How things have changed and you are offering some dam good advice to anyone starting out. Your advice is quick , precise and knowledgeable , no wasted information or idle chatter. Today a person can start out with gear never dreamed of back when I started in the late 50's. I used ( what was available ) my Dad's WW2 Stainless Steel U.S.A. Canteen Cup and Mess kit. I still have them but today all my cooking gear is Titanium since I go Ultra Light. Spot on , the Human gear GoBites Duo is really great.
It’s amazing how much things have changed! I was just telling a friend that even in the last 10 years things have changed so much since he last went out! Thanks for the compliments! They mean a lot!
the mcflurry spoon idea blew my mind when someone first showed me it! But... now I use the human gear duo... no more having to find sticks for me! haha
But WAIT! There IS more! Right now you could win this ENTIRE cook kit... that's right, this ENTIRE cook kit! Just head over to my most recent video to see how you, or someone you love could walk away a proud winner of this cook kit and SO MUCH MORE *conditions apply, must be legal drinking, breastfeeding men and parents of small onions ought not to apply due to awkwardness...*
Another option: My Tomshoo 750ml titanium cookpot comes with a lid and I can fit the small fuel canister in it, as well as a Mini Bic, matches, stove, cleaning cloth, scouring pad, scraper and can opener. I can slide my GoBites down the side of the bag. The cookpot w bag costs $20 right now on AlliExpress, and may sit a little more stable on the stove than the option in the vid because it's closer to the spread of the stove.
A.J. Hart that doesn’t sound like a bad set up. And this pot actually sits quite well, only issue was it was empty and the plastic coated handles off set the weight of the pot a bit that being said, a smaller base is always great! 👍👍😁
@@BackcountryForward One mistake I made early on was getting a kit where the main cookpot was more wide than deep and had a bail (bucket handle) on it, but no handle on the side. So, after you get done boiling the water, you pick it up by the handle and everything spills out on one side because the pot wasn't deep enough for the weight of the contents to keep it upright when carried by the handle. Decent and inexpensive cook kit (one of the Ozark Trail aluminum ones) but how that design flaw gets out of R & D is beyond me. My second cook kit was based on modifying the $15 Stanley one that comes with the green cups that a lot of people are big on. It was great but not the lightest, so when I saw you could get the unbranded, unfinished Toaks titanium stuff under the Tomshoo banner on AlliExpress for $20 I jumped on it, and it was a pretty simple substitution. Just make sure you're not in a hurry when ordering from them. My pot arrived in a couple of weeks, but give yourself a couple of months in general because they're almost always shipping from China and aren't in much of a hurry.
A.J. Hart I’ve done a lot of looking at titanium sets on Ali... but never saw the tomshoo ones. So that’s awesome to know. Already checked them out when you mentioned them!
@@BackcountryForward I saw it there the other day for just shy of $20. You have to be careful because a lot of times they have multiple items (in this case it might be different sizes) in the same listing so you have to make sure to click on the size you want (like how Amazon has you click on a size, color, etc.). And I believe sometimes Tomshoo sort of disappears and another generic brand sort of steps in for awhile. Maybe they have some cyclical thing going on. The 750ml appears to be Toaks right down to the handle design. It doesn't come with the same finish, apparently, but it does have the measurements ticked off on the body of the pot. At least, mine does. On mine, the little handle on top of the lid eventually came off, but a little of the right kind of glue should fix that. I've gotten a couple of solid dry bags from there as well. I think the site is best used to order things you don't actually need right now, but are maybe looking to upgrade/change to. I might next look for a camping quilt there to see what they have, although WalMart now has one at $20 (and, it's not like I can't just cover myself in my unzipped Aeigismax sleeping bag and accomplish about the same thing). The famous Costco quilts haven't been around for awhile from that store, and aren't that budget-friendly via eBay. I think Costco was only selling them in pairs at the end.
