- After a fatal head-on collision between a 12-year-old boy on an e-bike and a 66-year-old bicyclist, Key Biscayne officials held an emergency meeting Friday to consider a ban on e-bikes and scooters in the island village.
so this is a public town meeting and the lady got booted out for expressing her opinion??
Wow, this was ridiculous
Not even an opinion. She stated a fact.
@@jasonm949even the news said it was a fact but these old folks don't want to place some blame there it should be. The resident should have worn a helmet no matter what
What happened to council standing up for free speech? The Mayor should have told the police to back off?
will they ban cars when someone crashes and dies?
ban cars
Take the right to ride your E Bike makes no sense. People are killed by all vehicles every day. Why no look into how the accident was caused. Maybe E Bike riders should have a divers license or maybe all bike riders should have helmets. Banning E bike all together just shows how ignorant the Mayer and the community of Biscayne are.
how about being16 years old with a learner permit
So if she was hit by a kid on a regular bicycle... Would they band bicycles?
They are freaks over there They probably would try to
Yes.
You seened hiw shock they were when facts are spoken.. They all went crazy when the lady said she died because she didn't have a helmet.. Sad but true
I mean she wasn’t wearing a helmet. Even when you ride a bike you need a helmet.
yes
No,.. you don’t. The law doesn’t require it. It was her choice. Do you even know if she died of head injuries?
@@Doc.Holiday Well Doc Holiday, if that is your real name, no they did a terrible job on reporting the accident, we have no idea how they collided, or what injuries anyone suffered, hell we don't even know what type of bike he was riding, except it was an E-something. We do know that she was a pillar of society, and I guess that means a lot when you die in a crash, unfortunately the youth is just a nobody, so the ban went into effect.
About one of your earlier points, pedestrians, and car drivers are far more likely to get serious head injuries, yet they are not forced to wear helmets.
Face it, the country hates bikes, in all of their forms. Hell, how many folks died in car accidents that day? No one bats an eye over that, that was just an unfortunate incident, but if bikes are involved everyone gets up in arms.
Have a great day, and keep up the good fight.
@@timsmythfilmsandanimations ,… yes old people fall down and hurt themselves. Maybe anyone over 80 should be required to wear a helmet when not in bed. Certainly in the shower. Showers are very hazardous. I’m 70 and ride an eBike all the time without a helmet. I think it’s okay that children are required to because they take too many chances. When I used to ride MTB I wore a helmet. I’d like to know the particulars. It sounds to me like the City may have some culpability? The crash site may have had a history? The fact there isn’t much information causes me to want to know more.
@@Doc.Holiday They didn't even show us a diagram of how the accident happened. Very concerning all around, and funny they care so much about a cyclist, it's just that they hate e-bikes more than they hate bicycles. Folks get killed in cars everyday and no one even raises an eyebrow.
She should have had a helmet, end of story.
The car dealerships and UBER is at work. They don't realized people die in a car accident too.
So because she’s a longtime resident, she gets immunity from having to wear a helmet, something that would have saved her life? It’s common sense. Why would anyone be offended at the fact that this was pointed out?!? What makes her any different from the rest of us?
That's exactly what it is! She should have worn a helmet!! We all know the risk of not wearing helmets but they think a ban will change anything!! She still had the responsibility to protect herself
There was / is no law requiring her to wear a helmet. It was her choice to wear or not wear one. I am 70 and do not wear a helmet when I ride either a bike or eBike.
@@Doc.Holiday well, if you decide to not wear a helmet while also knowing the safety risks behind not wearing one, that is YOUR decision. You’re free to do as you please but why should everyone have to work around a ban of a form of transportation because of YOUR decision that day? It’s like going skydiving while refusing to wear a parachute, dying, and now the family gets skydiving banned because of the death.
@@rev_kev.y2k I do not support the ban. That is a ridiculous knee jerk decision to blame an inanimate object that was recklessly operated by one, the other or both of these two individuals. The bikes did not cause this misfortune. Wearing or not wearing a helmet has nothing to do with anything. And,… yes I do accept responsibility for a head injury. By your measure old people over say 80 should put on a helmet before they get out of bed in the morning. Old people tend to fall down a lot.. I’m not wearing a helmet then or now. I hear a lot about “choice” these days. That’s my CHOICE and it doesn’t affect you so buzz off.
