Here on my channel, I am renovating a 250 year old stone cottage on my property in Normandy, France. By using traditional, low-waste and off-grid methods, I'm aiming to keep the charm and character of this old building, and turn it into a furnished, finished home for family whilst keeping environmental impact as low as possible. There will also be content on living in France, visiting beautiful rural places, hunting for antiques, gardening and more! Hit subscribe if you would like to keep up with my journey, and hit the notification bell to be alerted when we go LIVE where we have a first viewing of the video as it is published with a live chat so I can answer all your questions! See you in Sean's World.
I love the fact you recycle everything. It’s just great you have the space
Sean do NOT apologize it is your place keep what you wish how you wish
You are a CLEVER THING! I love watching you renovate this cottages and I love your sheds full of gorgeous things, projects and building materials. I totally get it.
Thanks 👌
I'm so glad you are saving the charm of your cottages.
It's all coming together nicely - amazing with how far you have actually come with your Cottage ❤
was just thinkin that, too.... 🙃
From a family of engineers, we call your precise fitting of purlings and noggins "configuration management" and, Hercules, you do it perfectly
to a "T."...Superb!!! Another great video, thank you. I, too, love using things I already have for future projects...And your new stairs idea is smart. As the French say, "You have reason."/"Vous avez raison."(It makes sense)...
Never knew what a noggin really was. Except for the old folks saying, "Watch your noggin, don't hit your noggin, use your noggin..." the head rests between the shoulders like a noggin does, between beams.
Makes sense...😉
What a thoughtful plan for the 1st floor of the cottage! am pleased that you are keeping the character of the building and working with what is there. it's going to be wonderful!
The outside of the property is looking so smart. You’ve made so much progress with the interior of the cottage. You must be glad you have these skills.
It’s a pleasure watching your visions come to fruition 🔨
Great job Sean! Love how you save useful bits and bobs, you have a great stock to call on saving you time and money sourcing materials. It would be criminal to build new when you have such a pretty property, it just needs a bit of tlc and it will be a glorious cottage full of charm and soul, something you just can't build from scratch. Well done you! xx
You just keep on looking and saving those items that keep you dreaming up those great ideas. No apologies. 😊
If you decided the stairs were too steep you could clean them up and use them as a ladder shelf for plants and ornaments. That way you are keeping original features but repurposing them
For copper pots and bowls?! 🍯🤗
Sean, it's so nice that you talk to us about your plans, in detail, just as though we're there with you & involved every bit as much as you are!! Unfortunately, you are doing all the work, but thank you for including us!! I learned how to cover an exposed stone on the wall by watching you!! I was kind of amazed, but then, I'm not a builder!! LoL. 🇺🇸
My pleasure!
I love you teaching me how to do all the things you already know how to do. Makes me get off my lazy behind and find projects of my own. Presently finishng a bathroom in my daughters walkout basement and next putting in a full kitchen. There is nothing as satisfying as the instant gratification of walking into a finished reno you achieved.
You can do it!
Right?! Inspired! Only, now I have Less time for my YouTubing!😱
(except for my jams!🎶)
Best laid plans of mice and men are weather dependent. A good pivot Sean, great to see the studs going up! 🙏❤️
It’s looking amazing 🥰
Thank you for saving an old building. It’s gonna be fabulous!
Looking much more like a livable space. Cozy and dry with good natural light.
I like the downstairs fireplace just like it is. With rendering AND a few stones showing.. .. as an American, I find it so "Euro".🗼
What a difference the framing up makes! It gives a clearer picture in my imagination as to how it's all coming together! Just by installing the stud work, it's opened up my imagination!
What a difference just 6 months have made! Looks great.❤
I volunteer to stay in the cottage once finished!
