On "My Car Story" we're in the Suburbs of Phoenix AZ on 3-27-20.
We're looking at a 1949 Volkswagen Type 14A Hebmuller Cabriolet in Black & Maroon Paint. The car has the factory air cooled engine producing 25 HP.
The car's Owner is Ron Clarke. Ron’s had this car since 2004. Ron shares this early Volkswagen Beetle has some unique features like the “Pope’s nose” rear hood. He shares there are only about 50 cars like this model left.
ENJOY!
This must be one RARE Beetle!!.. I've never seen one like this!
I bet Jay Leno doesn't have one in his garage, huh?
Hi Thomas, You're right. Quite the treat to share this Beetle with you :-) Lou
The "Holy Grail" of Volkswagens! You come up with some exciting terms, Lou! Great showing and an essential part of car history! The Hebmuller Beetle.
Hi Jed Clampett, The "exciting terms" is a gift, however I'm only able to do it when I'm around cars :-) Lou
Holy Grail of VW's! Love it and the caretaker. I am familiar with these Lou but they are so rare I've never seen one. I'll be keeping an eye out for Ron cruising in his Cabriolet. I live in Az. also.
Hi David, High praise for this VW :-) Hope you see this one in town soon, Lou
Thanks for keeping the videos flowing through tough times..

That tool kit in the spare wheel is another 😎 feature too!
Probably not going to see that again.
My jaw hit the floor when I saw the tool kit... simply amazing!!
Hi Alex, Glad you're enjoying the details with me, Lou
Hazet is like the Mercedes among the toolmakers in Germany.
My first car was a 1968 VW bug (automatic stickshift). I was subscribed to Hot VWs magazine for years as a teenager. I always LOVED it when they did stories on Hebmullers. I loved the longer rear decklid. Rumor has it there were one or two hardtops floating around, too. (They looked like VW meets 40 Ford) ;) They are indeed the Grail. Rare as hen's teeth. Never thought I'd see a video on one! But, as always - Lou comes through.
Hi Todd Wall, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your 1968 Bug :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Very rare and in tip shop shape what I thought was the coolest thing had the original tool kit plus you got to drive it too cool Lou
Hi larry, Happy to share this rare treat. Probably will never see that tool kit in any other video. Driving it was clearly an unexpected wonderful treat for sure! Lou
I have never seen the VW Hebmuller Cabriolet before, very nice lines, it's classy and a treat to see. One of the very first VWs since WW2. Having owned a bug I always appreciate them. Thanks Ron it's a fantastic car, and great job Lou, thanks.
Hi Marten, Happy to read you appreciate this car & cool you owned a Bug too :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Lou
thanks Lou ! being a long time VW guy the hebmuller was always the best looking vw coach built IMO … my earliest VW was a 56 bug and I loved that car... I currently drive a 65 daily... I believe they called all really early bugs licence plate housings light popes noses ( pre 50 or so) and I think the trans should shift smooth in 2,3,4 but does have a non sycro first... thanks for the in-depth look and ive also seen fiberglass hebmuller kits so you can build one or if you wanted to make a pretty cool hot rod !
Hi

I couldn't drive it..... Don't know how you did!! I'd be so afraid of stacking it up or a soccer mom T-boning it.... So cool to see it in the right hands, Ron, for preservation of an icon known around the world.

Hi ImTheDaveman, Happy to read you find this bug "kewl" :-) Lou
@@loucostabile I have given this some powerful thought and realized that this must have been the 5th Beatle, the one that John, Paul, and George never told Ringo about. (the joke works better phoneticly)
Cars from back then we’re pretty loud compare to cars today but still like old cars better when they had taste thanks for the video Lou! 👍🏻
Hi Danny Al, Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) You're welcome, Lou

I may be wrong, but that Feller likes the German cars doesn't he? I see them sprinkled around the bacground. If I understood correctly you will do an episode with the 356s that are in the garage, Mr. Lou?
Hi Donald, You could say he likes the German cars :-) Regarding the others in the background....stay tuned, Lou
What a rare and interesting car. Really great and in my eye is very good looking. Thanks for sharing this!
Hi 2098elk, Happy to read you enjoy this rare treat with me :-) You're welcome, Lou
Great Beetle Lou ! Thanks for posting.
Thanks Rudy, glad you enjoy this rare bug :-)
VERY exquisite for a VW!!
Glad you like it :-)
Back in the mid '80s and into the '90s l was buying these VW stamped toolboxes and the equally fab _HAZET Tourist_ that could be used in the 356 or Beetle, for $300. They've appreciated since .....
Hi Ivan, Sounds like you've made a wise investment, Lou

