Exactly what a real rock and roll band sounds like playing a great song. No overdubs, no obvious processing of sound. Just plug in, sing and play like Zeus intended. Thanks so much for this.
@@richbailey8174 Tastefully using a compressor, a booster, a reverb or delay pedal, etc. in your chain does not compromise the guitar's basic sound, but may enhances it. In any event, notwithstanding their "pretty full pedal boards", we have no way of knowing which, if any pedals were engaged during this performance. I suppose that they play many different kinds of songs, some of which may requite some OD, delay etc. that they only use when required. Anyway, to me simply "plugging in" includes adding tasteful effects if that is what is wanted to create the desired sound. For this '60s, Beatles-type of song, just a little compression and reverb would seem to be most appropriate.
@@richbailey8174 That was just some intentional overstatement for humour. Anyway, I have come to appreciate a more natural sound on electric guitar and voices these days, and that song epitomizes it. It may have become something of a cliché, but at least for me, less often is more.
You guys rock !! I'm a 61 yr old rocker and you guys hit the nail on the head with this song. Thanks for the video !! I have worn out this movie just for this song
Tom Hanks made this movie. He and I are about 9 months apart in age. He was successful in what he was trying to do, which was capture the zeitgeist (I hate that word) of 1965. You either remember it or you don't, but there was a moment after the Beatles arrived, but before drug/hippie culture took over, when parents were still parents, and rock was still junior showbiz. I was reaching the zenith of boyhood at that time, around age10 or 11, which is that empire of childhood moment before everything collapses into adolescent fear and uncertainty. And so was Tom Hanks. And so was this country. It's the last time the world made sense, and Tom Hanks captured it.
I'm not sure if this performance could have been any better. I thought it was PERFECT. Very, very nice. Great song, great singing, great drums, nice fat P-Bass tone, perfect amount of guitar twang... Nice work gentleman...
A third harmony voice was needed to replicate the original recording, but the drummer did a fine job with good pitch and note selection. Mix nit pic - the lead guitar was a bit too present on the verses. However, the solo was perfect. The Fountains of Wayne ("The Wonders") well-demonstrated how simplicity and spare arrangement of a good song makes a great recording. The Beatles and other Invasion bands taught them and us that lesson. This "The Wonders" played and sang this song perfectly.
+Brunna Neves Me too Brunna. It's one of the few hit songs (in the old sense) that came out in the '90s. I think I love this version better than the other guys...
Nao entendo como eh que nao se ouve falar de voces por ai... o som eh muito bom caras... parabens e muito sucesso pois voces merecem... grande trabalho!!!
You guys have got more talent and less drama than just about every other 'garage band' out there. Very well played and ..really....more tubes ! Come on,......(more ! ).
Realmente, nunca tinha visto um cover desta música. Se a banda do filme tivesse mesmo existido, teria sido um grande hit de sucesso. Mais uma vez, parabéns pelo cover.
I have never liked covers of songs it's always been the original from me people usually butcher the original song when they try to cover in your case this is fantastic really really good job much enjoyed
Wow! I've heard other recreate 'That Thing You Do' and you guys are great too! The film recreates the sound of 1964 and you guys have captured it perfectly too! Check out the REO Brothers as well. You guys need to make some records! Wouldn't mind putting this on my turntable and gettin' down!
Great job, guys. I realize we're eight years on from when you posted, and I hope you are all well and still playing. Each of you do a terrific job on your parts, but I especially want to commend the bass player. (T.B. Player?) The way he observes and embraces the "spaces" between notes and lines sets him above many bassists. Many non-musicians won't recognize things like this, but they'll come away thinking what a good overall performance the band made. Thanks for posting.
Good Ear... Personally I don't think anything replaces the Rickenbacker in the original Album on this and 2 or 3 other recordings on the soundtrack. Not a Les Paul or SG song...
You nailed it! Bass is the glue that holds this song together and your bass player not only nailed it, but you've got the volume set correctly to enhance the bass line! Of course the other three were excellent, as well... lead guitar player needs a Rickenbacker, but he's got enough foot pedals to emulate a Ricky and I saw him use one for the lead solo and then back out of it for rhythm work. Good job! (Yeah, drummer needs to wear 'shades' for this song!)
AWESOME JOB GUYS !! I just finished watching the movie for the 100th time. Your cover is about as close as it can possibly get to the movie version. I am in shock, your band should of done this song for the movie, honestly. Keep up the good work and post another song from the movie, you were incredibly great
I was trying to recall where I heard these types of harmonies and chord changes one day, when it occurred to me the whole sound is totally a Bad Finger melody. Who got their sound from a beatle, Paul McCartney.....But I still love it !
Impressive musicianship and vocals. That is a terrific cover of the song. Not only is the performance very good but so is the audio. Good balance between the various instruments, the lead vocals and backup vocals. I agree that your percussionist should wear shades when you cover a Wonders song. :) I would like to suggest you play two Wonders songs back to back, one leading right into the other, if you play this at any gigs (maybe Dance With Me Tonight or I Need You). I think that would be well received. Just a thought. Thank you for uploading.
“Dance With Me Tonight” is definitely a Wonders song, but “I Need You” is technically on of Jimmy’s hits for Playtone Records with his group “The Heardmen”. I wonder how many time Jimmy’s second group were announced as the “Hear-Des-Men” or the “H-Eardrums-Man”? That guy never could just spell the names as the known and correct spelling of the words. It always had to have “chords” or “notes” or “hear” in it somehow. “How about the Chordvettes, you know, like the chords in our music?” - James Mattingly III
HEY Great Job !! You Guys must be mighty fine musicians to get your cover that close to the original. But I agree. The drummer has to have those Foster Grants lol. btw I just subscribed.
sorry change my mind.. better then "the Wonders" this is the way it should have been done.. recorded PERFECTLY!! Don't ever loose this sound!.. YOU ROCK!!

Both backup guitarists have pretty full pedal boards.....:)

10 years ago. wow. its the best take by a modern looking band that I have heard. Crisp, the music and singing spot on. I loved it