Great video, love the enthusiasm and totally agree , the new backpacker is working to a strict budget, it's more important to get out there and see and experience stuff than spend hundreds if not a thousand bucks on the latest and greatest gear, which in some cases may not work for you. Sometimes the learning curve involves breaking equipment. I am currently using a mix of gear I have from the 1980's/90's and car camping stuff from 2000 on, the family thing happened lol. The mission this year is to reduce my base weight from 22lbs to something closer to 17lbs at minimal cost, as most of the equipment needs duplicated for my 15 year old daughter who has been the main motivator in moving away from car camping and (for me anyway) back into hiking. The cooking system is something I have been looking at closely, present stuff is stainless steel, love the durability, coupled with a couple of small S/S Lixada folding stoves, works well for car camping and is backpackable. I haven't weighed them but think the weight will be somewhere near a 1lb, most likely just over (not including gas canister). Present thinking is to move to titanium as prices have really dropped in the last few years and is now a worthwhile purchase. BRS Titanium Stove £12 weighs 1oz. (Bought one last year, fits in a pot and works very well, lots of hours on it). Generic long handled Titanium spoon 8" long £3 weighs 1oz. Tomshoo/Lixada 650ml Titanium Pot with Lid £18 weighs 4oz. Tomshoo/Lixada 750 ml pot with Lid is similar price but weighs 5.3 oz perhaps 4.5oz if you cut the bale arm off) Total weight for £33-£35 equals 6oz (or 7.3oz with the bigger pot)!!!, throw in a cut down flexible cutting board from IKEA, a sponge/scrubbie and a windbreak perhaps another two to three ounces, so somewhere in the 1/2lb bracket with the 650ml pot, lightweight achievable at reasonable cost. I'm unsure what the exchange rate is, but perhaps 40 dollars US? From what I have read Lixada and Tomshoo are made in the same factory and in looking at them they appear very similar, the Lixada lid certainly has a notch cut out on the lid ring the same as the Toaks, so the lifting ring can be left in the upright position for lifting. Both the 650ml & 750 ml pots will accept a 100gram gas canister and BRS stove. Anyway, I don't think titanium is out of the question these days for the beginning backpacker in terms of investment and weight savings. If the worst happens and hiking is not for them, then reselling the Titanium as a complete cook system shouldn't be too hard with a fair chunk of the spent money being recoverable. Edit to add: apologies for being so verbose, I had no idea the above was so long until I read it back! It's all The Best Backpackers fault, he pointed me in this direction with the toiletries tag!!!
I absolutely LOVED reading this the first time I DID... but I thought I responded, and turned out I didn't! My apologies! But WOW, thanks for all this great info. Things really have changed over the years. I think you'd be surprised how heavy those stainless steels are. I've also been looking at the lixada and tomshoo pots. I was going to upgrade this year, but decided to be a bit more intentional with this kit, and in the end I was pretty pleased with it! I still may upgrade next year. I Can't speak to all those prices, but I know when I broke it down I was looking closer to $75-90 CA for all the upgrades: - pots were around the $50 range (I want a 900-1100ml one) - the brs 3000 is $22ish - To add a mug (which would only make sense if I'm going UL was another $30 (or I could get a 750ml +450ml combo for $65 - plus the spoon and fixings, it ended up being $75-90 Still, quite affordable! Who knows... maybe next year I'll do an update to my cook kit! Thanks again, always love gear talk with a fellow gear junky! Keep Moving Forward!

Backcountry Forward yes! This video and the other video video of the big three budget options. I had just been considering if a lid was worth having in a set. Good video. Should check out the Stanley cook pot for about $12 to $14US at Walmart. Includes 2 10oz cups (I leave one at home). Has room for fuel can and stove and is pretty light.
I've seen the Stanley around a lot. Only kicker there is the weight. But without a doubt it is a great price! Might have to test it one day for the audience! Keep Moving Forward!

Hi! Great review! I have exactly the same kit from Wolfyok allmost four years now and i am using it exactly like you, with the only difference i take with me the pan because i like bacon ! And also i replaced the stove last year with the MSR pocket rocket, because at this stove that was included, the four legs became very loose and it was not stable and safe when cooking! I dont think i will ever change this kit with a brand, its perfect.