Lou, in these times of pandemia, why bring up a bug?
Just kidding!
Can’t say it’s beautiful but a rare one indeed.
And it’s a 49, the year I was born!
"why bring up a bug?" That's FUNNY :-) Happy to read you appreciate the rarity of this car & bonus the year you were born too! Lou
Cool, my 1st car was a 61 bug that was a 40 hp 1200 cc, 61 was 1st year for full synchro transmission and 40 hp, previous was 36, mine had the reserve lever also, I think about 63 they broke down and put in a REAL gas gauge. Wondering if that's the ORIGINAL engine? They weren't a high mileage engine, maybe 60-70 miles and it would need a valve job or even less, LOTS of heat there and the #3 valves were kind of hidden from the cooling fan so that cylinder usually failed 1st.. as years went by they did a few changes. You know its so odd the following VW has because if you look at EARLY AND ORIGINAL VW commercials they were 1 step above a bus, you can see someone in a bus looking down at someone driving a VW in 1 commercial
Hi jim dandy, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your 61 bug :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Super rare to see that car in person
Hi Deliciouslife Tv, Glad to red you appreciate the rarity of this car :-) Lou
I just heard from a friend of mine who is an avid VW collector and enthusiast and he claims about 600 of these were built so they are indeed scarce..
Thank you for sharing your VW Friends knowledge.
I used to moonlight at my friend's body shop about 20 years ago. He had finished a customers classic VW and the man wanted him to restore his Hebmuller next. My friend turned down the job because he did not want to be responsible for a priceless car sitting in his shop for many months. I never got to see it. By the way I prefer classic American cars especially muscle cars but this Hebmuller is very rare in the U.S.
Hi Mark G, Thank you for viewing, sharing your story, and glad you appreciate the rarity of this car :-) Lou
Always learning something new on your channel Lou. Thanks 🏁
I'm learning all the time too. I find that's the fun part :-)
Cool Bug for sure Lou!! :-)
Hi Ed B., Glad to read you like this Bug :-) Lou
Beautiful
Happy to read you like the looks of this car :-)
Show! Belíssimo Volks. Parabéns pelo video Lou!
Hi Wiliam Camarda, Happy to read you enjoy this rare treat :-) Lou
You dont see many Volkswagen Beetles that early year model. Reminded me of the 1952 Max Hoffman Beetle that Mike Wolfe bought on the T.V. show American Pickers.
Hi PlymouthDuster 225, Happy to read you appreciate the rarity of this VW :-) Lou
Nice car Lou. Thanks for sharing
Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) My pleasure to share this one with you Big Charlie's Model Garage
@5:56 One came to Australia.....the Brown one that belong to a German guy l got to know. From memory he allowed a small group of guys to measure it to base the Aussie Heb replica on. Think they made about 20 or so before they ended production.
Hi Ivan, Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
Again, nice show! But now I need to research when did VW introduce the gas gauge? BTW really love the tool kit...
Quick research says it was introduced on July 31, 1961 for the 1962 model year. That's pretty late! My '66 VW had it, of course, but it tended to get stuck in place, and I would have to tap on it lightly to see the right amount. And trying to jump-start a six-volt when most cars were 12 was a huge mistake!
Thank you for viewing & sharing your research.
Wow what are the chances of this! I literally was just looking up hebs! They are
fantastically beautiful! And super super expensive!

Amazing 😮
Happy to read "Amazing" :-)
Being slightly picky here, but the semaphores should be ribbed that early. Our '53 Aussie Oval was delivered with ribbed type ( Built in December '53)....sold new in early '54 as one of the first 31 Beetles sent to Australia.

I always love the VW’s. Looks like a nice place but he’s awful close to the desert. Does he ever have a snake problem in his garage.
P R O, Happy to read you love the VW's :-) Not sure about the snake issue, Lou
Lou Costabile Well it looks like he’s in the middle of the desert with rattlesnakes just curious
Side profile of this Hebmüller offers almost perfect symmetry. Knowledgeable owner impresses throughout, but the plethora of badges attached to this car might better be displayed elsewhere.
Lou’s quite correct suggesting a four seater might indeed be called a “Viersitzer”. Hazet still manufacture the best tools for cars, new or old.
Hi Andrew, Glad to see you back on the Channel commenting. It's a treat, and been to long. Thank you for viewing & sharing, Lou
Cool little car.
Happy to read you think this car is cool :-)
When I was in the USAF stationed in Germany during the 80's I remember seeing several what I believe to be VW bugs (a bit larger if memory serves) only the rear quarter was elongated. In American terms it sort of had the look of a 30-40ish closed rumbleseat only I was under the impression Germans did this modification in order for the rear compartment to house a larger engine. Whether they were mass produced by a company or custom built by individuals I do not know. After leaving Germany I never saw one again. Curious to know what they were?

“What does that mean?
“zwei , two . Sitzer , seater“
Got it :-)
