50mins so coaches select and publish vice captains so refs and fans now know who is leading the team when the captains are removed by replacement or cards???

Is there a case to be made for a vice captaincy arrangement? Someone younger in the squad who is based in South Africa could act as captain while Siya is in France but then learn from him when he is in camp. The other advantage is that it gives the Vice Captain time to develop, like Siya had before 2019, then hit the ground running when Siya retires?

If picking for the future and players that might hold down their position in the future. Any young one that gets picked will have plenty of support if they can kick on and hold their own position.

Another guy with a shout, perhaps not immediately, is Salmaan Moerat. Natural leader and a phenomenal player. Unfortunately he needs to work through his injury issues. If he'd stayed fit last year, he would have been at the World Cup. Young enough to be around for the next two World Cups. But that's if he can manage to stay fit.
A left field option would be Marcell Coetzee. He's been unlucky not to play more Tests. He could be the Schalk Brits/Deon Fourie of 2027.

Kolisi is not just there for the team, specifically securing interest and support from black South Africans. Non-South Africans often don’t know that the dominant sport in the black community is soccer.
Black interest in rugby is still a relatively new thing, apart from a small region in the SE of the country where Kolisi comes from. He does deserve his position in the team, playing some really good rugby at test level in the last 6-7 years.

Sadly a few them have and will move out of the team. So some changes are inevitable.
I think Rassie plans to transition the team for the next 1 to 2 years, and then hand over the team to another coach if he steps back into a director role. At that time I'd expect a more formal decision on team captain/s.
For now if overseas player's are options, then Siya and Pollard are great leaders. If home based players are preferred, we have Eben, Am and Bongi. If looking to build a new captain, Willemse and many other leaders from clubs are coming through.

The role of Springbok captain is much wider than just the rugby team ... it's political and inspirational for the nation too.
The senior leadership group is good though, and the job will probably come from within those. The one I'd avoid though is Eben, because of his role as the Bakkies Botha type enforcer on the field, which isn't ideal for captaining the side too. Bongi will probably be more of a BombSquad player at the next RWC, so not sure about him. Lood De Jager potentially, if he can stay fit and healthy. Or maybe Kitshoff. But if you're going to look at either of those, then you may as well stay with Siya.

I offer a thought. One of Siya's greatest strengths was that he represented the people. He lived and felt their pain every day. In Paris he no longer lives that day to day. That isn't a criticism. And I would be very happy to be told that he could, in 4 years of life in France, still be able to represent the millions of less well-off South Africans at the next world cup, in the way that he has in the last 2 world cups. It wouldn't be about his context. It would be about the millions of new young South Africans and who they identify as their hero who has walked the South African journey (because that is a unique journey). I doubt there is a need for change prior to facing Ireland, but after that I would be very surprised NOT to see a new Captain.

I reckon Siya stays captain till the end of 2025, then they take a look at what is the best for 2027. If needed a change gets made. There are so many senior players in the Boks set up the role of captain is mostly to talk to the media (very oversimplification but directionally I believe that).

  • @joeritchie2
    @joeritchie2 2 месяца назад

Agree that there is no real need to replace Siya, though the argument for having someone based in SA is a legitimate one. But Siya's commitment and iconic stature makes him close to irreplaceable in the role. There are others who could do it, and you've identified a few excellent candidates: Bongi, Eben, Lukhanyo....I wouldn't think Kitsie, a very respected player and an all-around good guy. I've met him and had a real nice chat and like the guy as a person and player, but he strikes me as being perhaps a bit too much of an introvert. (Ditto PSDT) And there's a downside to any of the front-row guys, since most usually make way for a Bomb-Squad replacement, though perhaps if Bongi and Marx are in a match-day 23, you could make them co-captains, with whichever one of them is on the pitch at a given time being the acting captain. (Though Marx, like Siya, is not playing in South Africa currently, being in Japan.) Etzebeth is usually less likely to come off after 50 minutes for the Bomb Squad....What about a scrum half, like Faf de Klerk? Like forwards, scrummies are also usually close enough to the referee and carrying a lot of leadership responsibilities on the field.....All of this said, I'm with you: Stick with Siya Kolisi. Replacing him now also might just send the world the wrong signal about the state of Springbok rugby, which after back-to-back RWC titles seems pretty darn healthy!

  • @sniperdps
    @sniperdps 2 месяца назад

I can’t prove this - but I’ve been told by someone in the know that when it comes to leadership, Kolisi is more of the team symbol/cheerleader (in addition to being a great player). But when it comes to making tactical decisions on the field it’s more Etzebeth/Vermeulen that makes the calls.
Having said that - once a team gets its culture and success right, like the current Boks, or the 2009 Springboks, the captaincy becomes less and less relevant.
Bongi could captain the Boks. So could Etzebeth, Am, Pollard, Marx, I mean that squad is just full of leaders now.

You don’t have to prove it. It is so obviously the case. Siya is and was great but him potentially stepping down would likely only affect the press and not the team. Vermeulen ran that team. He was not the captain because he had the wrong face. It’s cool, it was needed but a shame that it had to be like that.