You’re doing a great job Sean, its all coming along very nicely 👍
The stairs are pretty tricky, since you want them to come up in a different spot than they do now, and there are so many potential ways to do that I'm struggling to envision which one you might choose... but I do think the upstairs will be really lovely once it's all put together, regardless. It'll be a great guest cottage, and with all the windows you're putting in upstairs, it'd also make a great studio space for painting or fiber arts.
One thing I might consider about those stairs is the possibility of connecting the barn and the cottage on the upstairs level at some later date. If that cottage stairwell will serve both spaces, then it makes sense to give it a comfortable amount of the space on the ground floor, and have it open to a landing upstairs where it would be easy to put a doorway between the two spaces right next to it, to avoid sacrificing too much space to a hallway.
I like your story, and you stick to it!! It's your project and you have the vision! I have a real hard time watching good wood trashed. Your doing a great job!!
I'm amazed by your vision for the renovation. I'm one of the people that struggles to picture the steps that go into this type of transformation.
Sean, thank you for explaining everything you do, I have gained a lot knowledge and I greatly appreciate that, Thank you.
My pleasure!
Wood paneling in a Normandy cottage is very appropriate. I'm thinking of some lovely antique paneling I have seen in my furniture books especially on those enclosed beds, and old armoires.
Just like a jigsaw, it's coming together. Looking good.
With those studs on the wall it is beginning to look like a proper room, not just a hay loft! 👍
It's going to be fabulous when completely finished.
I watched This Old House, when they showed a quick fix for trying to save old farm board flooring but, it has spaces in between the boards. The host acquired the proper thicknes of rope, needed. (cotton? Idk.. ) Then they filled the spaces. When applying stain to the floor, the rope had stained, as well. It sounds nuts but, it looked nice enough. Quaint and "Country".
Glad to see your idea of using the old timbers on the walls; I like rustic!
Hello Sean and family! I don’t think your stairs look any steeper than our library ladder, except we do have handrails to hold onto. Hoping you find the boards you need for the wall. Good luck!
Sean, you are cracking on great. The plans sound awesome.
Rip it down and start over....no way! I am so glad you are saving this old building.
Absolutely! I wish we had ancient old structures in the U.S.. Even to save a ruin of a 200yo US building brings headaches of bs, red tape, permit$, zoning, Codes, co$ts.. and Most of our old structures are wooden, which is why there are so few, left. We have the ancient tower from the Vikings, who crossed over and Native American abodes built into rock faces ... why? Nobody knows... but, cultural buildings?? Our government couldn't care less about empty, run down buildings... until AFTER someone Else actually DOES a restoration ....🙄
The paneling will look lovely in the cottage 🎉
Good progress on the walls. You mentioned ‘The Crooked House” maybe you mean the one in Peter Pan’s Playground in Southend-on-Sea, Essex. The little train on the pier, cockles, whelks and candy floss! Happy days! 🤗
Oh yes many a happy day spent there when we were kids 😊
Not my style either! We don't throw out much...we use it somewhere=) Looks great Sean👍
I always learn something new from Sean. This is giving me the confidence to do some of my own renovations, with practice of course.
I like they way you think about keeping things you may need later. I feel the same way. Keep over head cost down and reuse things. Great work and video!
I love having a store of items that I might need one day. Hate throwing usable items away.
You never cease to amaze me with skills and problem solving. 🤔👍😼
I rather like the idea of having that wall on either side of the chimney in wood... I also like the stair idea... sounds lovely
You are just doing an amazing job
Your getting there!
Have a great weekend!
You too!!
Sams a braver woman than me, regarding those steps lol. I admire the treasure trove of materials, it’s like an Aladdins cave 👍😊
Hi Sean, thank you for sharing your ideas. You are making progress. Cheers Trish NZ
The cottage is definitely gaining by your expert care. So interesting to watch.
Cheers
Hello from Missouri in the USA!
You are a 'I may need it one day' type of guy... just like my Dad :)
My husband always had just incase wood
Steve you are doing a great job love Christine and Max
Steve ? 😃
@@Seans_World oh dear I am sorry this old lady has lost the plot !!
