  • Here are the most recent observations of the Thuja Pack this winter (the pack from yesterday’s post). The pack was 11 wolves in October but has shrunk to what appears to be 6 wolves now.
We have observations of 6 wolves together on Dec 18, Jan 8, and Feb 4 with another observation of 5 wolves on Jan 25. The pack appears to be Wolf O3S (an almost 2 year old collared male originally from the Windsong Pack), an adult female, and 4 pups.
We are not surprised the pack decreased in size from the fall as this is pretty typical, though we are surprised how quickly the pack went from 11 to 6 (basically 1.5 months).
How that happened is unknown but could have been a number of things including: a juvenile wolf(ves) could have dispersed, pups and/or other adults could have died, the pack could have split into two social groups, one of which left the area, etc.
What we do know is that there were 2 adults in Thuja this fall that are no longer in the pack this winter it seems. Additionally, the pack had 7 pups in fall but only 4 are in the pack now. Very unlikely the 3 “missing" pups dispersed so they either died or are part of a different social group outside of our study area.

Sad the Pack is so much smaller now. Seems like a dramatic drop in numbers. Is that a common thing? It’s a beautiful Pack, none-the-less. Prayers they all thrive for many years to come.

Yep! Packs come and go a lot as they go through generations with some of them even being taken out completely by a competing pack. Their lives are insaaane

👍 Very nice view of them on the move, but not in a hurry.
The other trail cam location provided views of a bigger variety of wildlife..
Is this going to be the new permanent location for the trail cam?

Any idea what happened to the other five? Is the "mildness" of this winter helpful for wolves up north? Most of what I know about wolves comes from the yellowstone packs, so I have a lot to learn about forest wolves.
