The Duke ball is beautiful, and the coolest ball to have. It has more pronounced dimples in the leather, it is a little bit bigger around, but lighter than the GST so it carries quite easily. However, the Duke is pretty hard to grip even when broken in, so I mostly use the GST for throwing. The GST tacky stripes and laces give better control. The Duke would work great if you have giant hands like an NFL QB, but the GST is foolproof.
Reminds me of Jared Lorenzen. I'm pretty close to your age. Yeah, I also have a little belly and enjoy throwing real made in U.S.A pigskin footballs. I own 4 NFL dukes and 2 NCAA gst. All sits in a collapsible mesh laundry basket I take to the grassy parks. The other items along with it are a 10 x 10 FT golf net with a target I setup, a belt, a wet towel so I do not need to lick my fingers. I throw it on a dime at the bullseye on the golf net up to 40 yards and can lob it 50 something for hail Mary's. I like how you are honest with your range as many people would inflate that and never actually go out to an actual football field to measure their range. I do not know if this range limitation thing is a fat thing or I just don't have that quick snap in the throwing motion from having a torn rotator cuff and broken wrist when I was 18 about 20 years ago. Would love to be able to throw it 60 70 80 yards. Cheers Al 🍺
Just got me a duke. Wasn’t a football fan but Lamar has caught my attention. Wanted to have a genuine football. After receiving it I thought I was ripped off. The ones on TV were much cooler looking than mine out the box.. got a leather horse hair brush in the mail coming, and some Bick leather conditioner. Not looking to make it sticky, just nice. Any tips would be appreciated!
What’s up Al and RUclips community. So I bought a GST 1003 (regular one). I followed all the steps, rub down with hot damp towel, scrub brush, conditioner, light tack bar. Had about 10 throwing sessions and 4 games (1 in the rain and mud, 1 grass, 2 turf). The ball is still a PILL when it’s chilly. The leather doesn’t feel like it’s loosened at all and the ball feels like a brick even with a little air out. Any tips guys? Or is this just gonna be a year long process to get it broken in to the point that I can get a decent grip in cold weather? I have 9.75” hands so not small by any means but not mitts either.
Gabriel Hernandez brother pls set ur oven to 350 and put the ball in for 4 min it’s gonna come out gray u gotta put shaving cream and rub all around until it got soaked in the ball after that put the wax and brush HARD
hello sir, what is your routine for prepping your game ball in between games? Do you go with full tack bar and and spray? Or just give it a good wipe down and call it good?
Hey Al! I acquired the Wilson prep kit already. Footballs are looking great and have recovered major amount of grip. Any advice for rainy days, say like extra tips on conditioning matters or tricks to get a better grip with wet conditions? Thanks man! Keep it up!
@@johntylervaughn9857 The wax also stops water from getting in between the leather and bladder and ruining the ball. Best thing on non-game rainy days is to leave the leather inside and use your synthetic Wilson GST.
Hey Al, good info here. What do you think of coating the ball in mud and drying as a final step? The chargers do it. I'm thinking of digging up some clay and doing it
Just the start of it, when you buy a fresh new ball or a fresh new ball mailed to you. After you wash it with a warm towel, just keep using the brush and tack bar to give it tha tack grip.
I’m a professional at the breaking in balls thing and I learned what you have to do is use a warm damp rag first then you wanna brush it each panel for about 5 min and then u wanna get shaving cream as a conditioner and apply it to the ball. After brushing it on the most important part is to put it in the oven for about 5 min after it’s out it should be a light gray color . You repeat the whole process again of brushing with the shaving cream ( 5 min each panel). Trust me after that final brush of shaving cream and after you apply the wax it will feel like a ball that you had for years
Its really hard to pass a football in the rain, your hands are wet, and the football too then its even harder to make a good spiral. Some QBs are good in bad weather so it's just natural to them.
@@UNKNOWN-le2tu not really, it becomes more grippy when it's dried down with a towel in the rain. Also, the equipment team may have not broken down the ball or didn't apply too much tack on the football.
The duke ball has the best spiral

Looks like Kevin James; sounds like Bill Belichick.
Awesome video man. So glad I watched this before running my new football down with athletic tape like I used to haha.

I didn't want to go to the store, realized I was already in NJ where the mud comes from, went to park, caked it up.

Hey Al. Have you used the leather TDS football? If so, how does it compare to the GST? Thanks

Try and get all the wax off if rain is coming it makes the ball slippery when wet

. Hear, hear! Plus you can throw a synthetic ball ANYwhere...asphalt, gravel, beach, while in the water...and it won't get ruined.
For a flag football league and everyday play do you recommend the gst or duke? Also is leather worth it over composite? Thanks and go Jets!
If im not gonna use my duke ball for a while should i deflate it??????
brooo pls keep posting
Should i do this on a 1780 wilson football ?
can you do a vid where u r breaking into the duke
What size did you get in the white football? Pro or youth?
I’m looking for a ncaa size football
What happens after you break into it how do you put the ball back together
Can you use this procedure on a composite leather footballs?
It's not necessary. They way they come is as good as they get.
Not on composite, it's just a rubber-ish football.

If I have already scrubbed the brush on the bar... should I clean the brush with water to get the tack off it or just use as is?
no just leave it
Just Al should I use the same process for the GST 1003
Can you run it down too hard with the warm rag? I just rubbed mine down and it looks like I pressed too hard with the rag on some spots?
Freels is the man
picked up a new gst today
Don't touch the Duke!! Keep that boy in the trophy case!! Looks flawless...
Can I have the duke gst prime and gst football
Does anybody else think he looks like Hank from Breaking Bad
Do you have to wet the football every time you condition it or is that just for the start of it ?
Just the start of it, when you buy a fresh new ball or a fresh new ball mailed to you. After you wash it with a warm towel, just keep using the brush and tack bar to give it tha tack grip.
Unless you want the ball super dark brown, then yes you would wet the football every time.
That white one we used in arena
Hello would you be willing to make a trade for any of your footballs for a Nike vapor elite ball (Vanderbilt)
I did each side for 5 mins twice but its still slick? Just keep brushing it?
he said he did that for 2 days
Should watch the video the chargers just put up not too long ago how they break in balls in the NFL.
Will this ruin my ball?
what happens if you don’t brush
Probabky wont be grippy or dark color
Where can I buy any of these three
Hibbit, academy, dicks

Trust me man at 350 bake for 4 min
Don't put footballs in the over man. You can ruin the bladder. Aside from hot air expansion, you'll fry your pigskin.
Yo bro what does that Jets man cave sign say? I got a Jets "Duke" ball and thanks for the video. J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!!!
I wiped some of the pebble off my new gst on accident
Kari Svejkovsky I did that too I used a brush and they somehow came back