It certainly is coming together. And ripping it all down and building from scratch might be easier but where is the charm and history? I’m very happy you are taking the time to preserve and respect what people built hundreds of years ago. xx
I agree w/ the meter movement; however, would also suggest rebuilding the stairs & closing in the back of them. You can use that "closed-in" space as an open alcove or a tucked-in narrow storage space.
You have had to endure the wettest weather ever… nice job!
Definitely
Love the paneling idea.
Great video 🤗👍 even though we had a change of direction that makes it more interesting can can't rely on the weather 😂😂
Love Sue ❤❤❤🇬🇧❤❤❤
hello everyone ❤️ 🇨🇦
Great job!
I would turn that stairway around and have the walk up face the front entrance. This would require an new opening in the floor, but i believe it would be better for traffic flow.
Brilliant work, brilliant video!
Tearing it down would be quick and easy, but that would be like 3 episodes and then it would be done. LOL But, we don't want that. We want to see you restore that old place like new. Thanks for sharing, Sean! 👍👍
Nice work mate
I love what you’re thinking with the panelling. Also the way you want to position the staircase makes sense to me. It’s going to be lovely. ❤
Excellent job on the framing .
I think it is fine to keep your hoard of supplies until you are pretty much completed your renovations and construction, then you will be able to make an informed decision of what you still need and what can be discarded, the only problem is that it is a long process and that is what people get frustrated with, just ask my husband and me, and thankfully he has completed his renovations!
Rustic paneling on that back wall will look great! What about leaving the top of the stairs in the same place and lifting the bottom of the stairs to make it less steep onto the platform to then go down in the direction of the fireplace? At the top, maybe curve the stairs out the top and curving down towards the stone landing by the kitchen? So at the very top, the steps would be shaped like tower stairs. I hope this makes sense, and it would all have to be built. The steep stairs can be used elsewhere on the property, and your future knees will thank you!
Beautiful progress! Great plans!🥰👍😎
Have you considered reversing the door so it swings to the left instead of right. It would give you more clearance when you design the stairs
There is the Crooked House pub (South Staffordshire) victim to a fire albeit deliberate I heard. Your cottage looks better than that I think I have no idea why council is forcing a rebuild it won't be the same either. Maybe lower halve walls some storage shelves either side for books and other selected antique decor items. I wouldn't get rid of anything until your cottage is done and then reassess. Having a turning stair wouldn't cause issue with the door or cut into entrance or kitchen or sitting room. I wonder if you can find a ready made one at reclamation yard a squarish type if you decide not to have the current one as you could use it for the upper half of your pub. I would never rip any part of your home and start again wouldn't have the charm that an appreciator like you and Sam and family would have. It's not derelict it just needs a little updating and care and you are an experienced builder so why not.
Looking good Sean.
Great progress yes Sean it really is coming together.
I love your vision for the cottage it's coming along great 😊
Thank you! 😊
Nice work and your plans for the future is exciting.
I understand your repurposing. Everyone needs needs to do it more often and help Mother Earth💕
Thanks for the warning about the stairs! I would have gone down face first.. also, great work!
No worries!
Love every bit of your project ❤
Sean you are doing such a fine job on the cottage! ❤❤❤❤ I just love watching the process😊
You are an amazing craftsman, Sean! Your videos are very enjoyable and educational….love them! Greetings from PA USA! 👋
The label on the wine bottle level was crooked, that's why the building is a little wonky. Sean I have found if I get rid of something 2 weeks later I need it and it isn't available any longer. After you nail the last nail and screw the last screw then you can consider relocating the stuff that is left.
I also stash bits and pieces away for the same reason and with the same result. 😂
😃 😀
Hello All! Love the safety sandals! Sean!! I know you are working in comfort but your health and safety are important to us all! Please take precautions! Said with love and respect!❤
Yes agree, unfortunately l hurt my ankle and they are the only footwear l can wear at present
Californian work boots!