@@rev_kev.y2k and your sky diving analogy is just plain low intellect, nonsense.
Ban cars for 60 days per fatal incident as well.
That or realize that taking people's mobility is wrong.
May be if she had a helmet she would have survived. I’ll escort my self out this public debate. It’s sad when you can’t state facts without getting booed & kicked out a public meeting for giving your opinion. They only wanted to hear what they wanted to hear.
Banned from the meeting and escorted by police for mentioning old lady didn't have a helmet. Wow.
freedom of speech at their best in VKB,and cops protecting their pension
@@elelectrotech9374 Violation of 1st amendment right, and illegal detainment. I'd be suing.
trumptards cry freedom only if it fits their agenda...unreal
Yeah for telling the truth!!! Its disgusting behavior by these old folks!!!! You are supposed to wear a helmet and assume all risks when you don't, but they want to blame the bike and this child and don't even know what happened there
@elelectrotech9374 yeah they kicked her out for nicely telling the truth, they look like gestapo!! Her 1st amendment rights were violated and she needs to sue and tell that community to kiss her a$$
I agree ban all kids from riding anything. Ban all 60 year old women from riding bicycles. While you are at it ban swimming too. I hear that people have die swimming.
Sucks what happened but talk about dramatic AF
People have Ebikes for work.
Why was the lady escorted out of the meeting by police? Was she lying? Did she violate her right to free speech?
I’m surprised you’re surprised. The real world isn’t all sunshine and rainbows
@@JackIsNotInTheBox Where did I indicate that I was surprised? I asked some questions and I am still interested in the answers.
Why are ebike riders in this town letting them get away with this?
They're not there was a guy from Miami arrested the other day because he challenged the law He said I'm on crandon boulevard You can't enforce that policy on this road He refused ID six police officers had to arrest him this is the village attitudes
another win for big oil and the automotive industry
Road bikes are geared to go faster than 40 mph.
The fact these people forced a woman out for telling the truth is disgusting!!! So nobody else opinion or even fact means anything?? Then whats the point of having this meeting?? The gestapo cops took her 1st amendment right and sorry she passed but she should have been wearing a helmet like all the rest of us.
I do food delivery in Miami via ebikes and often deliver food in this area. Due to the fact driving around downtown and on the island is near impossible to deliver your foods. Now I guess I'm legally not allowed to do my job...
You deliver food via eBike to Key Biscayne from Miami? Agreed, the ban is wrong.
That's a hell of a long ride I've done it
@@sitdowndogbreath ,.. some cold food, coming from a Miami restaurant.
Im wearing a helmet, when im riding my ebike now. I almost crashed going 18mph hitting a pothole. I could of been hurt badly, and im over 65.
Normal people: Dang cars are dangerous. I guess we should make our streets safe before our children die from them
South Florida: F the kids and take anything that'd help them get around town and get in the way of me car.
Exactly, sounds like they are pushing the blame on ebikes when the only person to blame is the city. Its disgusting.
LOL guess the city decided it needed to lose more civil litigation in court, instead of doing the right thing and just classifying them as personal conveyances so they can have both protections under state statues, but what ever they will figure it out after the 3rd or fourth suit I guess
Truth be known, maybe the City has liability in this accident. Does the city mitigate reckless operation of bikes and e-bikes? How many tickets were issued over the last 30 days to reckless operators? Was there proper traffic signage and lighting at this intersection? What is the accident history at this intersection? Outlawing a class of transportation may be a smoke screen to lay blame other than where it belongs?
Doesn’t Florida have a Helmet law for Bicyclists?
It’s unfortunate & tragic,And it’s probably safest to ALWAYS wear a helmet if you are on a bike, regardless if it’s motorized or not!
W/ that being said, THE CITY IS ALLOWED TO BAN THOSE ELECTRIC BIKES!
Be safe out there everyone!