It’s a GREAR kit! And I definitely bring the pan every now and again for bacon. My stove is still kicking strong, except I’ve had the reverse issue, the legs have gotten stiff! Thanks for the comment! Keep Moving Forward!

Wow! That is SUCH a huge compliment! Thank you for your confidence! Have you seen any of my other videos, which was your favorite? What types of videos do you think I should put out more?
Thanks! I’ve been very impressed with how versatile it is! And considering that buying a Similar sized Toaks Titanium Pot would only save me 3oz and cost me nearly $30 (plus no frying pan), I think it’s the best bang for buck!
0m3n well that’s good to know! That actually is a mini bic, I’m glad it’s one of the more reliable ones! It’s actually already a redundant back up as the stove has an igniter, and I bring waterproof matches in my emergency kit.
Thank you for sharing your setup. I have not experienced this myself, but have read that using a windscreen with a canister stove can be dangerous because it may direct heat toward the canister itself...Is there any truth to that?
Yes, there are lots of sources say this (and lots of people say been doing it for years with no problems). If you hunt around there are several designs where the windshield either hangs off the pot covering the flame but not the canister, or ones that go out from the stove, round the pot but avoid the can. It is one of the reasons I use a remote canister stove - so the canister sits outside the windshield.
Why not just use a bottle pot that sits in the bottom of your water bottle pouch because then it just takes the same space your water bottle would take anyways....
Holy Crap! The 3 D printed feet for the fuel tank are amazing. Is there any way you can connect me with Kyle to get the file for those? My son is just getting into backpacking and we have a very similar stove/cooking set up. He is in a 3D print club at high school and they are always looking for new projects. Great vid and new sub!

Amazon is a silly place. You have 500 different Chinese retailers selling the same product from one manufacturer, each under different brand "names" that make absolutely no sense. I found an action cam selling under the brand name "APEMAN" which is probably the funniest I've seen so far. I just try to find a style of widget that I like, then buy from the cheapest "brand". It's all so bizarre.
Please, send me the poor frying pan. I hate oatmeal and love eggs and veggies for breakfast. yes it's heavier, yes it wastes time... But..... It's my favorite.
I've been using the GSI Pinnacle Soloist for four years now. Review here: ruclips.net/video/VueoAm-4OzI/видео.html . I find it is a good balance between light, versatile, small packing footprint and super functional.
It's a good option for sure! But not always in everyone's budget. One day I'd like to test it out because I know a lot of beginners go for something like that! Ps. Just as an FYI I'll keep this link here, but just so you know RUclips can sometimes flag link sharing in comments as spam and send them to the video creator to approve or remove the comment. It also isn't looked very highly upon in the RUclipsrs community. So you might find a lot of your comments "hidden". Just so you know. But, I see you're growing 😄 ... I was there once too! and a lid is KEY! So helpful. Plus it lets you cook over campfires should you have them without getting TOO many bits of ash inside!
I'm glad you found it helpful!
Keep Moving Forward Alee!
Backcountry Forward yeah, I mean you do. The most recent one about backpacking in the cold, was helpful and engaging too. Just do you man! You were created a certain way, be free in that. :)
Alee H absolutely and always! Thanks Alee!
Keep Moving Forward! 😁
Granola bar challenge accepted! Stick hacks are awesome. I think the stick spoon is my fave of the utensil options.
Right?! I even tried cutting notches in one to make it a spork but it get breaking 😢
Ps. That granola bar comment came from a legit comment over on H.A. Where a guy said he brought 12 granola bars on a 3 day trip... his FIRST trip 😂😂
@@BackcountryForward only 12!? I'd eat them all on the first day. Haha.
