I keep finding these little gems of yours every time I try a new medium, you have taught me so much! Thank you for being amazing and sharing your talent xxx
Thanks for watching, Jane, this one goes back a long way. Our junior school teacher in the fifties was from Brisbane. Friday afternoons were wonderful; out would come his violin and 40 children would sing Waltzing Matilda followed by a large map of Australia. :)
Mr. Usher, it is unlikely that you'll see my comment after more than a year since you published this piece, but I hope you do. I thoroughly enjoyed the inspirational and instructional approach, technique, and skill with which you share your knowledge. I am aspiring to illustrate a few children's books that I've written and have gone from acrylics, to oils, and now strongly considering watercolor. I love the whimsical look watercolor lends to imagery. I have subscribed and am anxious to view them all. I'll be going in the hospital for leukemia treatments (six rounds of chemotherapy on to the seventh) and an eventual bone marrow transplant. I'm now out and about in search of a suitable stick to begin. Much success to you sir. David.
Hi David, 6 years have passed since your comment; I do hope you have recovered from your illness and have managed to illustrate your books. Thankyou for your comment. I painted a line and wash last week. Best wishes, Dave. :)
Thank you Mr. Usher. I’ve watched this twice now and find new info with each viewing. I must say I love this painting and while you were working I would keep thinking “Oh, he must be finished now, it’s perfect, but no, you would carry on for another few minutes.” So much to learn from one 28 minute painting!
Thank you for this demonstration. Learned a lot. Especially to have guts, be bold. You scared me several times where I thought: "oh, what are you doing now!? You just spoiled the painting with that color/brushstroke!". But seconds later it all made sense. Thanks again.
Wow Dave, just wow! I can't say anymore, anyone would be very proud to produce something like that, pride of place on anyone's wall :-) Thanks for the turtorial mate!
Thanks a million ! I learned so much with your lesson. I never knew that holding the pen to sketch is was so important. But then when you talked about it and demostrated it, wow, I was so convinced. Again, thanks! You are amazing!
I think the line and wash method is my favorite!! I love this one! Don't be so hard on yourself. Your work is amazing! Thanks again for being a great teacher.
At each stage I think it is amazing, then you continue to add more detail and bring it to life. Incredible, thank you for sharing. I stop because I do not want to ruin mine if I have something decent, I need to keep going.
This was video was my introduction to your artwork and teaching. May I say you're brilliant, you got a fantastic technique which is extremely helpful to learn from.
I love the way you demonstrate your paintings , so professional ,but makes me feel that I can do it ,gives me confidence which is exciting . you make it sound easy in a very relaxing fun way , Thankyou 🙋🏻🎨🙋🏻🎨
I think this is pure genius. Thanks you for sharing your technique! I can't wait to try this today. Thank you so much. I love your British accent too, by the way...so charming.
wow, thank you Mr. Usher for this tutorial piece of art. This is the first time I watched your video and you are very impressive. I learned a great deal from what you did. You are fast and yet so simple and beautiful. Thank you.
I love this one, Dave! Best ever! I had left a comment on your video, A Walk In The Snow, about those wonderful scrubby trees and this was exactly what I wanted. Now whether I can do it or not is another question :). Again, thanks a million and keep up the great work.
Awww Dave, I just found this little beauty... Love the pastel shades in the sky... how amazing to be able to draw this with a sharpened stick!!! You always make me think 'I can do that!!!' TFS :)
Love this painting. I wanted some inspiration for line and wash that we are doing in my art class. Your tutorial is fantastic. Am very much inspired! I am going to try using a little stick!! Thank you Cristina
This is the first time I have seen anyone use a stick. I am a beginner to be sure and really messed up with my first attempt at a different scene. I have problems with my line thickness. Also control problems with my hand, You do make it look easy, I will try this anyway. I would really like to be able to make nice water painting.
Wow!! I love this way of 'sketching'. Thank you for the demo and I am sure going to try. Glad I stumbled upon your channel. Always looking for inspiration and I like the way you demonstrate. Thank you again.
Njce one David.I have never tried ink and wash ,but you inspire me.(Trouble is I can,t find a stick)You never seemed phased by the subject matter and produce some good paintings as a result.cheers
Great video, I am going to try these techniques on greeting cards and some artist trading cards. I have been wanting to use my Hake brush more, so I also look forward to doing some full size paintings!
***** I have learned that all art takes practice, I have been forced to learn patience Ha ha I am going to try this with my bamboo pen, I will let you know how it goes.
***** My mistake,You were right! Anyway the bamboo pen I got from Blick art supply worked great for this, it was so much fun. The Hake brush however did NOT go well on a differrent lesson of yours.. I think mine is 3 inches wide, maybe I need a 2 inch?
I loved your video! You do make it look easy :-) I'm very interested in the techniques you used for this painting. Awesome work!! Love the stick idea!! I have dabbled in watercolor and dip pen drawings and want to put them together....so your video is perfect for this idea! Thanks again, Leslie Dalton
Nice winter scene, Dave. I have tried this ink-stick method and found it very liberating, for some reason, much better than using ink pens, etc. on rough watercolor paper Thanks.
Ditto Donna Ridgway. It's beautiful. Who knew you could do so much with a stick. I used to watch a man who painted much the way you do, but not necessarily with the ink and stick. He did wet in wet, but clipped his paper, used a huge hake at the beginning and arrived at some amazing scenes. He used the tin plate just like you, and when he mixed his color on his palette he called them off just like you. Uncanny, really. Do you have a son who is a painter?
Hi Dave, really enjoyed watching you paint I find it very relaxing, I learn so much with your lessons; I love having a go my self but always find it hard starting a painting!! Perhaps you can give me some advice :)) Thanks Dave.
Thank you so much. I like monochromatic style - first part of the video 😀 but your final version is also very relaxing, good for meditation. A bit like Japanese drawings.
I'm always kind of surprised when I get a response. Thanks so much for your time and input. I did this particular video painting. Kind of messed up the sky so I turned it into a rosy sunset. I am actually kind of pleased with it. I haven't used water colors in over 25 years so it's not so bad. I'm learning a lot from you!
that was great!....what paper do you use?....and what was that lovely big Square brush you used to do the foliage on the trees?......would love to be as proficient as that.... marvelous, thanks so much..
Mr. Usher, what paper do you typically use for your line and wash paintings? I don't see it in the comments or hear it on the video or I wouldn't ask. Thank you!
My earlier ones were on Fabriano 130 lbs studio paper, about 30% rag and the rest cellulose. I mostly use that paper for oil paintings. Now I mostly use Saunders Waterford 90lbs Not, and pull it tight when it expands, a superb paper, and I always wet it before adding the watercolour washes. Thanks for asking, you're welcome. :)
Thank you for a rewarding lesson sir.
You are very welcome DW, thanks for posting. :)
Really nice Mr. Usher. It was fun to watch your composition develop.
You're welcome Donna, thanks for watching
Love it, beautiful, thank you for the lesson. Nancy R. North Bay, Ontario CANADA
Hi Nancy, thanks for watching, I did a couple of line and wash paintings recently. Regards from London, Dave. :)
Lovely marks and rigger use. I can never get the fineness of line with riggers. Love your work .
I might have a go at another line and wash, Phil. Thanks for watching this one from 8 years ago, glad you liked it.
I keep finding these little gems of yours every time I try a new medium, you have taught me so much! Thank you for being amazing and sharing your talent xxx
Love this. I absolutely love the muted tones of the British countryside, feels so homely. Thank you. Jane Brisbane. Australia.
Thanks for watching, Jane, this one goes back a long way. Our junior school teacher in the fifties was from Brisbane. Friday afternoons were wonderful; out would come his violin and 40 children would sing Waltzing Matilda followed by a large map of Australia. :)
Dave, you did it again with this lovely, expressive piece. I can almost smell the fresh winter air.