From your minds-eye to ours! It will all become more clear (and interesting to watch ) as time progresses. Super video!
Thanks 👌
Sean: Since you may redo the staircase anyway, you might want to consider having it go up and over part of the kitchen area. And please plan for the future. It may not be too steep for you both now, but it may pose a challenge five or ten years from now! And design it to be less steep!
Would be a lovely Airbnb?
I think it’s rustic enough and doesn’t need paneling added that is going to make it darker.
Looks great! I’ve been watching a while and know to trust your process, everything always comes together!
Sean....you just gave me a new name for my really friendly squirrels.....yours.
😃
Sean, I think I spotted an Orb (a spirit) checking the work out and your progress on the wall. It travelled across the lower center of the screen from left to right @ about 10:38. The orb didn't seem to object to your efforts either. I guess you have passed building inspection.
Sean your doing great hello😊
Hey there!
The stairs might be okay with a hand rail now for you both, long term no. Relax the stair and/or add a return to plan for the future.
Wood will look stunning
Creative people don't need to be organized Sean....it is all a work in progress in their world and like you said, you know just where you will eventually put it. There is nothing wrong with have 2 types of people in the world, the highly organized and the creative.....seldom the 'twain shall meet'' hahaha at least that is my life motto and I'm stickin to it as well (yes, I am a creative type)
😄 🤣
Thank you, Sean, best to Sam and the kitties
Sure is looming good . All the hard work is paying of 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Much appreciated 🙏
I'm getting very excited Sean, you can definitely see progress and I can't wait to see the finish. However unlike our friendly vloggers with the large chateau's , (which are great and impressive) your ancient cottage presents different and quite unique challenges because of it's irregularities such as the walls and little nooks and crannies. That's cottages for you but it's also part of their charm too, also by recycling you are using your collected resources that are at hand ,old and appropriate for the age of the cottage so you are not only helping your budget but also the planet, Well done matey and don't apologise for your "stuff" its your resource bank !
Thank you 😊 it's so nice to hear that you appreciate the complexity of the restoration
I really like your idea of old rustic paneling. 19:08 match for a 400 year old cottage. Oh, how I like the idea of a granite step toward the wall and then turn to the right with the steps. Those are top-notch ideas. With the paneling upstairs, you might go ahead and put that other window in which you were considering. You were so clever in your studding to accommodate the stone sticking out from the hearth breast. Clever, clever ! Knowing me, I would have given the stone a hard whack with the hammer. You are bursting with happiness. Take care. Hello from Yakima, Washington, USA.
Thanks
Suggestion - Open concept downstairs by the stairs seems like a good plan versus trying to put a wall in front of the stairs. The stairs could also be called a sladder. Stairs/ladder. The RUclips channel The Indie Project installed a sladder to get to their second floor in their off grid Portugal stone barn conversion to a house. You have such a large space upstairs and unless there’s other ways to get larger pieces of furniture and stuff upstairs I think trying to get something in between the kitchen wall, and the sladder could be quite difficult to get upstairs. It is such a cozy, small space downstairs that keeping the kitchen counters only against the wall seem like a nice and less impeding idea. Adding a small dining table and a few chairs will add separation and take up a bit of space where wall or return is not really necessary. And you could also use a cabinet as a wall or return instead of building, something solid that you can’t just easily move out of the way to get something upstairs. Just my thoughts. Keep up the great work!
Oh Sean, you have such great skills, I love watching you get around every challenge.
As for your collection, I’m the same, you just never know when you might need that certain thing/piece etc. It drove my late husband barmy 🤣🤣😊
Looking good Sean. Don't forget a bit writing on the walls like the date and your name e.tc..or perhaps some sort of time capsule.
Yes plan to do that downstairs
I took down a wall and found a coin with the date it was built put in there. It was a silver quarter dollar, so not dropped by mistake! We added our own coin and put that one back, for luck
