  • Full HQ version of the Wonderful World of Color episode 'Disneyland After Dark'. No watermark, correct aspect ratio, and no ads. From the Walt Disney Treasures: Disneyland DVD set. Content starts at 1:00
"Disneyland After Dark" was an episode of Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color that aired on April 15, 1962. Later, it was released theatrically overseas as a short subject.
As the name of the episode implies, Walt Disney himself presents a view of Disneyland at night. It features some nighttime entertainment, including a fireworks display (complete with Tinker Bell flying across the sky) and Tahitian dancers performing for Adventureland dinner patrons. However, this episode focuses less on Disneyland itself and more on the many celebrity singers at the different sections of the park, including the Osmond Brothers, former Mouseketeers Annette Funicello and Bobby Burgess, teen heartthrob Bobby Rydell, Monette Moore, and Louis Armstrong. In a running gag, Walt Disney introduces but is unable to attend these attractions and performances, being pinned down by an endless supply of autograph seekers (including a repeat customer) throughout the program.

One of my favorites! The 1964-5 World's Fair is another. People and Places (I think 1958) in color also has wonderful park highlights. Walt enjoying popcorn + interacting with guests (totally a priceless visit) And, what about those cars in the parking lot! Back when chrome was king, including the Disneyland Alweg & Santa Fe MonoRail. LOL

We taped this off the Disney Channel in the 80s. I must have watched it a dozen times. Night time is still my favorite time in the park, especially in the late evening and you can get 3 or 4 quick rides on an attraction like Splash Mountain.

I was little in the early '70s and I remember the Carnation stage. The later Mickey Mouse Club (after Annette, before Britney) used to shoot parts of their show performing there. I also miss riding the monorail around the giant parking lot. It was always a game to look for your car! Lifetime or one of the cable channels made a movie about the Osmonds' careers called "Side By Side" because the older boys (as shown here) got their break singing that song for Walt Disney, becoming regular performers at the park. :) Thanks for showing this wonderful piece of history, Matt!

I loved the part with Walt Disney eating popcorn and getting a autograph for a fan was cute. Walt was a true entrepreneur in the entertainment world and I really miss him so much,he really changed the world with his innovations and he loved Disneyland as much as we do now. 😂😢

The entertainers of today are not fit to wipe the asses of the people you see in this video. This is real entertainment! Real talent! Annette funicello was a real lady. She was very classy and respectable. It broke my heart that she suffered in the end from multiple sclerosis 😭. Annette funicello did not deserve that

We had Disney in the 80s with our illegal satellite dish. I loved when they would put on Disney After Dark and play all of the classic cartoons and films and the original and new Mickey Mouse Club. Disney programming in the 80s was great. Dumbo’s Big Top and Pooh’s Corner!

Just to let everyone know including you Matterhorn Matt, I believe that at the time during the 1960's whenever people go to Disneyland during the night. Is something like people will watch from this old school TV special.
Now I'm not a historian for Disneyland, but I am a Disneyland historian within my heart and for everyone else that I try to tell them of what used to be at Disneyland. Anyway at the time during the 1960's at Disneyland, several people have told Walt Disney that there should be grad nights at Disneyland and night time events. So thus with Grant Knights, well known celebrities at the time singing and performing at Disneyland and along with Disneyland fantasy in the sky fireworks show that happens during the summer at the time only and maybe until the 1970s, when the fireworks where change to weekend schedules at that time. Anyway fantasy in the sky fireworks show, that will perform in the summer seasons only at Disneyland during the 1960's at that time. That was the beginning and the original Disneyland after Dark.
I've seen this documentary on RUclips, that premiered on the Disney Channel back in the 1980s. It's called backstage Disney the Main Street Electrical Parade, the parades original Creator Bob Yanni, had said that before the Main Street Electrical Parade made its existence at Disneyland. He said before that there was not that many nighttime businesses at Disneyland. So that means that Disneyland after Dark from the beginning or from the start, was nothing but Grant Knights, celebrities singing and performing at Disneyland during the night and the fantasy in the and the fantasy in the sky fireworks show that they do during the summer only at the time. We're the only nighttime businesses and the best they can do for Disneyland after Dark at that time.
So until 1972 when the Main Street Electrical Parade made its debut at Disneyland, everything changed for Disneyland after dark during the 1970s. I also believe they had some budget cuts of a few grat nights and celebrities singing and performing at Disneyland at that time. So in the 1970s when the Main Street Electrical Parade came along at Disneyland, they had the parade itself to be a summer seasonal performance. And they had Disneyland's fantasy in the sky fireworks to perform during the weekends, as a new change of dates and schedules for the fireworks performance. So thanks for the Main Street Electrical Parade, Disneyland entertainment had caught on. With their own nighttime productions and performances in Disney style, for Disneyland entertainment and still to this day.
But the original Disneyland after Dark, really began with grad nights, celebrities singing and performing and the summer seasonal performance of fantasy in the sky fireworks back in the 1960s. And that was the original form and struggles for Disneyland after dark entertainment and for regular Disneyland entertainment and performances.

I've seen this program numerous-times & always enjoy. Although I've seen in its entirety, I now only watch it for the intro & end-credits. That "Carousel of Color" tune does something to me I can't explain. There's something so inherently-magical or special-sounding about it. This particular-entry of the program doesn't include the original-intro to the weekly-show but it's included on other YT-selections of "Dis. After Dark". Unfortunately, these aren't the original-intros either but rather the one created for the show in the 70's, with the semi-psychedelic-effects. Still-good, though, with a magical-touch but not the one from '62 that went-with "Dark". A treat to see WD himself in these weekly-programs, wherein he acted as host, often as much an anticipated-highlight as the entries-themselves. I can only marvel now at the realization that this one-man created more happiness for the human-race than almost-anyone who's ever-lived. Of course, this includes all the artists & creative-people his studio fostered & supervised, under WD's guiding-principles & approved-auspices. It's fun to hear W referring to his bedtime at the end of this program, how morning comes-early, and which is one of his favorite-times at the park, too! I can only imagine that millions of apprehensive schoolchildren & wage-earning adults trapped in boring, mundane jobs across the country, could-only sigh with envy at the pioneering-filmmaker's fabulous-life, come-Monday-morning! I'm sure many a harried, pressured, stressed-out businessman, too, could only dream of running an organization such as WD's, an enterprise engaged strictly in providing laughter & happiness for the human-race!