@@JustinOutdoors me too! I told him I bring 12 for snacks on a 3 day trip! Lol
I love watching videos on hiking, camping and bushcrafting cookware 😺
Well hey, I love making videos on hiking, camping and bushcraft cookware .... okay so my bushcraft skills might still be “hatching” but I’ll get into it soon I swear! I’d love to have you along for the journey!
Cheers! 😸
I just bought the cook kit online. Thanks for the great tip!
Sorry for such a delay! I hope you like it! Thanks for the comment! How's it working so far?
Keep Moving Forward!
This channel is great! Can't wait to start hiking
Accounting Stuff it’s about time someone holds this budget backpacker to account! You let me know if my numbers ever don’t add up!
Enjoy the journey, it never stops!
Awesome video!!!! Cheers from Newfoundland!!!
Robin Squires thanks b’y! 😄
Backcountry Forward Keep up the awesome channel. She’s awesome me son!!!! :)
Since 1983 i only Cook on car gas unleaded with An msr or sigg burner. I even have An Coleman double. my car runs on IT, so i have An extra gallon in a jerrycan.
Sometimes super light Wright .... Militairy mess_tins. Otherwise A Cook set as shown. I AM 63 now, so some experience. Greetings from the Netherlands!
Wow! I’ve never heard of cooking on gasoline! I hope you stick around on the channel I really appreciate those with more experience!
Really enjoyed this review, like that you kept it simple and cheap, well done.
Flying W California simple and cheap is the way to go! Too many people over complicate things, which just keeps others from getting outdoors! Thanks!
Solid video man!
Thanks Man! I hear we might have a collab in our future! You up for some next level crazy?
I love your energy man. Subscribed
Cole Rikolov Thanks so much! I definitely can’t be accused of being “mono-tone” 😂😂
Great video Jesse, very informative.
Thank you! I do my best! What set up do you use?
@@BackcountryForward I have the same one, but without the stove. I have only used mine for camping. I agree with you 100%, it's a great little kit.😁
@@LIVEONALBERTA Well would you look at that! We're cook kit buddies!
@@LIVEONALBERTA Well would you look at that! We're cook kit buddies!
@@BackcountryForward Yep, great minds think alike😉
You're right, the cook system is the last part of my gear that I haven't obtained.
Right?! It’s easy to not think about, but it’s an important piece of gear! Best of luck in your decision!
Really liked the mcflurry spoon idea. Had me stop the video just to like it and comment haha. Great video 👌🏽
Yah it definitely helped on my first few backpacking trips! It’s a great little hack! Thanks for the comment!

I stockpile taco bell spokes. I keep one as a backup to my fitnesscity spork.
Good for you bro. Enjoyed it! Keep up the good work :)
Thanks so much for the encouragement! I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Hope you found it helpful!
What is the diameter of the pan? Thanks
The diameter is 6.25”!
Hope that helps!
@@BackcountryForward thanks. 😊😊
You are such fun to watch and funny as well...Excellent source of basic(with a little luxury thrown in) necessities on the trail... you got this down to a fine art!!! I’d love to hike with you someday...I’m sure I’d keep any Bears 🐻 away with all my Raucous laughter at you and your funny “ways”...HeeHaw
Keep it up 👍🏻 good guy!!!!!😆😆😂🤪😆😉😅😁😉
haha, thanks mom! Love you. (Ps. you don't have to pretend to not be my mom... I'm sure the internet people would figure it out one way or another).
Thanks for watching! Thanks for your support!
this channel is gonna get 100k subs for sure
Wow! That is SUCH a huge compliment! Thank you for your confidence!
Have you seen any of my other videos, which was your favorite? What types of videos do you think I should put out more?
Great Job!
Thanks!
Can you disconnect the fuel if you don’t use it up
This is a great question! Yes you can! Just easily twist the stove off the can. That’s how you should usually store and carry it anyway!
Great review of your cook kit. I really like the fork ,spoon combo. Great price on your cook kit too. Cool video 👍
Thanks Jason, I’m always one for keeping costs down!
curious what you can cook with this small device. lol
I’ve done curry, stew, bacon and eggs, Mac and cheese, side kicks meals, and plenty and plenty of dehydrated meals! 😄
@@BackcountryForward that's awesome~
great video looks like solid starter kit..
