I haven't really heard many folks talk about Piranesi, but it sounds like the perfect fall/winter read. Adding it to my ever-growing TBR. Great video!
I'm currently reading Piranesi for a fourth time and I love it just as much as I did the first :') I'm definitely putting Palimpsest on my tbr!!

I'm so happy to hear your discussion of Piranesi - I haven't seen many other people reading it! I love how well it went with Palimpsest, I've been meaning to read that for years.
Piranesi was heartbreaking and tragic in so many ways, and I found the bittersweet ending so interesting. It makes me think that once we are able to emerge from our covid confinement, we will similarly feel a twinge of what used to be. Will we miss our solitude? Probably a little. Will our loneliness have been "worth it"? Definitely not, thanks to the other people who have power over us.

Always appreciate your thoughtful reviews! I also just finished reading Piranesi and it really blew me away. It was not the book I thought I wanted, but was definitely the book I needed at this moment. You may have already seen it, but the New Yorker had a very interesting profile of Clarke recently, documenting her struggle with chronic illness, which really helped me connect with the book on a deeper level.

I'm reading Piranesi at the moment and really liking it (once you overcome the initial confusion...)! Are there any other stories that you'd recommend with a similar vibe to this other than possibly Palimpsest?
I loved JSaMN so I was super excited for Piranesi, then I heard the premise and was like "eh maybe not", then I started hearing great reviews from several people I really trust (yourself included) so now I'm excited again, lol.
I don't think Palimpsest would be for me but it's such an interesting concept!
Also yes I love when books use a fantasy world to explore/illuminate our world!! I feel like Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko definitely did that in that it used the themes and conflicts of the book to point to similar things in our world (which fantasy often does and which I really appreciate.)
And the three connected books by Grace Lin (Starry River of the Sky, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, When the Sky Turned to Silver) are really really lovely middle grades (with gorgeous illustrations!) that are loosely based on Chinese folktales and I think they fit in really well with what you were saying in this video - they made me think a lot about stories and what they mean and what they do because in the books there's literal power from stories but also figurative power? idk, it reminds me of what you were saying about the art themes in Piranesi.

Piranesi is brilliant - in won a women's prize for fiction in the UK and I first encountered it in a radio series book reading and then bought and read it over a 24 hour period. As you say, the reveal was made much more clear to the reader than the protagonist which was naturally fun. Interestingly it had some very classic tropes, such as the evil, selfish male magician - in fact it reminded me of characters in CS Lewis' interplanetary series, especially Out of the Silent Planet and That Hideous Strength.
Palimpsest sounds interesting but disturbing in its premise.

Have you ever read Summer In Orcus by T. Kingfisher? I think you would like it a lot! She has written a lot of other fairy tales retelling. Her writing reminded me of The girl who circumnavigated fairyland in a ship of her own making, in that it's so absurd and wonderful.
Jumping on this comment to second the T. Kingfisher recommendation!! I love the work I've read from her and think she has a great balance of lovely fairytale descriptions/settings, clever dialogue, really practical heroines, and whimsical/magical stories with an edge (or sometimes more) of darkness. Haven't read Summer in Orcus yet but I'm excited to! 😄