Just look at the parts of the World Cup where he was on the bench … Bongi/Handre whoever just steps in and does what needs to be done. As long as the team keeps its focus and vision anyone of the senior players can do it. Two little things … when Handré had to take his 50m kick against England… Bongi said 3 words to him ( picked up on the mic) “ For South Africa” … in the advert for Chasing the Sun 2 there is a scene where they are in the change room in a hiddld Pieter-Steph is talking ( not Siya) and says in Afrikaans ( are you scared , tell us if you are scared, then we will make a plan ).. Siya just nods. That’s why at the moment South Africa is 4 times champions … it was a team.

That’s exactly why I never thought that Siya was the real senior leader in that team. On the pitch and dressing room other seem to lead more than Siya. For me he did a great job being the face of the team but behind the scenes others had to step up to fill a massive void.

@@stephanusvanniekerk1720 Yep you have a point. For team to be better than the sum of its parts each team member must have a role. Siya’s was to play well in his position which he did and to be the captain (which nowadays is primarily a publicity role) which he also did. But I think that the Springboks under Rassie have always acted as a collective , Siya wouldn’t just take a decision it was always after a plan and discussion with the other senior players . That’s why as a Springbok supporter I never felt stressed when Siya was off the field and on the bench as you knew that the senior players ( Bongi , Pierre Steph, Eben , Handré Willie) would take over. Thats exactly why this team was the best Rugby TEAM of all time. If you looked at say the other contenders the 2015 All Blacks I would argue that they were the best Group of Individual Players to win a World Cup. But this Springbok group of players was the best TEAM. In other words when combined the 2023 Springboks were greater than the sum of their parts not just in one game , in all 3 elimination matches. To win by 1 point in rugby is very rare … to do it 3 times in row is statistically insane … it’s only the sheer willpower to not give in that can do that !

Kolisi has been a great captain, up there with McCaw. But times change, we age. He has captained 2 World Cups! Phenomenal. However, it is imperitive to begin the next, new cycle for the next World Cup. Plus, it would be great to win the Championship (TriNations), beat the All Black in New Zealand...that would be nice. Must build a new squad. A fair amount of the heroes for the past 6 or so years......they wont make it 80 minutes in 2027.

He has lead the reignition of SA Rugby under Rassie but I'm also of the opinion that his time has been well served and it's time for Pollard main captain, Erligh Louw vice to lead the Boks.
We have abundance of potential, Pollard with his age, performance and experience makes the cut for me 🇿🇦🇿🇦

Maybe Siya is playing his best rugby because he can just focus on the rugby there in France, without the burden of leadership. Let him help to groom the next generation, let him be an inspirational presence of the field but let him play his rugby without having to worry about being captain. I'll be interested to see what decision Rassie makes

Siya has barely been good enough to be in the team. At times brilliant for sure. He is just the face of the team. Exactly what was needed, no doubt. I suspect the team sees him as a good guy but not the one pulling the strings on the pitch. That is consistently obvious as far as I can see from my sofa 🤣
For the last 8 years or so I think vermeulen has been the senior leader in the team. Siya has done a good job in his role. He has been one of the leaders, not the main guy. He has nothing on guys like Smit , de Villiers, Pienaar.
I like Bongi as the replacement, just not sure how long his engine will last but for now he would make a great hybrid between having the right face and also being great at motivating the team and managing the ref. Top guy.
An alternative could be Kitshoff, but not fully convinced. Great ref management skills and obviously a solid rugby brain. I think he would need a second in command with more charisma to drive the teams energy. I would prefer someone else but we don’t really have that stand out guy currently in the team.
Side note - Scotland has one captain and a star player which is being managed by giving him the co-captaincy.
Willemse is not a good candidate for me. Love his his game. Looking forward to him moving from being a great individual player to getting better at dictating the flow of the game and creating chances for the team as a whole.
Time for the boks to work on an 8 year plan as our core won’t be around for a lot longer.

The best thing Siya could do for his legacy is bow out on top of the world. It's highly unlikely given his age that he will still be at the cutting edge of international rugby by the time the next world cup rolls around, and South Africa has already made the mistake before of keeping a World Cup winning captain around one WC cycle too long - John Smit badly tarnished his legacy by sticking around till the 2011 WC.... the last thing that Siya wants is to end up like Smit, having Bok fans viciously turn on him when his form inevitably starts to fade, which it will! It's also unlikely that Am will be the form player at outside center come 2027, and Bongi will no doubt be too old. Of the old dogs, Eben and Handre are the only realistic options in terms of leadership ability and having the potential to still be at the top of their game by then. Personally, I think it's time for a younger buck to be given the opportunity as captain, the most obvious choice being Damian Willemse, who is not only still young enough to potentially go to the next two world cups, but he already has two world cup wins to his name. Nothing lasts forever, and now is as good a time as any to ring some tough changes with WC-2027 the target 🤘

Lukanyo Am is who I#d like to take it on but at 13 he's too far away from the ref and the breakdown / scrums / linouts.
I'd like to see Faff and Kolisi take Sanele Nohamba (Lions number 9/10) under the wing. He's got the skills to be a Bok and I think a scrummy would make a good captain.
