If this is a duplicate explanation, please forgive me, but I've not seen it in any of the comments I've read thus far.
Alec Wildey counted Mariusz Duda and Steven Wilson as his two favorite musicians, and started street teams for both Riverside and Porcupine Tree, hence how they came to know of him. According to Wilson, Wildey worked his butt off promoting their music, and they both really appreciated his efforts, which included many hours of pasting concert fliers all over town.
When he was diagnosed with cancer, he requested that, as his favorite musicians, they put one of his poems to music, and perform it together. That is how this song came about.
Alec Wildey wrote the poem, Mariusz Duda created the music, and he and Wilson produced the song together. So Wildey's name should be credited on the song as well.
They had hoped to complete it in time for Wildey to hear it, but such was not to be, and he died shortly before they finished. And, in his honor, all proceeds for the song went to cancer research and treatment.
A beautiful tribute indeed.

I am pretty sure Geoff Keiffer started the PT Street Team (I am friends with him).
I had the pleasure to hang out with Alec and his parents on a couple of occasions at RosFest. You wouldn’t be able to find a more genuine person than Alec. He was always full of wonderment and excitement. He could and would make friends with everyone around him. He was too young to go to RosFest alone, so his parents would accompany him to shows. His death was tragic, only made worse when his wife committed suicide after his death. The whole thing makes me sad to this day.
He also sent a poem to Giancarlo Erra of Nosound (another band he was a huge fan of), who turned the poem into a song as well.

Musical tribute to my friend Alec Wildey who died before his song was recorded. He was a fan of Steven Wilson and Mariusz Duda who wrote the music to accompany Alec’s lyrical poetry. I miss you Alec you will live forever in the music you love ❤️
I never had the privilege of knowing Alex. I regret it. What a wonderful songwriter. May he live forever, with Steven's and Mariusz's music.
I think what gets lost in this, is that Mariusz wrote the music, but more importantly, found the right poem, and was able to put the right phrasing into to song /melody, a truly challenging and masterful feat. The production has Stevens touch all over it, but it definitely is a Duda song. A SW produced Riverside album would be off the charts.Pray these two collaborate again!

Marisuz didn't find it. Alec wrote to Steven and talked about it. After talking to Steven about it they ended up being email pals. I wish Allie could have heard it.

Mariusz and Steven, what a beautiful song and a brilliant collaboration. I discovered these two geniuses during covid. I can’t stop listening to them. I will see Riverside in April and Porcupine Tree in June. Both in Manchester. I cannot wait!
I was at both gigs. Both were superb. Even the trains showed up!

Yes that’s is probably true, but great to hear their music has followers in your wonderful part of the world. I guess we are guilty of taking these live shows for granted here in the uk. Really hope you get chance to see them in the future somehow.

I paid for it. I've listened to this probably over 100 times myself. Amazing song and amazing story. Alec's death was so unfortunate, I hope his family is doing ok.
Many, many years ago, I was introduced to this obscure band and weird guy no one had ever heard of, by a very good friend. How little could I have imagined how much my life would be changed by Steven's work and genius, over these decades. Today, my good friend is dead, and work like this honors her memory so perfectly. I wish she could hear it. Some part of me thinks that maybe, she can. Thanks for putting this up. Now, I have to go buy it!

Just found this song and read into the backstory, I now love it even more. So sad to read of Alec's story, 26 is no age to have to go through such an ordeal and my heartfelt condolences go out to his friends & family. I gather that Cycy passed away as well but I cannot find any information.. can anyone fill me in? May their souls be together for eternity, RIP Alec & Cycy
I've always loved this song I had no idea this is Alex in the photo, he looked like such a beautiful person very sad but that he never got to hear his words put to such timeless music by his idols . I can say though for certain that his energy is still out there he served his purpose in this realm and has gone on to a higher level.

Riverside are my current favourite band. Love Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilsons music as well. Someone mentioned Mickael Akerfelt as well a collaberation with all three .

Btw for those who weren't aware of the song and video Giancarlo Erra did with Alec - it's also beautiful. One day Giancarlo was discussing it and Vinny from Anathema was there. He jumped in and added so vocals. Alec really wanted that.

I've read that they didn't want this song shared on social network, but maybe they meant while it was possible to donate to a good cause by buying the record...I've never heard the song before and it's beautiful, and I've just tried to find the song on Burningshed and it's not there...if people hear the song they'll find out about this young man who died of cancer and know that both Wilson and Duda did something to help the fight against this terrible thing

Doesn't anyone even know who Mariusz us? I didn't see one mention of his work with Riverside. Beside SW and PT, they are the best prog band performing today, hands down. I've been a huge fan of Duda's work with Riverside for years. Seen them a few times and they were amazing. Check them out if you're not familiar with them. Great stuff.