Thanks! I’ve been very impressed with how versatile it is! And considering that buying a Similar sized Toaks Titanium Pot would only save me 3oz and cost me nearly $30 (plus no frying pan), I think it’s the best bang for buck!
not sure i would trust a cheap little lighter as a back up. a mini bic is cheap and is typically more dependable than others
Thanks for you question. I have not heard that. But I'd like to do some research to see what I can find. I'll get back to you!
Your vids are awesome man 😂💗
Thanks so much!
Great info
Subbed! Found you through Think Media comment you left for Sean.
-Nick
Ride Alongside haha awesome! Good to have you here!
Why not just use a bottle pot that sits in the bottom of your water bottle pouch because then it just takes the same space your water bottle would take anyways....
Not sure I know what a bottle pot is!
Nesting bottle and pot combo, just look up on amazon "nesting bottle and pot"
MightySmiley gotcha. I don’t use a bottle. I have a bladder or a smart water bottle. So that would actually take up space for me.
Hey Scottyplug! Thanks for joining the journey! Send me an email or a Facebook message and I’ll try to get you that file. My buddy Kyle is going through a bit of a rough time with his dying dog, so I can’t guarantee a quick response but I’ll do my best!
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Gotta luv Amazon...the price is 108.00!!!i have seen this many times where price has no logic.
That’s odd. I know prices have really been fluctuating with all this covid stuff! Is it still that high? I’ll have to double check?
“Little ladle scoop thing uma jigger”😉🤣😂I can’t wait for you to throw stuff!! 😳OFF😳ON...you’re incredibly engaging, and seem totally comfortable in front of the cam. You’re a natural! Tons of info, looks like a dandy kit. ITS A HACK, PEOPLE🤣😂🤣 There are too many key phrases...I can’t keep up!! WELL DONE, well made, well goodness, you’re just a breath of fresh air😉🙋♀️Lisa and Rick 🙋♂️
Following The Agee's 😆😂😁 thanks so much Lisa and Rick!
J A haha I have the Apeman! It’s a strange world for sure! But I love how much more affordable it is!
I’m working on a video for that right now!
had to watch twice to figure out how you smash that much info into a 10 min video!
Matty Outdoors haha are you sure it wasn’t cus I was talking too fast? 😆
Thanks man!
Now I have an excuse to eat a McFlurry.
Who needs an excuse?! 😆
Please, send me the poor frying pan. I hate oatmeal and love eggs and veggies for breakfast. yes it's heavier, yes it wastes time... But..... It's my favorite.
Hahaha! I still have mine and use it occasionally... especially for eggs and bacon sometimes. Those breakfasts are golden!
And between Canucks what's a little link sharing!
Keep doing what you're doing! Best of luck this year as you grow your channel!

You need the pan
Really? What for?
I definitely keep it for the odd occasion, but don’t use it regularly. What do you use it for?
the cook kit is 110$!!
Crazy! During covid a ton of prices shifted due to demand and low supplies. Should be back to normal!
goddamn did you do a bump in the woods😂
😂 no, my parents just dropped me as a child one too many times.
Take it down a notch bud Very informative vid but I think you are trying too hard No cap
Haha glad you found it informative! It’s definitely a journey to find the balance between engaging and not overwhelming ... I think I may have gotten it a bit better In some of my newer videos 😄
It’s always a process. I appreciate the feedback!

You sound like your doing a commercial... Advice turn it down a notch. You can talk to us normal. Otherwise good review lol.
Enthusiasm seems fake
Hahah. I admit, it may have been a bit over the top in this video. But I assure you, in general, I'm just a really enthusiastic (and loud) guy! You can ask my girlfriend. lol
The quality of the product though is great!

Quit the adderall
Lol if I quit it I’d be even WORSE. Wouldn’t I?