David,
I hope you are better. Edward Wesson used to take a ice cream stick and shape one end into a wedge shape to do his pen and wash paintings.
Thanx

I'm 66 and just started sketching and water colour, your video is fabulous, I've just bought some fine pens today and can't wait to use.
Wow Dave, just wow! I can't say anymore, anyone would be very proud to produce something like that, pride of place on anyone's wall :-) Thanks for the turtorial mate!

I think the line and wash method is my favorite!! I love this one! Don't be so hard on yourself. Your work is amazing! Thanks again for being a great teacher.
Looks great! You're my new tutor for the area in which I'm most weak: sketching. You have a wonderfullly light touch.
At each stage I think it is amazing, then you continue to add more detail and bring it to life. Incredible, thank you for sharing. I stop because I do not want to ruin mine if I have something decent, I need to keep going.
Watching a lot of your videos and feeling really inspired! :) Thanks.

Love your technique with limited colors and looseness. Thank you for sharing this with so many.

Nice simple picture 👍
Thanks for watching, Anthony. :)

Dave I have one question, Is ok to use black water paint if you don't have actual ink
So good. I'll be doing this one. Thanks so much.
I'm always kind of surprised when I get a response. Thanks so much for your time and input. I did this particular video painting. Kind of messed up the sky so I turned it into a rosy sunset. Thank you for some great ideas . Lovely pic .
Hi Sir ,I really Appreciate your work can you tell me how much pounds paper you are using in this video.
What do you do with these? Sell them?
Great line an wash
Very inspirational! 👌
Fantastic Dave and beautifully done too.. would this work with oils? I am having fun catching up and watching many of your earlier video's. 🤩🥰😇
I haven't done a line and wash for ages. Thanks for searching these out in the archive depths. :)
what i need for these effects, for this result? ink, water and pen?
Absolutely AMAZING! Thank you so much!
Thank you Maestro
Wow Dave thank you absolutely beautiful ..
Forgot to ask, do you use coloured ink too, i.e sepia, burnt umber, raw umber etc....for the trees?
that was great!....what paper do you use?....and what was that lovely big Square brush you used to do the foliage on the trees?......would love to be as proficient as that.... marvelous, thanks so much..
我想说,您画得真的太棒了!✨✨✨
that's awesome? But what's the pen you used to draw trees at the beginning of the video?
beautiful work, congratulations, ink is indelible?, using the first pen is mine? He could try to do something similar to practice?
thank you very much, you're very kind to respond and a genius painting.
Nice! How do you compare the acrylic ink to the Inida ink? BTW; I sent you a PM.
Mr. Usher, what paper do you typically use for your line and wash paintings? I don't see it in the comments or hear it on the video or I wouldn't ask. Thank you!

Dave, what ink are you using in this demo? Hard to hear and see when you show it to the camera.
