Living in an area that’s primary focus is tourism can become a bit overwhelming over time. As foreigners, expats or retirees living in another country we want to have access to all the amenities that a tourist area brings while also being able to get away from the crowds and immerse ourselves in the local culture.
We did a lot of research into neighborhoods prior settling on a place and there were a lot of reasons why we loved visiting Puerto Vallarta. Just keep in mind that your perfect vacation area might not be the same as your perfect place to live. When we previously visited Puerto Vallarta for short durations we would always stay in the Romantic Zone and while we still love it down there and still visit from time to time, for a long stay or permanent move we chose to live in 5 de Diciembre.
The colonia of 5 de Diciembre starts at the north end of Puerto Vallartas famous malecon and extends up into the mountains. This wonderful neighborhood is a great place to explore and a top neighborhood to live in if you choose to move to Mexico. This is a great place in Puerto Vallarta to escape the crowds of tourist and immerse yourself in the local Mexican culture.
Stroll the cobblestone streets, eat some amazing street tacos and visit the 5 de Diciembre cemetery. There is so much to see and do here, be sure not to miss it on your next visit. There are nice grocery stores and supermarkets and there is always plenty to see and do. This is the perfect neighborhood for expats, foreigners and retirees to live as is close to everything, has great charms and is affordable.
We really can’t think of a single thing that we don’t like about living in the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood. Everyone has been extremely friendly since the day we arrived, we settled in quickly and it feels like home. Whether you a looking to move to Puerto Vallarta in 2021 or just looking for places to explore on you next vacation be sure to take a walk over and explore 5 de Diciembre for yourself.

Awesome, thank you! 5 D is a great neighborhood for retirees, just be aware that if you are too far up on the hill the roads can be very steep.

In July 2021 we moved to a one bedroom apartment a block from the beach in 5 de Diciembre, and we'll be here through November. We love this neighborhood, which is quiet and not touristy. All our neighbors are locals. Like you, we shop at Ley unless we're feeling extra energetic about walking up to the fish market. Thanks for this great video with all the beautiful video footage! I'm sending this to our families so they can see how lovely it is here.

Plenty of places for rent in the neighborhood and walking around you will see many rental signs.

@@lupitacajero7185 This is a really tough question to answer as there are so many variables. The 5D neighborhood has a wide variety of apartments that span just a few hundred dollars all the way up to luxury units that can run thousands of dollars a month.

Are all neighborhoods relatively safe in Puerto Vallarta or would you caution me to stay away from any neighborhoods there?

I've been researching PV for a few months and have fallen in love with it (virtually). From what I can see, 5 de Diciembre is the best place to live for both quality of life and great value. I’m not quite sure where 5 de Diciembre ends and the Romantic Zone begins. I chose a place at Calle Treinta y Uno de Octubre. I will be there for a month to explore. See you soon.
This is right on the edge between 5 D & Centro Neighborhoods, it is a great location. Romantic Zone is about a 10-15 walk to the south.

That's a really hard question! Breakfast: Lolita's and Layla Dinner: Pepe's, Burrito Beach, Menos. Those are just a few. There really are so many great restaurants here!

Thanks for your comment. As far as real estate goes the area has the widest selection of prices in Vallarta as there are everything from tiny apartments to luxury condos on the hill. Prices are considerably lower than in romantic zone or choncas chinas.
Can I ask how much you guys pay a month for rent? My husband & i are planning to move there within 2 years & are very interested in the price difference of different areas in PV. HI Chanel, so we were paying $1200 for our rooftop 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment. It was 3 blocks to the beach and the malecon but back just far enough for quiet. Prices in the neighborhood range from much lower than we were paying for ground floor apartments up to thousands for luxury high rises on the hill with a pool. We were in that apartment for 5 months. If you rent for 6-12 months you can negotiate a better rate. As we moved down in the middle of pandemic we wanted to have a place secure. We could have found a better price when in Vallarta. Doing it again I would pre-arrange just for a short period of time and look for a longer term rental once here. Thanks for subscribing, we hope you find all of our vids helpful to your plans!

Yes, I find it even a little more oppressive. Being further south the sun is more intense.

No trade wind, but a nice breeze a lot of the time if you are near the beach.

Hi, We have noticed a few days that have been hazy but seems to be getting better. Spring has sprung here!
Would you say that in the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood, people in wheelchairs can get around for the most part?
Actually the 5 de Diciembre area is probably not the best with a wheelchair. There are many hills and the sidewalks are often in poor condition. The romantic zone might work better as much of it is flat and the sidewalks are newer.

Hello Don and thank you for your comment. There is a large selection of apartments ranging from very cheap local style apartments to high end condos. There is really something for every budget. I would suggest you join the 5 de Diceimbre Facebook page as they regularly post apartments for rent in the area.
