No tape. Denatured alcohol. If you run the bead smoothly and spray with denatured alcohol. It wipes away perfect. Plus that tape peels the silicone away from the tile at the top. If you use tape. After you pull it you need to run your finger over it one more time. To seal that top edge
Exactly
Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) works better than soapy water as the anti sticky solvent. You have to remove the tape while the caulk is still “wet” to get the good clean edge.
🎯Yes It Does!
The instructions on my silicone caulk specifically said NOT to use soapy water.
Scroll through the comments and you'll see a number of people saying you're supposed to use isopropyl alcohol or denatured alcohol and never soap
I don’t know if I trust the soapy water trick. I’ve seen videos debunking the effectiveness of this. If you don’t do a 100% perfect consistent bead and it isn’t 100% airtight in whatever you’re caulking, then you spray the soapy water, and then run your finger/tool it; it isn’t going to fill in/adhere properly to any spots that weren’t covered from the initial bead. If there is one little tiny spot/crack you didn’t perfectly cover- it isn’t going to seal and be fully waterproof after spraying the soapy water & tooling now.
Fill the tub with water, so if the bathtub shifts when it’s filled, it won’t break the seal 💪
Wouldn't it break the seal when you empty the tub
@@MrSamdabeast if anything it would squish it tighter
Our tubs are huge ... they are garden tubs that a 500 lb 600 lb person could easily sit in and still be comfortable ... it's basically almost the size of a Jacuzzi except no jets .
This is why I don't take the kind of baths that I used to and instead use much less water but it's not the same experience if you want a really luxurious bath where you could slouch down and have the water going up to your neck as you're just wasting a LOT of WATER as the tub is just too big .
Taping the edge first seems to be the game-changer... i hate to tape, but I'm never sorry when i take the time to do it.
Great, and beats a half hour video!
thank you
When you remove the tape it lifts the edge of your silicone, reducing the effectiveness of the seal. This will cause your silicone edge to wear away and fail prematurely.
True. I like the clean lines it provides but it gets dirty easier and doesn't last as long.
After you remove the tape you have to hit it again with the finger
Not if you remove the tape while it's still wet...
@@inuchan74 I literally just did some caulking today and it does leave that right when you remove it… I do caulking everyday and you always have to run a finger after removing the tape
@@inuchan74that applies for painting not caulking. If you primed it then resetting is not neccesary
Great advice
Never EVER EVER do this, 2 big mistakes here. Tape will create a lip which the water will sip behind and soapy water prevents the caulk to adhere 100%. Use a caulking tool kit :). Stop sharing bad information, i lost $$ because of this...
Some people are saying you can use isopropyl alcohol .
Some say you can use the tape and some say you can't ... I still don't know who knows what they're talking about as I know nothing about this stuff but I find it fascinating to know even though I don't need it
Great advice... Thanks.
DIY tips
WOW thanks 😊
Very cool! Why do you spray with soapy water?
I need a specific video on how to run masking tape half an inch around the tub 😅
Always tape from point to point 👍
Very good
I would use sanded silicon grout
Is there a sealer i can use on wet shower floor
Always hated caulking
Worst task ever… especially cleaning out all the old moldy calk.
@@millatym04TRUTH! UGH, digging out that nasty old caulk ... blehhh. But now that I finally got it all out, I'm committed and HAVE to finish!
I do about 400 showers and toilets a year at our hotel and it's really quick and easy when you get the hang of it! Not bad at all! Easier to just use microban caulk that cleans with water since they mold at the same rate! We've tested every single kind of caulks and silicones and they all mold roughly the same amount of time don't be fooled by these videos of mold free products!
This is the 9th vid in a row of this content, and this man right here is the first to pronounce caulk correctly. Bravo my man!
Thank you so much my friend! 👍🏽😊🙏🏽
Are you supposed to put grout i between the tile and tub then caulk over or just caulk in between it?
You will find it at Home Depot or Lowe's, "sanded siliconized caulk" it has the grout and texturing in it
Omg this is why it always looks weird... and then i have to redo it a year later 😅
Tape is for rookies
A half inch bro. Cmon now. That’s hack job.
First thing I thought eighth of an inch max
This is for first timers/diy lol nothing wrong with starting out with this.
👍👍
why is the line high up?
I heard you're aren't suppose to caulk over the weep holes
It should be either grouted or left alone this way any water that gets behind the tile will have somewhere to weep. Silicone will lock in any water trying to escape.
Water should never get behind the tile..silicone is a measure to prevent that from happening.
@@KizWhalifa. If water should never get behind the walls then why bother with cement boards and waterproofing the cement boards?? Grout is porous and water does penetrate.
@@allborosnyc4544just because water eventually does get through grout does not mean you want water going behind the tile. That is simply just wrong lol and they water proof behind the tile IN CASE water does find its way behind there.
Is this gene evo9??
What is there is a small gap where there used to appear to be grout but some has so old and washed away?
You remove all grout from that gap and fill it with caulk, grout isn’t necessary unless you use a clear silicone caulk and spread a thin layer above the grout
Uh, why the soapy water?
Makes it easier to spread and sticks less to your fingers and gloves giving a cleaner loom
Soapy water on water based , alcohol on silicone......
@@LordJazz so, it really isn't necessary. But, nice to do.
@@TheDriver21122001yeah this one actually says not to use soapy water in the instructions…for once I actually read them before coming to RUclips lol
the instructions on this particular sealant specifically say not to use soapy water my dude
Ese silicon no sirve !!! Le sale hongos rapido
How to WHAT?!
Bro what are you doing😢
guys do not follow this advice please lol
Why? Please explain
The tape sounds like a good idea, but it’s actually creating an excess of caulk at the top of the bead, which will be a breeding ground for mold. The soap and water mixture is a good idea but if you spray too much, it will get behind the bead and create bubbles in the silicone which will also create mold.
Don’t use tape, cut a smaller hole at the nozzle, either at 45° or whatever you prefer. dab your finger in water and smooth the bead.
@@FixThisHouse No caulk. Either leave it alone or grout the area. The water that gets behind the wall tile needs to escape. Grout is porous.
@@allborosnyc4544 Correct! The only caulk in a shower goes on the OUTSIDE of the glass door frame. All the water hitting the walls or door INSIDE needs somehow to get to the drain. Caulking just dams it up.
@@MarkTubeGnot correct lol water that gets behind a wall doesn’t drain properly, just causes damage down the road.
Are you supposed to put grout i between the tile and tub then caulk over or just caulk in between it?
No, you can but ideally you put the silicone right into the eight inch gap that should be between the tile and the tub
@@tu1469yeah the problem is that my tub has way bigger than an 1/8 inch gap… and the person did it with grout not caulk
@@Nahhhhhhson in this special case yeah grout is ideal to hold the caulking in place