Amsterdam has the largest bike and eBike usage per capita of any city in the world and they have no helmet law. The same with Paris. Florida doesn’t either. Are you pro choice? How about this choice? The city is banning an inanimate object that was used reckless by one, or both of these individuals. Helmets had nothing to do with the cause and neither did the bikes. If the boy was at fault then his parents should be found financially liable in civil court. If the woman was at fault then her estate should have liability to damages to the boy and his property. The city needs to task LEOs with fining reckless riders, not ban methods of transportation.
Check your privilege out the door this is why we don't like you rich people
Children should not be on them.
They have levels and you can get some as slow or fast as regular pedal bikes, if it's a fast bike you blame the parents...the bike isn't the problem
@@Rick-fe8xncorrect I can pedal 22 mph or do 15mph on an ebike so it doesn't really come down to speed . She wasn't wearing head protection and she died but the 12 Yr old survived wearing a helmet. Just an unfortunate accident.
These cyclists think they own the road …unreal
No more than old people in their golf carts do. Those should be banned.
HE WAS TWELVE OH MY GOD STFU.
So, to be clear....roads were literally invented for bicycles and horses. Cars were not even invented yet. The man who invented them said the infrastructure WILL fail eventually when cars came out. So get your facts straight typical dumba55 american.
We have as much right to the road as a motorist? In that sense we do also own the roads as much as any motorist
I mean full ban is harsh, but the fact is that we shouldn't be letting kids use motorized devices. Its dumb
Yearly key biscayne visitor, this is probably for the best. The kids were flying on the sidewalks, the bikes are just too fast. We rented some from the ritz and they would hit 25mph in no time.
A separate bolored bike lane like the express lane would also help. Riding a bike in the street in Miami is a death wish
Tourists and old people cause more crashes in Florida than kids on e bikes do. Sounds like tourists and old people should be banned from operating vehicles here.
@@jasonm949 there’s just no concern for the general public in Miami. Most of the people learned to drive in countries with no traffic laws. Constant hit and runs, more uninsured unlicensed drivers than any other part of Florida.
For a bunch of people living in paradise they sure seem in a rush, slow down and enjoy yourselves lol
@@OhioPalmTrees👍👍🙏🙏💙
It wasn't on the sidewalk this happened in the road and nobody was there to tell the story except for this child. She unfortunately passed but you have to wear a helmet, what if it were a car, skateboard, roller blades anything?? This is uncalled for and extreme

Like the reporter said. Key Biscayne is a tight community, but a lot of wealthy people live here, so is no surprise to pass a law overnight after the unfortunate death of this wonderful lady. Thanks to the pressure of the influential residents of this community they could pass this into law. The other question is, what will be the consequences of the the brat that killed this lady?
I do food delivery in Miami via ebikes and often deliver food in this area. Due to the fact driving around downtown and on the island is near impossible to deliver your foods. Now I guess I'm legally not allowed to do my job...
You know very well how some people ride this bikes, not you but because of this , this may become law all over Florida.@@Kingofthethrillz
@@hondaopportunity8107 I 100% agree that people drive these things and dirt bikes and BMWs inappropriately in the city and one of the main reasons so many of these e-bikes are on the sidewalk are because they don't feel safe on the streets so it's a no-win situation on anyone's side . Yeah we take it personally when you rich p ricks always get your way or so it seems check your privilege out the door Your friend should have been wearing the helmet bicycles go a lot faster than kick scooters and I've been saved by a helmet a bunch of times on a regular bicycle by the way.
Why ban ebike? Why not ban helmet 🪖?
Unfortunately, they cannot ban ebikes for disabled people. Electric bikes can be considered an "other power-driven mobility device" under ADA law, and the ADA itself explicitly states disabled individuals can choose , within reason, whatever mobility device they want. The state or county government is prohibited from preventing disabled people from using ebikes as a mobility device.
" (a) Denial of participation. A public accommodation shall not subject an individual or class of individuals on the basis of a disability or disabilities of such individual or class, directly, or through contractual, licensing, or other arrangements, to a denial of the opportunity of the individual or class to participate in or benefit from the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations of a place of public accommodation."
